Trina McGee opens up with 'Boy Meets World' co-star Will Friedle ... (USA TODAY)

Will Friedle made a racist joke about "Boy Meets World" co-star Trina McGee looking like Aunt Jemima. Her response changed his life, he says.

"It was one moment when you said the syrup thing, I got mad, but I don't count that as my entire experience on the show. He added: "I love you. Now, McGee believes the "real tragedy" of that moment is all "the years that went by that we didn't talk about it." I said something stupid." You become part of the issue nowadays when you have to move in spaces with people of color and you don't really have to by right, but it would behoove you to learn as much about them as you can. "You were like, 'that was not OK.' And I was like, 'what?' " Friedle said. "I never said in the press that I (faced) these extreme racist moments," she added on the podcast. … You walked away and I remember literally shaking." We finished the scene and you came up to me–" "I had no idea what you were talking about. "In my head, I attached no cultural significance to that whatsoever. So I thought 'gonna make fun of her red hat.' That's as a far as my dumb (expletive) privileged mind saw it.

After she explained the offensive comment to him, he apologized and they hugged — but he was “literally shaking” afterward. “In my head, I attached no cultural significance to that whatsoever. Funny enough, a rebuttal was written to the Daily News by Lorraine Toussaint, who said, ‘No, you must acknowledge that these are two different races getting together …’ If I had to do it over and I could take my real stance — hindsight and everything — I would have wrote the opposite article.” I remember when I was doing ‘Angela’s Ashes’ episode, somehow my Black meter had slipped up and I was at about a 9. She shared on the podcast that her publicist and husband actually wrote the piece, which was published under her byline, but that she didn’t agree. “It’s true that we weren’t played against each other, but I won’t go so far to say we weren’t manipulated,” Strong said. Her costars were shocked by the revelation -- with Danielle Fishel swearing "on the lives of my children" it never happened.
