Hockey has arrived! The Calgary Flames will play a split squad series tonight with the Vancouver Canucks, one game will be played in Vancouver and the other in ...

It will once again be an uphill battle as the Flames added pieces, Connor McDavid owns the division and the And last but not least, it’ll be the first time the Flames will be without Matthew Tkachuk since he was drafted back in 2016. The Flames were a powerhouse last season, but lacked the star power and grit to advance deep into the playoffs. It will be the first time that Johnny Gaudreau won’t be in a Flames uniform since he made his NHL debut back on 4/13/14, scoring his first NHL goal against the Canucks. This year will be the first time Sean Monahan will not be wearing Flames colours since he was drafted back in 2013. For now, it’s about evaluating bubble players (Michael Stone, Sonny Milano) and seeing what players from the AHL are going to contend and push for roster spots (Matthew Phillips, Adam Ruzicka).

Flames Sunday Census: Who should play right wing on Calgary's ... (The Win Column)

The Calgary Flames open their preseason schedule tonight with a pair of games, split squad against the Vancouver Canucks. With a brand new core, the Flames ...

[Trevor Lewis](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/l/lewistr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) received just 2% of the votes in this week’s poll, but he is just one of a few options that could fill in that spot. Maybe [Adam Ruzicka](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/r/ruzicad01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) shifts over to the wing to get a regular spot in the NHL lineup, since the center position is basically spoken for. Invited to Calgary’s camp on a PTO because of the open slot in the top-nine, Milano is no doubt motivated to prove all 32 teams wrong and show that he deserves a regular spot in the top half of an NHL roster. After a truly stellar rookie season in the AHL, Pelletier looks to have all the tools to be an effective NHLer on a nightly basis. After a breakout season in Anaheim last year, he was not qualified by the Ducks and didn’t earn a contract from any team. The Calgary Flames open their preseason schedule tonight with a pair of games, split squad against the Vancouver Canucks.

Canucks Live Blog: Who will move roster meter against the Flames? (The Province)

Follow Canucks beat reporter Ben Kuzma as he chronicles the club's first home pre-season test in a split-squad meeting with the Flames.

Hits outside of net. Podkolzin with loose puck chance at side of net. If he can do those two things, he’s close to being an NHL player.” “It’s more of what we’ve seen from him in the past,” said Boudreau. You’d like to think Lockwood is capable of doing the latter, but the bench boss needs some convincing. Players can see the writing on the wall. Can he show better reads, positioning, defending and zone exits in the NHL? “We can always look for another offensive defenceman, and so a guy who can move the puck quick and skate, Rathbone has both of those qualities,” Boudreau said before the game. Most importantly, there was prospect progress to chart and nobody moved the meter more than Rathbone. The issue was settled when Michael Stone converted a power-play, cross-ice feed at 3:39 of overtime. Boudreau didn’t have a post-game update on Mikheyev and also said that Brock Boeser remains day-to-day. “And then you see if you’ve got something for the future.”

NOTES: Calgary's Nicolas Meloche sent winger Ilya Mikheyev into the sideboards about three minutes into the second. "He played well, he made the plays at the right time. "And obviously (I'm) happy with the result tonight. "Everyone wants it and everyone's kind of here to stay, and obviously camp's where guys make names for themselves and try and stick. Calgary will continue pre-season play Tuesday when it hosts Seattle. Jones, 23, made his NHL debut for Vegas last season. Silovs made 20 saves. "He made some major, big saves and at crucial times. Making a win is kind of the most important thing and we came up with that tonight."
