Countdown to Kickoff: Bucs-Cowboys, Week 1 2022 (Buccaneers.com)

The Buccaneers should be prepared to see a lot of blitzes through the interior with a rebuild on the interior of the offensive line, but Tom Brady's quick ...

They can run the ball with the two running backs, and they can throw the ball as well. Prescott threw the ball 58 times last year against the Bucs but with a rebuilt line in 2022 and a decimated receiver room, Dallas will need to achieve a balanced attack with an effective run game and aerial show producing yards-after-catch. "They're similar to last year – they're very big upfront, they're quick on the defensive side of the ball. He is a run-pass threat that the Buccaneers' defense will have to game-plan for. In a historic turnaround last season under Dan Quinn, the Cowboys underwent an identity shift – carried by the production of the defense down the stretch. · Conversely, there is a reason many teams have stopped heavily-blitzing the Cowboys or utilizing a man-centric scheme on the back end, that is because Dak Prescott is an escape artist. Godwin is recovering from a torn MCL and ACL in his right knee, suffered during the team's Week 15 loss to the Saints. He has been ruled out of the matchup, but inches closer to a return from offseason knee surgery. On the opposite side of the ball, opponents have basically abandoned the run against the top ranked run defense over the previous three seasons. He created multiple looks up front last season to keep offenses off-balance, with innovative stunts/blitzes along the line from a variety of places. Those numbers illustrate both the ball-hawks in the secondary and pressure produced by the defensive front, allowing the back end to feast. · The Cowboys' defense generated 188 pressures, third most in the NFL in 2021.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers preview vs. Dallas Cowboys (The Pewter Plank)

Here is a look ahead at the storylines surrounding the Buccaneers and the Cowboys ahead of their Week One game later tonight.

Last year, Tampa rushed for the 7th most yards in the league, and if we can make Dallas respect the threat of the run, that should slow down their lethal pass rush, and take some of the pressure off of our offensive line to hold their blocks for as long. One big difference for the Cowboys this year is the loss of Amari Cooper, who was their team’s leading receiver in last year’s game against us and was second on their team for the year. Another key piece to success on Sunday night, will be to come at the Cowboys with a balanced attack. Diggs was able to pick off Brady last year, so it will be up to Tom and his receivers to minimize Diggs’ risk this year and minimize his reward. Dak Prescott threw for over 400 yards in last year’s version of this game, and controlling their passing game will have to be a focal point for Tampa Bay this year. Carlton Davis, Jamel Dean, and Sean Murphy-Bunting will all be very busy with this Dallas offense that likes to pass the ball a lot!

[Mike Evans](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/16737/mike-evans) in the third quarter provided the only touchdown of the night for both teams. He was injured on a third-down sack by outside linebacker [Micah Parsons](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4361423/micah-parsons), who spun his way to Brady with defensive tackle [Osa Odighizuwa](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4035840/osa-odighizuwa) barreling behind him and hitting Smith from behind. "That's the reality of it. He surrendered a sack for a loss of seven yards to Parsons. Both of Parsons' sacks came on third down, which, along with red zone scoring, was a struggle for Tampa. He missed the start of training camp and did not participate in the preseason. Even the week leading up to the game, he was still practicing in an orange non-contact jersey and was a game-time decision. He was ready to go and I was happy about that." "I'll go and I'll try to get more information [Sunday] or [Monday]."

Dominant Defense Drives Bucs to Season-Opening Win in Dallas (Buccaneers.com)

Leonard Fournette led a balanced offense with 127 rushing yards and Devin White led a swarming defense that didn't allow a point after the opening drive in ...

