It's as if Notre Dame continues to call a game thinking it has a really good offensive line, but through two games the offensive line has been average at times and poor at other times. Tyler Buchner needs to be more involved in the run game, and I know he was knocked out, but the only time the run game really looks good is when he's in there. *** The play of the Notre Dame offensive line and tight ends in the run game was incredibly problematic in the first half, and the offensive line also had issues with protection. *** Buchner also had a big miss on a deep throw to Braden Lenzy late in the first half. Buchner missed a wide open Michael Mayer on the late pick six, that was on the quarterback, but Jayden Thomas did a really poor job coming back to the football and fighting for the ball. *** Marshall challenged Notre Dame's pass game all day, and there were not enough field shots against it. When Buchner was used primarily as a drop back passer he struggled against a Marshall defense that everyone knew was going to mix up looks and try to bait a young quarterback into mistakes, and Buchner made two HUGE mistakes in those situations. You can chalk that up to youth and inexperience, but that youth and inexperience was really costly. *** There were multiple miscommunications, and not just on plays like the simple T-E stunt that resulted in Jarrett Patterson giving up a hit. I'm not sure if Lugg should have helped (I thought he should have, but that' snot the point), but the point is Fisher thought he did, so someone messed up there from a communication and assignment standpoint. Notre Dame fell to 0-2 with a devastating home loss to Marshall. The Herd beat Notre Dame by a 26-21 score.

For the longest time, Notre Dame won games like it lost at to Marshall. Now, the Irish need to take a long look in the mirror and try to get better.
All of the jokes and the memes and GIFs floating across social media. How does a team that has had no answers the first two weeks find some? But when Freeman looks in the mirror, what will he see? Marshall was better in a game where Notre Dame needs to be. You can do that after going for 16 yards on 31 carries and a touchdown while being the best back on the field. “I’ve got to be a leader,” he said. Sideways it has gone after a 26-21 loss to a team from the Sun Belt Conference. In the trenches. And so, we got to look and see. But throughout the entire game, there’s moments where there’s a lack of execution for whatever reason it is, and we’ve got to look at those moments say, ‘Okay, what do we have to do to fix the personnel? “We have to look at the lack of executions in all phases of our team, and where we can improve that. We’ve got to take a hard look at ourselves and get back to work and find ways to improve as a football team.” We all have to look at ourselves, starting with the head coach on down, and say, ‘Okay, what do I have to do? What do we have to do to fix the issues that we’re having?’ And not just focus on the end result.”

The rest of the Notre Dame backfield? It was an entirely different thing when Marshall did the same on Saturday. An anemic offense that struggles to do the littlest of things right.

