The Montreal Canadiens signed forward Kirby Dach to a four-year, $13.5 million contract on Wednesday. Louis to finish the season, but still wound up dead last in the NHL standings, two points worse than the Arizona Coyotes. After reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2021, the Canadiens started last season 8-30-7 before replacing head coach Dominique Ducharme with Martin St. The team posted a 14-19-4 record under St. Dach, who had nine goals and 26 points in 70 games last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, will carry a cap hit of $3.36M under the new deal. Drafted third overall by the Blackhawks at the 2019 NHL Draft, the 21-year-old was dealt to the Canadiens on July 7 in exchange for a first-round pick and a third-round pick in this year's draft.

But at some point, the Canadiens will have to turn the corner on their rebuild; Dach will need to improve by then, or risk being left behind by the rest of the talented young players in the system. Dach has all the things that make scouts drool but hasn’t been able to put it all together. The New York Rangers took on much less risk with their 2019 draft pick, though they are in a very different place in terms of a competitive window. Notably, Dach is signing away four years of RFA status but will not be an unrestricted free agent at the deal’s expiry. Those disappointing totals led to his jettison from the Chicago Blackhawks this summer, despite being young enough to potentially be part of their rebuild. Bassitt is coming off a win Thursday against the Dodgers, when he gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. In his only appearance against Pittsburgh on May 4, 2019, while he was with Oakland, Bassitt did not get a decision as he gave up three runs and five hits in five innings. Montreal is clearly betting that won’t be the case, signing up Dach to a relatively long-term deal in the hopes that he can unlock some of the potential that put him at the top of the draft. Although Knox did not top 400 yards in either of his first two seasons, Wednesday morning’s extension indicates the Bills believe the 6-foot-4 target will be able to sustain that level of play for a while. The Bills were mentioned as a Zach Ertz trade partner last year, but the team stuck with Knox, who will be locked in as Buffalo’s top tight end for the foreseeable future. I think Montreal might be trying to do some other things before getting Dach officially done.” The player comes in just under that, but it’s still a nice payday considering Dach has never surpassed 26 points in a single season and has spent much of his NHL career on the injured list.

Canadiens Sign Dach to Four-Year Extension (The Hockey News)

The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Kirby Dach to a four-year contract extension.

If Dach does come even close to the ceiling that some predicted he had as a prospect, this deal will end up looking like a steal. Dach is a work in progress, still. The potential is what is so tantalizing here, at the end of the day, as Dach has a tremendous skillset and is precisely the type of player to take a major leap after a strong offseason of training and some guidance from Canadiens coach Martin St.

There's no question it's much more of a wager for the Montreal Canadiens and Kent Hughes on Kirby Dach's potential than it is on the results the player ...

The Canadiens placed starting goaltender Carey Price in off-season long-term injury relief to clear the space necessary to get it signed and remain cap compliant. Hughes said he tried to make a trade before getting Dach signed but, without one materializing, opted to place Price on off-season LTIR to ensure Dach wasn’t coming to training camp facing lingering questions over his unsettled financial situation. “There’s no such thing as being 100 per-cent certain in this business, but we believe he’s got a lot of potential, and we believe in this environment—with our group, with our coach, with our development group and with the character of our locker room—that this is a better environment for Kirby Dach. And I spent most of the summer working on that. We’re going to create this process where he’s going to continue to grow. His inexperience at this level, how he was used by Blackhawks coaches, and a great deal of off- and on-ice turmoil within that market, were unquestionably factors as well. “Just about every trade that we’ve done, before we do it, we take the time to do our due diligence and understand the player as a player but also as an individual, and we’re comfortable with who Kirby Dach is as a human being first and foremost and what his potential is,” he said. (But) at the end of the day, it’s about winning Stanley Cups; not about making a lot of money. It was quite exciting for me to get an opportunity to come here and play, and I think it’ll fit into my game and my game fits into it and, come Sept. And in that environment, we’re comfortable that he’s going to achieve good things in the Montreal Canadiens organization. “So, I think the four-year deal really helped me out. He then flipped 13, along with Pick 66, to the Blackhawks to acquire Dach.
