The world number one’s draw is now opening up, and there’s no reason to believe that she shouldn’t progress far into the tournament with the potential matches ahead of her. Stephens had previously won the 2017 US Open, and would have been hoping for another triumph on home turf, but she faced a considerable challenge in the form of the Polish player. From then on, Swiatek gradually moved towards the finish line, and although Stephens made her work for the games she needed, she was unable to mount a real fightback to prevent the two-time Grand Slam champion from winning the first set.

Swiatek takes out Davis, into fourth round of US Open (WTA Tennis)

At times Saturday, Iga Swiatek was out of rhythm against Lauren Davis, but the top-ranked player stepped up during the key moments to reach the fourth round ...

The last (and only other) time she faced a World No.1, she played a heroic match, losing to Simona Halep 15-13 in the third set at the 2018 Australian Open. Swiatek rose to the No.1 ranking back in April after Barty announced her retirement. A quarterfinalist at Wimbledon earlier in the summer, Niemeier stunned Zheng Qinwen 6-4, 7-6(5) to make the Round of 16 in her tournament debut. Davis came back in the second, taking the first three games. Davis saved three break points in the next game and eventually held. This equals Swiatek’s best result at the US Open, her 2021 run.

'I needed to find the proper balance' - Iga Swiatek digs deep to beat ... (Eurosport.com)

Iga Swiatek was, at times, far from her best but the 21-year-old was still too much for Lauren Davis as she sealed her place in the fourth round of the US ...

“Yeah, I'm just happy that they not showing it so much that they kind of envy. “Yeah, I took care of that and I just tried to take it point by point when I was losing 0-3. To which she responded: “Honestly I didn't even focus on that 'cause I still remember how it is to lose. Well, I got, like, positive feedback even from Alize Cornet when she won and ended that streak. I wasn't expecting maybe too much because of the losses, so that's good. It's not like the whole universe changed so right now I'm always going to be in quarter-finals or finals or whatever, win tournaments. Last year I remember when I was in Madrid I think, I just talk with Daria actually. The defeat to Alize Cornet at Wimbledon ended Swiatek’s 37-game winning streak. Sometimes I wasn't ready for it when she was changing that rhythm. But I'm happy I was fighting till the end.” I'm pretty happy I made it through and could close it in second set and come back. Yeah, that was pretty important for me.

I don’t think that’s legal…that is a little bit below the belt.