When things are going not so well, that’s, to me, when the character and leadership will show.” I said what I needed to say without criticizing the lame “tradition” of the swaying. Or maybe I just did — but there’s the tunnel and I’m gone y’all... And so, as I said to the guys in the locker room, that’s when we need our leadership the most, right? When things are at the toughest moments, no matter if it’s starting off 0-2, no matter where we go from here, when it matters the most in those toughest and hardest moments, that’s when your leadership has to come out.” And he has to continue to understand that that’s where you have to be a leader, and you have to make sure that everybody’s watching you.
At least Alabama escaped what would've been a dreadful loss. No. 6 Texas A&M lost 17-14 to Appalachian State, sending the Aggies tumbling in the early Bowl ...
But this year was supposed to be different: A&M was picked as a near-lock for the New Year's Six and even as the top team in the SEC West. 18 Wisconsin could rise out of the Big Ten West and make a run at the conference championship and a playoff berth evaporated completely with a 17-14 loss to Washington State. Is this offensive front capable of winning along the line of scrimmage against Arkansas, Georgia and the best the SEC has to offer? The Wildcats held UF to 279 yards of offense and intercepted quarterback Anthony Richardson twice in a 26-16 win that should settle a few things in the SEC East. It's not that Appalachian State is a pushover, since we know the Mountaineers are among the top teams in the Group of Five. The Cougars also face Notre Dame and Arkansas in October, providing even more opportunity to play a big role in the makeup of this year's New Year's Six. History tells us Alabama will bounce back and remain one of the teams to beat in the race for the national championship. Kansas is 2-0 for the first time since 2011 after a 55-42 overtime win against West Virginia capped by a walk-off pick-six in the first extra frame. The Cougars are set to take a big leap into the playoff conversation after bouncing back from a missed field goal at the of regulation and one in overtime to beat future Big 12 cohort Baylor 26-20 in double overtime. Down the road, there's a chance this team looks back on the UNC loss and wonders what could've been; as proven last year, an unbeaten Group of Five team with solid non-conference wins against the Power Five could make an argument for the College Football Playoff. While Texas came up just short, the performance bodes well for the team's chances in an unpredictable Big 12 and should put wind in the program's sails after a dreadful 2021 season. Sometimes a loss isn't just a loss, even if the Longhorns had multiple opportunities in the second half to put Alabama away and secure a tenure-making victory for second-year coach Steve Sarkisian.
Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Baylor all went down Saturday, bringing new teams into the hunt for the College Football Playoff.
Williams and Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison (7 catches, 172 yards, 2 TDs) hooked up for two first-half scores, too. Week 3 opponent Washington is a step up in competition and a good test on the road. This is the first must-win game of many for Brent Venables, and it could be the last must-win game for Huskers coach Scott Frost. The Tigers an easier path than Michigan to a conference championship in the ACC, but there are still questions about whether they can run the table. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh named McCarthy the starter for Week 3 against UConn. 4 for now, but there is a long road to get to the finale against Ohio State. McCarthy (11 of 12, 229 yards, 3 TDs) averaged 19.1 yards per attempt, and Cade McNamara (4 of 6, 26 yards, INT) did not respond as well in relief. Stroud hit 16 of 24 passes for 351 yards and four TDs. A total of 15 different Georgia players caught a pass in the share-the-wealth offense, and the ground game cruised with the standard 4.0 yards per carry. The College Football Playoff semifinals will be on Dec. That is a stunner given the offseason back and forth with Alabama coach Nick Saban. Appalachian State beat No.
Imagine the swing in emotions Texas A&M fans went through in Week 2. It felt great to watch Texas lose 20-19 in the final minute to No.
McCarthy in a 56-10 blowout against Hawaii, and the sophomore did not disappoint. Iowa managed just 150 total yards in a 10-7 loss to rival Iowa State, but that wasn't the worst part. Coach Mark Stoops passed Bear Bryant for the most wins in program history with 61 in the process. Compound that with the fact every Big Ten East team is 2-0 so far, and you have another compelling reason for the conference to scrap divisions. The Trojans put on a passing clinic in the first that half that impressed Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, who was in attendance to watch his son Brenden. Riley, however, will need to develop a closer mentality throughout the season, which continues against Fresno State in Week 3. Stanford did cut the lead to 13 points and had an onside kick attempt in the fourth quarter but never quite threatened. It’s a painful loss in the Irish’s first-ever game against a Sun Belt opponent, and those stick in South Bend longer than they should. This was a striking example of "losing twice" after the top-five showdown with the Buckeyes. Tyler Buchner (18 of 32, 201 yards, 2 rushing TDs, 2 INTs) struggled with accuracy and turnovers, and the Irish generated a running game that averaged just 3.5 yards per carry. 6 team in the country. The Wildcats earn Mark Stoops the mark of the all-time winningest coach in Kentucky history with a 26–16 win over Florida. It’s almost unthinkable that a team could be this bad in these situations and it’s a conundrum that defied conventional wisdom and is undoubtedly deeply frustrating for the Huskers’ program. Frost came into the season on the hot seat, and this 1–2 start will do nothing to get him any closer to being off of it.

A third Notre Dame interception gave Marshall the ball back with 3:01 on the clock. After an Irish punt, the Thundering Herd took over at its own six-yard line with a little over 10 minutes to go. With a second and three inside the Irish five, Jayson Ademilola broke through the line of scrimmage to drag the Marshall running back down for a loss of three. After the Irish failed to convert a fourth and one in their own territory, Marshall used a 30-yard rush down the left sideline to work their way into the red zone. The Thundering Herd marched 74 yards in 12 plays and connected on a 21-yard field goal by Rece Verhoff to take the lead at 9-7 into halftime. Blake Grupe was true on the extra point and the Irish took a 7-6 lead with three minutes left in the half.
