Albert Pujols Retiring After Season Would Be A Mistake (The Cold Wire)

The St. Louis Cardinals legend and one of the greatest right-handed hitters in MLB history, is still driving the ball at a high level in his 22nd.

[Rickey Henderson](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/henderi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) by 22 games for the fourth most in history. [Babe Ruth](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ruthba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) for second all-time and 101 away from [Hank Aaron](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/aaronha01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=&utm_medium=referral) for the most ever. Passing one of the greatest players of all time in two huge statistical categories should be enough of a reason to keep playing. Pujols has driven in 46 runs this year and at least 50 in every full season of his career. Speaking of Ruth, if Pujols can get to 700 home runs this season that would put him only 15 away from passing Ruth for third in career home runs. Pujols has been great in the playoffs throughout his career. For the year, Pujols looks like one of the best hitters in all of baseball against left-handed pitching. Also, the DH being added to the National League has helped Pujols in a big way. Pujols will not be a serviceable fielder for any team, but he can DH any day with the best of them. Louis Cardinals](https://thecoldwire.com/sports/mlb/st-louis-cardinals) legend and one of the greatest right-handed hitters in MLB history, is still driving the ball at a high level in his 22nd season. Pujols homered for the 17th time on Saturday night and that got him one step closer to 700 for his career.

A St. Louis Cardinals legend is retiring at the end of the 2022 season. How he finishes his career is less important than the overall career he's had.

Through his first nine seasons and one game, Pujols batted .334 with 368 homers, 1115 RBI, and 1075 runs scored. His average season was a .334 batting average with 41 HR, 124 RBI, and 119 runs. Louis Cardinals legend is retiring at the end of the 2022 season. Pujols is a team-first player before anything else, which makes it picture perfect that his 696th and 697th homers have come in very high-leverage situations to help the Cardinals come from behind twice. Louis, where he won three MVP Awards and two World Series titles from 2001-11, Pujols looked like a shadow of his former self early in the season when he had just a pair of home runs in April and May and went homerless in June. Throughout his stirring home run surge, Pujols has been adamant that he will retire following the season regardless of how many homers he has. It was his second homer in as many days, as the [hunt for the legendary 700-homer club](https://www.mlb.com/cardinals/news/albert-pujols-2022-milestone-tracker) continues. Maybe it’s the view that Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said he takes in every day when he gets to the ballpark. “It’s unbelievable,” Cardinals starting pitcher José Quintana said.
