But Song isn’t able to capitalize and now Sandhagen is up and against the fence. Sandhagen breaks, Song lands a left, Sandhagen lands a combo. Sandhagen comes charging forward, throws a body kick and Song catches it and trips Sandhagen to the mat. And song comes out on the lead to start. Now Song is the one holding the center though, with Sandhagen stepping out and looking for big shots. Sandhagen posting and standing but Song staying sticky. Sandhagen feints a takedown and Song sells out to defend. Sandhagen turns is back and Song jumps it! Sandhagen comes in lazily and Song cracks him with a huge left hook. I think he’s still one of the better guys in this division and I know I’ll see him again in the octagon. Said it before and I still believe it. Sandhagen (15-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC), who entered the fight ranked No. As the round wore on, Sandhagen's volume again was the story, and he shot forward for a takedown with a little more than a minute remaining, and he finished the frame in top position. Song pressed forward to start the fourth, landing a few heavy shots down the middle before quickly sweeping his opponent to the canvas. Song tried to load up on big punches down the middle, but Sandhagen bobbed and weaved his way out of trouble. Song briefly wobbled Sandhagen with a crisp left early in the frame, though he recovered quickly and looked to do damage in tight with well-placed elbows. Sandhagen walked forward at the start of the contest, switching stances and mixing attacks with punches and kicks, as well as testing his opponent's wrestling defense early.

The continued punishment saw the gruesome cut get even worse and by the end of the fourth round, Song complained that he couldn’t even see any longer thanks to all the blood pouring into his eyes. After the restart, Sandhagen made it a priority to really control the pace while putting constant pressure on Song as he kept him guessing with a variety of strikes and still mixing in takedown attempts. In return, Sandhagen continued to show his creativity with his attacks including the well-timed elbow strike that sliced open Song over the eyebrow. While it may not have been the definitive ending he wanted, Sandhagen caused the damage that led to the stoppage, which ultimately got him the win. I wanted to see the scorecards to see if I was winning or not. The gash was courtesy of an elbow delivered by Sandhagen that sliced open Song through his eyebrow as the cutman continued to furiously work on him between rounds.

These people I’m fighting, I feel like I have more in common with them than most people, so when I see something upsetting happen to them and the fight is over, I have a lot of compassion for that person. Overall, Sandhagen talked about the bout with a sense of accomplishment. Where he goes from here, he’ll largely leave up to the UFC. The cut wasn’t a result of an unintentional clash of heads or a foul. However, a large part of him views the way things played out Saturday as unfortunate.
