Laxman Narasimhan was born in Pune and worked at PepsiCo and Mckinsey before he was selected to head Starbucks.
He also has an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania. Current Starbuck CEO Howard Schultz was quoted by The New York Times as saying in an interview, “We were looking for somebody that was a true servant leader that had a deep sense of humility… Building on companies’ histories, he has succeeded in rallying talent to deliver on future ambitions by driving consumer-centric and digital innovations”. In an interview with The Sunday Times in May this year, he said his childhood was “tough”, recalling the death of his older sister who passed away before he was born, and how his elder brother died at the age of eight due to kidney infections. As per a profile by The Telegraph, he left India for post-graduation in his early 20s, earning an MA in German and International Studies from The Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. Narasimhan has previously worked for PepsiCo and Mckinsey and was most recently the CEO of Reckitt Benckiser, an Anglo-Dutch company that primarily produces health and nutrition consumer goods.
Laxman Narasimhan will join Starbucks on October 1, to replace Howard Schultz who will remain as interim chief until April 2023.
He is a fellow of a think tank, the American non-profit Foreign Policy Association and Brookings Institution. After completing his engineering, he moved to The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania for MBA in finance. Narasimhan then got an offer from the beverages giant PepsiCo in 2012. The maker of Lysol, Dettol, and Durex brands said the 55-year-old was stepping down from the role to relocate to the US. He takes home just $1 as his salary. Schultz will remain interim chief until April, after which he will continue as a board member.
