Fuel leak disrupts NASA's 2nd attempt at Artemis launch (PBS NewsHour)

NASA's new moon rocket sprang another hazardous leak Saturday, as the launch team began fueling it for liftoff on a test flight that must go well before ...

The launch team planned to ignore the faulty sensor this time around and rely on other instruments to ensure each main engine was properly chilled. If not, the resulting damage could lead to an abrupt engine shutdown and aborted flight. On Monday, hydrogen fuel escaped from elsewhere in the rocket. People last walked on the moon 50 years ago. NASA wants to send the crew capsule atop the rocket around the moon, pushing it to the limit before astronauts get on the next flight. But minutes later, hydrogen fuel began leaking from the engine section at the bottom of the rocket.

NASA Scrubs Artemis I Rocket Launch For Second Time After Leak (Forbes)

Due to lift-off at 2:17 p.m. EST on September 3, 2022 from Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) suffered ...

high, the SLS is also a “Moon rocket” with 8.8 million pounds (3.9 million kg) of thrust. Orion will enter an elliptical orbit of the Moon that will see them get to within 62 miles above its surface and about 40,000 miles beyond it. The SLS is a largest rocket constructed since the agency’s Saturn V “Moon rocket” was last used in 1973. When Artemis I does finally lift-off it will embark on a 1.3 million miles (2.1 million kilometers) journey. That would mean a much longer delay. Due to lift-off at 2:17 p.m.

However, conflicts with other missions scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral could push the launch back to October. The launch team tried three times to troubleshoot the issue and start the LH2 flowing again, but each time the leak returned. The leak first cropped up as NASA began loading the liquid hydrogen propellant at around 7:15 a.m.

Fuel leak ruins NASA's 2nd shot at launching moon rocket (Terrace Standard)

The $4.1 billion test flight is the first step in NASA's Artemis program of renewed lunar exploration.

The launch team planned to ignore the faulty sensor this time around and rely on other instruments to ensure each main engine was properly chilled. During Monday’s launch attempt, hydrogen fuel escaped from elsewhere in the rocket. Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson and her team tried to plug Saturday’s leak the way they did the last time: stopping and restarting the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen in hopes of removing the gap around a seal in the supply line. Local authorities expected massive crowds because of the long Labor Day holiday weekend. People last walked on the moon 50 years ago. NASA wants to send the crew capsule atop the rocket around the moon, pushing it to the limit before astronauts get on the next flight.
