Seahawks dismal in 27-7 loss at San Francisco 49ers (The Seattle Times)

Six days after one of the most feel-good wins of the Pete Carroll era, the Seahawks came crashing back to earth Sunday.

The lead was cut to 20-7 with 5:25 left in the third quarter. The pass, intended for DK Metcalf, was instead picked off by Charvarius Ward. The 49ers played the final three quarters with former starter Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback after second-year man Trey Lance suffered a serious ankle injury that resulted in him being carted off the field. And a special teams mistake led to a fumbled punt that led to a San Francisco touchdown — one of three turnovers in the first half, all in the second quarter. Still, the Seahawks held and were poised to get the ball back late in the first half hoping for a drive to get back in the game, still down just 13-0. Typifying the slog of a day that it was for the offense was a curious play call in the second quarter to have running back DeeJay Dallas throw a pass on second-and-5 from the 49ers 8-yard line.

Three things we learned from the Seahawks' 27-7 loss to the 49ers (The Seattle Times)

As a whole, the 49ers defense finished with nine quarterback hits, two sacks and seven tackles for loss. The ball bounced away and was recovered by San Francisco’s Ross Dwelley at the 22. A few minutes later, the game swung in the 49ers’ favor once again, as Seahawks special teamer Xavier Crawford bumped into Tyler Lockett on a San Francisco punt. A series of crucial first-half mistakes kept the Seahawks off the board and gave San Francisco plenty of chances to score. On the next drive, the Seahawks tried a trick play. After an emotional season-opening 17-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football” last week, the Seahawks came back to earth in Week 2 against San Francisco.

The highest point Seattle reached was on special teams when rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen blocked a field goal attempt that led to a touchdown, the first time that’s happened for this team in 10 years. Lockett found a lot of holes in the Niners’ zones, catching nine of his 11 targets from Geno Smith and totaling a team-high 107 receiving yards. Woods used his surplus size and power to blow up several plays in the backfield, posting three tackles for a loss and one pass breakup. Waldron’s lowest point came in the second quarter when he called for a trick play pass from fourth-string running back DeeJay Dallas. That was the case today, as the Seahawks got beat up on both sides of the line of scrimmage. and sometimes the bar, well…

Seahawks must fix their offensive woes before season gets away ... (The Seattle Times)

The Seahawks offense has now gone six quarters without scoring. On Sunday, their offensive inefficiency and scoring deficiency was on full display.

He was rightly praised for his poised and efficient game against Denver, but most of that damage was done in the first half, when Smith connected on his first 13 passes and 17 of his first 18. And that won’t be easy until the Seahawks unleash a running attack that forces defenses to loosen up coverage. In the long run (which the Seahawks had far too few of), the Seahawks forced their defense to be on the field far too long, which was compounded by some tackling issues that helped prolong 49ers drives. The Seahawks must figure out a way to once again turn Metcalf from a big-play threat to a big-play maker. — The emotion and elation of Seattle’s season-opening win over Denver helped gloss over a troubling trend: The Seahawks didn’t score at all in the second half in that game. The Seahawks’ seven points came courtesy of a blocked field goal by Tariq Woolen that Michael Jackson scooped up and took 86 yards to the end zone.

Reporter Bob Condotta grades the Seahawks' Week 2 loss to the ... (The Seattle Times)

Simply put, Seattle has lots of questions to answer before Atlanta comes into town next Sunday. Reporter Bob Condotta grades the Week 2 loss.

Brooks and Cody Barton led the Seahawks with 11 tackles each. According to ESPN, the 49ers had 113 yards after contact, their most since 2009. But no one else had a QB hit and the 189 rushing yards allowed loomed large. Tackle Al Woods had another strong game with seven tackles, three for a loss and a pass defense. And obviously there were issues all along the line with run blocking. The rest of the receiving corps has three for 28. Lockett had 107 yards on nine receptions, his 16th 100-yard receiving game. Grade: D. Grade: C-minus. But as noted, the hope that Seattle can lean on its running game this year the way it did at the end of last season is beginning to look like wishful thinking until proven otherwise. Grade: C. Rookie Kenneth Walker III had 10 yards on four attempts in his NFL debut.

