TIFF: "Green Book" director Peter Farrelly takes on another historical dramedy that should delight moviegoers and maybe Academy voters.
Such is the theme of “The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” which speaks to its kicky title and Farrelly’s comedic bent before easing Chickie into hell and letting him sort it out for himself. With a number of twinkly-eyed moments that hinge on crazy fate and “Forrest Gump” coincidence to spare, Chickie sets off for Vietnam. [Peter Farrelly](https://www.indiewire.com/t/peter-farrelly/)’s “ [The Greatest Beer Run Ever](https://www.indiewire.com/t/the-greatest-beer-run-ever/)” is his first film since he won Best Picture for “Green Book,” a film embraced by audiences and maligned by critics. After his own friends and family express their disbelief that knucklehead Chickie (of all people!) would execute any scheme that required a modicum of forethought, the New York native can’t take it anymore. Like many Americans in the late ’60s, Chickie doesn’t know exactly why America is at war, but he sure as hell knows he supports it and his many friends who have been carted off to Vietnam to, uhh, maybe fight the Commies or something? As one character tells Chickie late in the film, his heart is solid gold, but it’s his brain people need to worry about.
Zac Efron is surprisingly charming in 'The Greatest Beer Run Ever,' but the screenplay and Peter Farrelly's film is just too damn shallow.
If ever there were a movie that seems perpetually on the verge of playing “Fortunate Son,” it’s this one. The acting is similarly all over the map; Chickie’s pals’ mug and bellow as broadly as the chorus in a high school production of “West Side Story,” and his family members are similarly cartoonish. About the highest compliment you can pay “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” is that the soundtrack is well-curated, avoiding the obvious needle drops. As a result, when the serious beats arrive, they all seem like they’re out of a spoof movie; the Vietnam scenes here look like something out of a third, heretofore unknown “Hot Shots!” installment. Efron is as charming as ever and even pulls a few laughs out of the meager screenplay. But first, Farrelly stages scenes of protest and counter-protest back home that make “Forrest Gump” seem comparatively nuanced; to call the picture’s politics simplistic is an understatement.

When filmmaker Peter Farrelly last attended the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, his feel-good message movie Green Book would take home the.
As he’s reminded by the gruff but philosophical Arthur (Russell Crowe), a war correspondent for Look Magazine, there are a lot of wars going on in Vietnam, but the most important is the public relations one. Wanting to do his bit for his pals’ morale, Chickie hops on a cargo ship with no plans other than to distribute the now toasty cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon from his seemingly bottomless duffle bag, then simply turn around and head back home. But while both the title and the set-up, taken from the book of the same name by John Donohue and JT Molloy, might suggest something more along the brightly satirical lines of the movies he used to make with his brother, Bobby, Farrelly’s loftier impulses work against the material.
It does't look like Peter Farrelly will be repeating his 'Green Book' award run.
While carrying out this peculiar mission, he meets Russell Crowe’s Coates, a war photographer who has seen the failures of the conflict first-hand and teaches Chickie all about it. [The Wrap](https://www.thewrap.com/the-greatest-beer-run-ever-movie-review-zac-efron/)‘s Steve Pond, while Green Book was “grounded by two fine actors,” The Greatest Beer Run Ever is “clunkier,” as it “lurches from silliness to preachiness in a way that’s rarely satisfying.” But, for

