Nevertheless, Milano’s showed a good amount of promise and the Flames are undoubtedly familiar with him due to his time with the Ducks. But to this point he hasn’t landed anywhere else, perhaps due to his membership in the NHL’s murky middle class and how his development has progressed. The Calgary Flames have added another player to their training camp roster on a professional try-out.
The 26-year-old left-winger has accepted a training-camp tryout with the Flames.
With a strong pre-season showing, he might command more than Calgary’s general manager, Brad Treliving, can afford. As a PTO, Milano will still be able to field offers from other teams. Milano, listed at 6-foot and 194 lb., could slide in as a second or third-line winger.

He appeared in 66 games for the team last season, scoring a career-high 14 goals and adding 20 assists. Sonny Milano is joining the Calgary Flames on a professional tryout basis, the team announced on Monday. Milano is the latest addition to a Flames team that has seen some significant roster turnover in the offseason.
Milano, 26, was left unqualified by the Anaheim Ducks this offseason, thanks to a breakout campaign that likely would have led to a large arbitration award. The ...

For now, he’ll attend training camp with the team, and get a chance to remind them of the skill that scored two goals in three games against Calgary last season. The fact that he hasn’t found a contract yet likely has more to do with him searching for a good fit than the phone not ringing. Even with the losses of [Sonny Milano](https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/milanso01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-) finally has a training camp to attend. Still averaging just over 15 minutes a night, he nearly doubled his career points total, and potted 14 goals, a number he had hit as a rookie in 2017-18 but come nowhere near since. As with any PTO, this doesn’t mean Milano is actually on the Flames, only that he will be attending camp. It is, however, an opportunity for the team to get comfortable with the player and for the player to showcase himself to the entire league.
Sonny Milano is heading to the Calgary Flames' training camp, according to a report from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Milano is listed as a left wing but is likely available to play on either side, competing for a roster spot behind the likes of Jonathan Huberdeau, Andrew Mangiapane, Milan Lucic, and Jakob Pelletier. Milano signed a two-year, $3.4 million contract extension in July 2020, but was released to unrestricted free agency this summer. The Milano PTO offers the Flames some forward depth, as the veteran will be looking to compete for a spot in Calgary’s middle-six group.

The Calgary Flames continued their torrid off-season, reportedly inviting forward Sonny Milano to training camp on a professional tryout offer.
And for some reason, no one felt confident enough to offer Milano a guaranteed contract, forcing him to settle for a training camp invite. Still, Milano is too good to be without a permanent home this late into the summer. And if both sides elected to head down that route, the Ducks could've been saddled with a far higher number than they'd be comfortable paying him.