Unfortunately, those efforts were squandered thanks to the ineptitude of Smith and his counterparts, who finished with punts on each of their first three drives and only picked up a single first down on those possessions. Though they weren't able to make many quick stops to earn themselves a much-needed breather, the Seahawks forced two punts and blocked a field goal on their first three defensive drives of the half, keeping the team within two scores. Such fortune wasn't bestowed upon Clint Hurtt's unit on Sunday, however, and the physical 49ers were able to ground and pound from the opening drive against a defense leaving tackles on the field in bunches. The first snap actually worked as Walker took the direct snap and wiggled his way to a five-yard gain. Trailing 13-0 early in the second quarter, he tried to squeeze a pass into a tight window to Lockett on a post route, only for the pass to be deflected into the air by safety Talanoa Hufanga and intercepted off the carom by Tashaun Gipson to give San Francisco outstanding field position. Failing to build off a strong first start to the season, Smith completed 24 of 30 passes for only 198 yards and threw a costly first half interception, which was one of three critical turnovers by the visitors.

As for the four-back personnel grouping, it may be a smart idea to return the formation to where it came from collecting dust and not touch it again. "I thought it was going to be a touchdown, honestly," Smith said when asked what went through his head on the play. Taking the direct snap out of pistol, rookie running back Ken Walker III faked a handoff and then bolted to his right, turning what looked to be a tackle for loss somehow into a five-yard gain down to San Francisco's eight-yard line. Turning the football over three times and converting on just two out of seven third down opportunities, Smith and his counterparts never found a rhythm playing against one of the NFL's best defenses. Rolling out to his right to evade multiple oncoming pass rushers, quarterback Geno Smith had just completed his longest pass of the afternoon, linking up with Tyler Lockett on a 27-yard crossing route down to the San Francisco 13-yard line. To make the look legal, Smith slid out wide as a receiver, serving as little more than a decoy.

49ers' smart, 'swarming' defense puts on show in win vs. Seahawks (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Trey Lance's injury stole the spotlight Sunday at Levi's Stadium, but the 49ers' defense put on a show.

Coming away with a victory, being penalized once and watching their defense shut down the Seahawks always will be a recipe for success in Santa Clara. Luckily for the 49ers, Seattle couldn't capitalize on the penalty. The fact that we were clean on that is a big reason we won." The ball was tipped in the air and Warner came away with it. That one time the 49ers were flagged didn't come without controversy, too. "Just being smarter with certain things, and when you're suffocating an offense like we have the past two weeks, that can be game-changing. As a team, the Seahawks ran for 36 yards on 14 carries. The 49ers were flagged for only one penalty all game long, giving the Seahawks an extra 26 yards. You never want to give a team life, especially a rival in Seattle that's been tough to close out since I've been here and before. I think when you turn the tape on, you see that." Former first-round draft pick Rashaad Penny, and Kenneth Walker III -- the Seahawks' second pick of the second round this past April -- combined to carry the ball 10 times for 25 yards. That's especially true on the ground.

Against the 49ers, who were able to grind the ball 45 times for 189 yards, the Seahawks could barely manage 36 yards on 14 carries. However, rookie Tariq Woolen and veteran Mike Jackson deserve a spot on the Studs list as they directly contributed to Seattle’s only score of the afternoon. Seattle joined the Indianapolis Colts as the only teams in Week 2 to fail to score an offensive point. Seattle’s defense actually played admirably all things considered, but could not stem the tide of San Francisco, or make up for the anemic Seattle offense. It was a sloppy afternoon for the Seahawks, who were flagged with 10 penalties for 106 yards, which is only 114 yards less than Seattle netted all afternoon. Seattle’s four-game win streak over the San Francisco 49ers came to a screeching halt as they fell 27-7 to the division rival.
