From start to finish, Patient Number 9 is an inspired and consistent Ozzy studio offering. And like Ordinary Man, Ozzy and Watt have recruited an impressive A-list assortment of renowned rockers to contribute to the album. Following the same game plan as its predecessor, Patient Number 9 sees Ozzy working once more with producer/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Andrew Watt. Yet, while his health and the pandemic put his farewell tour on hold, he has been as prolific as ever in the studio, releasing Ordinary Man in 2020 and returning just two years later with his new album, Patient Number 9.

And unlike Ordinary Man, Patient Number 9 is a more focused work; the pieces fit together more easily, most likely a result of producer Watt's growing relationship with Osbourne. Ozzy Osbourne: Patient Number 9 - Fantastically overblown guest-fest (The Irish Times)

The Prince of Darkness summons his musical friends for his second solo album since Parkinson's diagnosis.

Since a diagnosis of Parkinson’s in 2019, Osbourne has delivered two studio albums. Some of the guitar solos are so overcooked the songs are charred beyond recognition, but a pummelling riff, such as on the opening bars of Parasite, magically banishes such misgivings. Decades before he became one of the world’s most abnormal reality television stars, Ozzy Osbourne was the undisputed Godfather of Metal.

Ozzy Osbourne – 'Patient Number 9' review: a fizzing piece of hard ... (NME.com)

Reports may have focused on his ill-health, but the Prince of Fucking Darkness sounds full of vim and vigour on album number 13.

‘Mr Darkness’, too, feels like a little bit of a dud, the muddy guitars that make up much of the rest of the record diluted into something watery and lacking impact on the verses. It’s the first time Iommi has appeared on one of Ozzy’s solo albums and he more than lives up to the momentousness of the occasion. But, for the most part, ‘Patient Number 9’ does just that – it’s a fizzing piece of hard-rock magic. ‘Patient Number 9’ is chock-full of big rock names such as [Pearl Jam](https://www.nme.com/artists/pearl-jam)’s Mike McCready, who appears on ‘Immortal’. The guitarist pops up on two songs – perhaps unsurprisingly, they’re two of the best cuts on this record. [‘Ordinary Man’](https://www.nme.com/reviews/ozzy-osbourne-ordinary-man-review-2612388)’s lead and goes big on the collaborations. It all turns out OK, though, the Brummie legend catching up with the protagonist the morning after: “Used up all his energy / He wakes up with a twinkle in his eye.” “The past is dead; the future’s haunted.” Life, it seems, is a lose-lose situation for the Prince of Fucking Darkness. It’s an exhilarating rattle through some of the sludgiest, most blistering riffs committed to record this year – and the Devil Osbourne so often cites seeps into his nature from time to time. “There’s a thousand different shades of darkness colouring our fate,” he declares on ‘A Thousand Shades’. [Ozzy Osbourne](https://www.nme.com/artists/ozzy-osbourne) is about to release his 13th solo studio album. “Open my eyes, my soul won’t survive.” But for every despondent moment, there’s a flash of resilience and stubbornness.

The debut album Ozzy Osbourne called “one of the greatest” of all time (Far Out Magazine)

One of the definitive titans of metal, Ozzy Osbourne loves a lot of music, but to him, one debut album ranks as "one of the greatest" of all time.

By the end of the decade, and with a host of insane escapades to his name, Osbourne was cemented as one of the all-time greats and one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most storied characters. [Rolling Stone](https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/ozzy-osbourne-my-10-favorite-metal-albums-197125/ac-dc-highway-to-hell-1979-197219/), he surprised us all and listed his ten favourite metal albums, which featured a variety of artists ranging from Alice in Chains to Pantera. However, this has not stopped him from being one of music’s resident sages, and his thoughts on the form are as treasured as any of his surviving contemporaries. Crowley’, and it confirmed to everyone that Osbourne and Rhoads had formed one of the most powerful creative partnerships of the era, making the guitarist’s untimely death in 1982 that little bit harder to bear. His work set a precedent for what was to come, with almost every of metal’s various subgenres owing a lot to Osbourne and the original Black Sabbath, bassist and lyricist Butler, guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward. [Ozzy Osbourne](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/tags/ozzy-osbourne/) is rightly one of the most beloved figures in rock; without him, life would be a lot less enjoyable.

When Ozzy Osbourne released his album Ordinary Man in 2020, it seemed like the perfect swan song – emotive, reflective, and almost elegiac in parts, ...

While perhaps not as emotionally loaded as Ordinary Man, Patient Number 9 better captures the mischievous, defiant energy of heavy metal’s original madman. Sidestepping anything remotely Sabbath (in fact, the most Sabbath-like track is the Wylde-led Evil Shuffle), Iommi instead brings a sense of heft and gravitas that sounds practically apocalyptic. Unsurprisingly, the Wylde songs are simultaneously among the most straight-ahead, classic-sounding Ozzy tracks on the album, while also showing that Wylde still brings a star power of his own. As it turns out, working with some of the most iconic guitarists on the planet has away of injecting flair into even the most reflective song; opener Patient Number 9 calls back to the same emotive, epic quality as Under The Graveyard or Today Is The End, but it’s not long before the guitar wizardry of Jeff Beck starts to shine through. The sheer vitality of tracks like Mr. But Ozzy has a terrible track record when it comes to retirement, and work on Patient Number 9 seemingly began as soon as Ordinary Man hit the shelves, with producer Andrew Watt once again overseeing the project.
