The YoungStars tournament has concluded, and it's time for some preseason hockey. Let's get at it.

NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: I will be studying this game closely for early indications of a pre-season champ. [shutting out the Sharks](https://oilersnation.com/2022/02/14/game-recap-46-0-edmonton-oilers-at-san-jose-sharks/) back on Valentine’s Day. My own impatience aside, the pre-season is meant for evaluating young players, working on systems, and for the vets to knock the rust off, and the biggest thing I’ll be watching for this afternoon is which (if any) of our prospects stand out in a positive way. Aside from that, I’m just happy that hockey is back and I plan on enjoying this afternoon’s game for what it is, the start of a new season that’s filled with hope and sky-high expectations. As much as I know that I will absolutely get bored of watching pre-season games before the end of this week, I have to admit how excited I am that the Edmonton Oilers (kinda) will be facing off against the Winnipeg Jets (sorta) in only a few short hours. All we have to do is get through these next eight (8!!) pre-season games and the starting line will be right there.

Next up, the Oilers will head to Seattle to take on the Kraken for their first meeting of the season. - The more I zeroed in on Xavier Bourgault, the more I noticed the sneaky little plays he was making with the puck whenever it landed on his stick. So the dates that you need to block off for this trip are January 12th to 15th. While I have no idea if he’ll stick beyond the opener or for how long, the guy has got all of the tools to make the leap to the NHL level and the fun part will be watching to see if he can put everything together. I bet he gets games with the Oilers by next season. Rittich finished the game with 22 saves and a .846 save%. Yeah, we got to watch the Young Stars Tournament last weekend and that was fun to a point, but it’s just not the same as having a smattering of NHL regulars taking a twirl for the first time. To his credit, Dave Rittich was pretty good for the Jets through 40 minutes and he actually made a bunch of saves that kept the game tighter than it probably should have been. Now that we’ve made it through this first game without anyone really looking out of place, I’ll be eager to see how quickly Woodcroft trims down the roster and what his approach will be like once the axe comes out. The wheels really fell off in the third period, though, as the home side tagged him with a quick field goal to put this thing out of reach. I thought Stuart Skinner looked strong between the pipes, I thought Dylan Holloway was fantastic every time he was on the ice, nobody got hurt, and I thought the team as a whole played with more jump and focus than I probably expected. Even though I knew we weren’t going to get anything close to our opening day roster, the fact that I was able to watch Holloway, McLeod, and Puljujarvi was enough to keep me excited.

The Edmonton Oilers opened their pre-season with a 4-0 win over the Winnipeg Jets Sunday at Rogers Place.

The game will start at 8 p.m. Halfway through the second, Rittich stopped Jason Demers’ shot from the right side. Markus Niemelainen took a pass from Brad Malone in the high slot and fired a wrister past David Rittich.

It definitely felt like I moved a little bit better because I worked on my skating a lot this summer, so that's nice to feel."
