One paper, which studied fatalities among skydivers in Norway between 1963 and 2008, found that 40 per cent of deaths could have been averted, were an AAD used in the jumps. All the gear is regularly maintained, MacNeill explained, and the reserve parachutes are packed by specially trained “parachute riggers.” For example, the Canadian Sport Parachute Association, which sets out minimum safety standards, says students must jump with an Automatic Activation Device, essentially a dead man’s switch that fires the parachute if the student fails to do so. Back in 2015, at GO Skydive, a skydiving operation outside of Gatineau, Que., two people were injured during a tandem skydive when the reserve parachute didn’t deploy properly. There were a handful of other identified causes, too, such as one death from a reserve chute not deploying, one drowning death and one collision with an aircraft. Dean, who was described as an “icon” in the skydiving community, left behind a wife and two children. While skydiving fatalities are a rarity, with the United States Parachute Association (USPA) estimating that there are 0.39 deaths per 100,000 jumps the sport is perceived as high risk. In social media posts, those who knew Pardazi, or followed her on social media, mourned the loss. She died in Innisfil, Ont., about 80 kilometres north of Toronto, after an emergency during her jump. Among them, “No one deserves the good or the bad because everything is a result of a chain reaction,” and “Don’t take yourself so seriously, nothing matters in the grand scheme anyway.” Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel” played in the background. National Post was unable to identify the speaker.
