It's not just the mind-boggling athleticism or whistling winners, Carlos Alcaraz is connecting with every single crowd he plays in front of.
Tennis Majors breaks down the US Open quarter-final battle between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
I lost twice in the past two months, so I will have to be ready for this battle against Jannik.” And it’s likely to be long. [on grass in the fourth round at Wimbledon,](https://www.tennismajors.com/wimbledon-news/a-fitting-tribute-to-centre-court-sinner-and-alcaraz-clash-gives-fans-a-glimpse-into-wimbledons-future-610356.html) could be said to favour Sinner. Both men have been to quarter-finals before at Grand Slams but neither has made it through, so something has to give this time. The winner will be breaking uncharted territory – neither has been to a semi-final of a slam before – but it’s a match-up we’re likely to see many more times over the next few years. Having said all that, both men are chasing history, so it’s not like there’s nothing extra to play for.
Coming into the US Open, there appeared to be two players a head above the rest: Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal. Both are now out.
There are a lot of powerful players out there, and even a lot of speedy ones, and everyone is used to dealing with that kind of skillset. All bets are off if Alcaraz goes down; such is the strangeness of the 2022 US Open that he faces his toughest challenge to get there. And finally, he has some of the best hands in the world once he’s gotten there, and is at no disadvantage in the short game. Secondly, he has the quickness to get to the net in order to pick up the drop shot. I have a slight concern of whether Sinner’s elbow- and wrist-dominated forehand can keep from breaking down over long periods of assault from Alcaraz’s shoulder-heavy forehand (such as in a five-setter), and it may have been that very difficulty that forced Sinner to take five sets to remove Ilya Ivashka in Round 4 (the big Belorussian with a similarly-produced forehand to Alcaraz). And speaking of putting away balls at the net, Sinner is primed to neutralize Alcaraz’s favorite tactic. Even more to the point is the quality of the rivalry, and how it has already developed strangely. Both have leveled out at the moment, or more precisely have continued to grow but at a slower pace, but each still with the possibility of rising even higher. That is the first hurdle for Alcaraz, then, in the current match, having to beat the Italian on a surface that should favor the latter. But this time it was Alcaraz pinching a set, saving a match point at 5-4 and winning the final four games to force a decider. After breaking his opponent when he served for it at 6-5, Sinner won seven straight points to take the tie-break. This time it was Sinner who moved into an early lead, his flat hitting giving him the initiative, and he maintained his advantage until he came to serve for it at 5-4, when Alcaraz broke back. The Spaniard looked poised to take the set when he moved to 0-40 in Sinner’s next service game only for the Italian to produce some clutch serving when he needed it most. Sinner made a nervous start, double-faulting three times in his opening service game, and, although he quickly broke back, Alcaraz was hitting his shots with the greater conviction and deservedly took the first set. He could yet leave New York as the world No 1 but, in a tournament that appears to have finally signalled a real changing of the guard, this match was more than anything a demonstration that men’s tennis need not be scared of a future without its ageing superstars.

Carlos Alcaraz paired his athleticism and shotmaking to outlast Jannik Sinner in an instant US Open classic and fill several highlight reels.
Few sports in the world spend as much time obsessing over its relevance as tennis, with pundits and even players constantly debating whether certain players or events are “good for the game”, particularly as the ageing legends begin to depart. Alcaraz and the 21-year-old Sinner had spent four hours utterly destroying the ball, flitting from side to side and using every inch of the court. One time he slid into the splits while chasing down a ball, then fell, got up and calmly threaded a backhand down the line past Sinner. Both players chased after the ball at full sprint until the very end, and [the latest ever finish at the US Open](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/sep/08/carlos-alcaraz-jannik-sinner-match-late-finish-tennis-us-open). Not long after he somehow sweetly struck a behind-the-back shot, then slid into the forecourt and rolled a backhand passing-shot winner. For most of the first four sets, Sinner attacked without hesitation anytime the moment required it. In the face of Alcaraz’s total tennis, Sinner was competitive for just under four long sets. As Carlos Alcaraz sat down in the early hours of Thursday morning, time was running out and he knew it. Alcaraz’s movement alone is unlike anything else in the world right now and he soaked up so much of Sinner’s destructive power. In his short career, the 19-year-old has established a reputation for taking defeats with perspective and a smile on his face, but this time he had nothing. But he pairs his athleticism with his own brutal shotmaking and his extravagant all-court style.
The Spanish teenager's quarter-final ended at 2.50am on Thursday. Does the timetable at Flushing Meadows need to change?
Finally, for the night matches, the women used to always play first but that started to change several years ago so the burden of playing the second night match is spread out. Further, the US Open used to have the first-round spread out over three days and they smartly got rid of that practice. Of course, it’s an impossible task for the USTA to tailor the schedule in such a way as to make everyone happy. But that wouldn’t have been fair either since the women play their semi-finals on Thursday night without a day of rest. His five-set, nearly four-hour victory over former champion Marin Cilic was a fantastic match to witness for night owls and those brave fans at bars who earn the scorn of other sports fans by requesting the TV be switched on to the tennis. But for many millions of American tennis fans watching on the east coast – and west coast for that matter – the riveting conclusion came too late for their tired eyes.