And diagnoses can sometimes be a little bit arbitrary in that fact. "And the cognitive behavioural therapy is really just referring to the interrelationship between our thoughts, feelings and behaviours, which is represented within that agoraphobia cycle and targeting each of these areas with specific strategies to enable that cycle to change and to be able to participate more normally in those situations." "Treatment, regardless of the severity, and also regardless of whether they're meeting all of the criteria, or if they're sitting quite sub clinically, would be under a cognitive behavioural therapy," Ms Ackland said. "Then it will go all the way down to someone who continues to participate in certain situations, but does feel some level of out of normal range anxiety, or less enjoyment in these situations and might be reliant on certain strategies or people in order to continue functioning and we will consider that quite mild." "These are often clients that find it difficult to even leave their homes to the point of going to the letterbox, the distress upon doing so would be significant to the point potentially of panic. "So, in that way, we can self-diagnose to the extent that we look through that criteria and say, yes, I do that, yes, I think that, yes, I experienced this. "We certainly have seen clients post-COVID that note COVID as a time that seemed to be associated with a worsening of their symptoms, with an onset of symptoms that weren't there before and also a lapse in symptoms that had otherwise improved to be in a very good place pre-pandemic." "A diagnosis is a label that refers to a collection of symptoms. "We would still want that to be an improved experience to him." "And that might be the case for Zac Efron that he might find that he is reticent, to go into these situations, experiences more discomfort than he would like, maybe feels like his enjoyment is somewhat impaired, because he would prefer not to be there and want to leave. "And if it's something that they are still quite functional, and the distress is only mild, it actually wouldn't satisfy criteria for that diagnosis, not to discount that it might be something that's challenging for a client. "So, we don't want to discount the fact that someone might be having difficulty or challenge with some area of their life that could be improved.

Maybe his conclusions about the disordered chaos and inhumane pillaging of the land, received from a rumpled photojournalist (Russell Crowe) knocking back whiskies in a Saigon bar, only feel so matter-of-fact because every Vietnam movie ever made got there first. Excepting only one haunting shot of a body falling from a helicopter until it vanishes into the canopy of trees, there’s nothing authentic enough to inspire the kind of transformative horror absorbed by Chickie. As machine-gunned villages flood the TV stations, Chickie refuses to watch and peacenik protesters welcome his sister (Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, yes, daughter to Andy) to their ranks, he digs in his heels on his blinkered notion of patriotism, yelling about the media’s negative skew with his buddies and the bartender (Bill Murray) at their regular dive. The actor’s natural charm only gets him so far, however, the limits of his abilities visible every time he squinches up his face or dully goes blank to convey that it is now time to have some feelings. He gets by because he’s using more than his wits, which are considerable; he figures out how to score rides between checkpoints after getting hip to the fact that because his mission is so difficult to believe, everyone assumes he’s CIA with a bad cover. Channeling this spirit of boozy benevolence is the main thing going for The Greatest Beer Run Ever, Peter Farrelly’s otherwise deficient follow-up to his flummoxing best picture recipient Green Book.

In his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Green Book, director Peter Farrelly makes another bid for middlebrow prestige with The Greatest Beer Run Ever.
But while the film isn’t quite as risible as Green Book (it’s not a glorified white savior story in buddy-comedy drag, in other words), it has an awfully similar arc: A myopic doofus has his eyes opened by the hardships of others, gaining edification through the suffering he witnesses (in this case, on a countrywide scale). Our coverage of the Toronto International Film Festival continues all week. For more of A.A. Having just won Best Picture with a movie about an Italian American from midcentury New York, is Farrelly following further in the footsteps of Francis Ford Coppola? He’s a “war tourist” getting in over his head for the story. In practice, though, that’s akin to Futurama’s savvy spoof of M*A*S*H*, with Farrelly toggling But soon enough, he’s on a cargo ship headed for the war, duffel bag of PBR over his shoulder. Beer Run might have worked a little better as satire, with a version of Chickie too thick-skulled to ever acknowledge what a bad idea this little bring-the-party-to-them pilgrimage was. Lately, the writer-director has simply been reversing the ratio of Goofus to Gallant. Here, as in Green Book, there is the anchoring presence of an amiable New Yawk lunk: John “Chickie” Donohue (Zac Efron), a hard-drinking Brooklyn dude with a not-particularly-enlightened perspective on the war in Vietnam. One night in his local watering hole (tended by Farrelly’s old Kingpin secret weapon, Bill Murray), he hatches a foolhardy scheme: He’ll bring a beer to each of his four buddies still stationed in Vietnam, as a thank you for their service. How are you gonna keep him on the flatulence farm when he’s seen the bright lights of the Kodak Theatre?