The Bucs committed their first turnover on the next drive, as Brady tried to throw a quick pass to Evans out of the slot but S Donovan Wilson made a diving interception at the Dallas 48-yard line. Dallas chose to go for it on fourth-and-three from Tampa Bay's 42 and White broke it up with a pass defensed that was nearly a pick-six. The drive stalled there but Succop came on once gain and drilled it from 47 yards to make it a 12-3 game with 14 seconds left in the half. The Cowboys got a quick first down on two Elliott runs but then faced a third-and-six and saw the drive end on a seven-yard sack by White. After rookie Jake Camarda's first NFL punt – following one that was erased by an inadvertent whistle call (it actually hit the hanging scoreboard) and one that drew a running into the kicker penalty – the Cowboys started again at their own 20 due to a touchback. The Cowboys faced a third-and-four at the 14 when the first quarter came to an end. Tampa Bay started the ensuing drive with both Fournette and White in the backfield but opened with a 19-yard sideline strike to Evans. A 51-yard punt and a nine-yard return by Jaelon Darden set the Bucs up at their own 31. Two Elliott runs got the ball across midfield and led to a new set of downs at the Bucs' 42. The veteran kicker nailed the 44-yard attempt to tie the game with five minutes left in the first quarter. Dallas got the ball first but had to start at their own 14 after a great open-field tackle by ILB K.J. On offense, Leonard Fournette's 127 yards led a grind-it-out attack that consistently moved the ball but struggled to finish drives in the red zone.

Bucs seemed dull in the most magnificent way possible (Tampa Bay Times)

John Romano | The Bucs were understated and effective in a season-opening win, Just like their new head coach.

But it will be over in a couple of hours and we’ll move on to next week.” “(The Cowboys) didn’t get too many runs on us, and we were happy with that,” Bowles said. Tom Brady will not lead the NFL in passing yards like last season, and that’s probably a good thing. And it’s always best not to read too much into a season opener. Basically, the Bucs seemed to trade fireworks for focus. The last time the Cowboys were held to three points at home was in 2002. Everybody was on the same page, and it showed. Brady was not stellar, but he was a lot better than Dak Prescott. Yes, the Bucs are back between the hash marks, and that’s where they do their finest work. “That’s the standard now. If you want an offense that takes a lot of risks, you may have to watch last year’s game tapes. No public criticism, no running up the score, no breathless revelations about the quarterback.

The Buccaneers did win the most important game in that stretch, a 2020 Divisional Playoff Round matchup in New Orleans that helped propel Tampa Bay to Super Bowl LV, but they will probably need to break the Saints' current victory streak if they want to repeat as NFC South champs. In 2021, the Buccaneers finally broke the Saints' stranglehold on the division title but still lost twice to their rivals, 36-27 in the Superdome and 9-0 at Raymond James Stadium. An improved Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense makes them NFC ... (Pro Football Focus)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense handled the Dallas Cowboys' offense with relative ease on Sunday Night Football thanks to an evolved scheme from new head ...

And it was arguably the biggest issue facing the Bucs last season. So, placing a safety 12 yards off the line at the snap instead of six yards may mean he’s involved in fewer plays, but the ones he is involved in (or he’s preventing) now are higher leverage. [Tampa Bay Buccaneers](https://www.pff.com/nfl/teams/tampa-bay-buccaneers/30)‘ defensive dominance of the [Dallas Cowboys](https://www.pff.com/nfl/teams/dallas-cowboys/9) on Sunday Night Football should come as little surprise. That means two safeties are support players versus the run as opposed to having gap assignments (there are exceptions, but this is generally the case). Head coach Todd Bowles has always been one of the most aggressive defensive minds in the NFL, and now his defense is evolving. And as you can see, the Bucs' game plan for Dallas didn’t revolve around stopping the run. Of Dallas’ 69 offensive snaps, none gained more than 22 yards and only three gained more than 15 yards. They allowed 18 carries for 71 yards and -.027 EPA per rush. While teams around the league are deploying this strategy to varying degrees of success, the Bucs have the luxury of a defensive line and linebacker duo that can stifle opposing run games on their own. Tampa Bay had a 56.4% rate of split-field coverages after only 38.8% last season. The Bucs held the league’s top-scoring offense a season ago to a grand total of three points. The [fifth-ranked defensive line](https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2022-nfl-defensive-line-rankings-los-angeles-rams-take-top-spot-tampa-bay-buccaneers-land-at-no-5), [seventh-ranked linebacker corps](https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-linebacker-unit-rankings-2022-san-francisco-49ers-seattle-seahawks) and [second-ranked secondary](https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-secondary-rankings-tiers-2022) all lived up to that billing in Week 1.
