Nathan MacKinnon's deal is for 12.6 million AAV. He will be the highest-paid player in the league — at least for a bit.

Welcome back to Around the League — a series in which we examine news from around the National Hockey League, oftentimes through a Canucks-tinted lens.

MacKinnon has scored at a higher than point per game pace since the 2017-18 season, which was just the second year of his current seven year deal. This really doesn’t mean much for the Canucks, and won’t mean much unless Elias Pettersson turns in two Hart Trophy-calibre seasons this year and next before entering contract negotiations ahead of the 2024-25 season, when the cap is expected to go up. That means that any player signing a long term contract is certainly going to be cognizant of how high the salary cap will be in year three and beyond of any contract they sign today.

Now, the Avalanche will embark on the tough task of trying to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. MacKinnon also earned Hart finalist accolades in 2020 and 2021 and this spring, he led the Avalanche with 13 goals as they defeated the Lightning for their first Stanley Cup since 2001. “On my next deal, I’ll take less again,” he said, “because I want to win with this group.” Since then, his stock has risen further, especially now that he has a Stanley Cup on his resume. The following year, MacKinnon hit his career high of 99 points and the Avalanche won their first playoff round since 2008. That was a tumultuous year in Colorado, where head coach Patrick Roy resigned from the team less than two months before the beginning of the season. Sakic also elected to stick with Bednar and improvement came quickly, with MacKinnon leading the way. He missed another 10 games with a knee injury in his third season, finishing with 52 points in 72 games. But in world of the NHL’s hard salary cap, especially where growth has stalled due to the financial losses incurred as a result of the global pandemic, general managers have not yet cracked the code when it comes to offering maximum rewards to their top stars while also leaving themselves enough cap space to round out their rosters. Selected first overall by Colorado in the 2013 draft, MacKinnon jumped straight into the NHL as an 18-year-old. That will put him just ahead of Connor McDavid, who signed an eight-year, $100-million contract extension with an AAV of $12.5 million in July of 2017. A foot fracture limited him to 64 games in his sophomore season, where he tallied 38 points. “He has that rare combination of speed and power with a high compete level that makes him a generational player.

And it would no longer be seeing that salary cap spent on players entering their prime, it would now be on players exciting it. While Matthews and Marner were by no means bargains in their last go around, Matthews took up 14.64% of the Leafs cap space at the time his contract was signed, and Marner took up 13.38%. Perhaps it’s naive to think that economic drivers like global pandemics will be behind us in a few years and it will be nothing but smooth sailing financially for the NHL. Based on the current salary cap of $82.5M, MacKinnon’s contract takes up 15.27% of the salary cap.
