"I got a little lucky with Scottie (Scheffler) not playing his best golf today, and I took advantage of that with my good play. McIlroy hit the pin with a chip from the back of the 16th green and poured in from eight feet to save par, which was enough for the solo lead when Scheffler did not get up and down from the sand, while Im recovered from a double-bogey at the 14th to birdie the 15th and 17th to get within one. A close-range birdie at the eighth was enough for Scheffler to edge back ahead until McIlroy rolled in from eight feet at the 12th to get to 20 under, with Im a shot off the pace after cancelling out a bogey at the eighth by picking up a shot at the par-three next and birdieing the 12th.

ATLANTA – Rory McIlroy pulled off an improbable comeback, rallying from six strokes back to knock off World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler with a final round ...

“It’s hard to watch this happen to a guy of this pedigree, this caliber. McIlroy coolly canned the par putt to stay 21 under and Scheffler missed from 9 feet. This was always going to be a hard day for him, a hard weekend, and he’s really feeling the heat now.” McIlroy made birdie one hole later to tie for the lead. Trying for his fifth win of the season, Scheffler struggled to three bogeys in his first six holes. “I feel sort of bad that I pipped him to the post. It’s only after the fact that it’s fun.” He got the Masters and I got this.” The Northern Irishman spotted Scheffler six strokes in the staggered-start scoring system implemented at the Tour Championship. He chipped away at Scheffler’s lead with another 67 on Friday and then made his move on Saturday. 1 Scottie Scheffler with a final-round 4-under 66 at East Lake Golf Club to win the Tour Championship. Rory McIlroy claims third FedEx Cup title with win at Tour ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Rory McIlroy held off a challenge from Scottie Scheffler to win the Tour Championship on Sunday, claiming his third FedEx Cup title in the process.

And it was McIlroy who joined Tiger Woods in leading a momentous player-only meeting last week that led to significant changes ahead for the tour. Most of that fell to Scheffler, who looked like different players when he returned Sunday morning and after a two-hour break before the final round. McIlroy won the FedEx Cup in 2016 in a playoff. And at the end, the tour's biggest voice had its biggest trophy. Scheffler badly misread a 10-foot birdie chance on the 17th to tie, sending the Tour Championship to the final hole with $18 million on the line. McIlroy holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole to tie for the lead. He won the FedEx Cup again in 2019, the first year of a staggered start. “I’ve had a really great year and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that.” Scheffler was hoping to cap off the best year in golf with the FedEx Cup title. The last one to do that was Dustin Johnson in 2017 at the HSBC Champions. 1 seed, who began with a two-shot lead and never trailed until the 70th hole. Rory McIlroy becomes the first three-time FedEx Cup winner in ... (Daily Mail)

Rory McIlroy is the first player ever to win the FedEx Cup three times after winning by a shot in Atlanta following a tantalising finale.

McIlroy had 11 PGA Tour wins to his name when trailing at the start of the final round. At the 18th, McIlroy saw out the victory. Starting the final round on 23-under, McIlroy and Xander Schauffele were Scheffler's closest challengers on 17-under. Yesterday's season finale concluded a noisy year in which golf was rocked by its rebellious breakaway league. It was particularly impressive given how he opened the week with a triple bogey amid an awkward start in Atlanta. Scheffler enjoyed a standout season and, though his Devon Loch-like collapse at East Lake will draw attention, McIlroy's revival deserves appreciation.

2022 Tour Championship leaderboard, winner: Rory McIlroy comes ... (CBSSports.com)

One could not discuss the future of the PGA Tour this season without Rory McIlroy's name being on their lips. On Sunday at the 2022 Tour Championship, ...

Beginning the week in the second position at 8 under, the Californian was a mainstay on the first page of the leaderboard despite some struggles on the greens. The self-belief king should only continue this trajectory heading into next year as he has added two victories, a top-five finish at the Tour Championship and (more than likely) an appearance for the United States in the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow -- the site of his first PGA Tour win -- to his playing résumé. One of only four players to not break par in the third round, Schauffele wasn't able to keep up with his playing competitor, Scheffler, and eventually the rest of the field. Playing his final 56 holes in 18 under, Homa was able to climb from the depths of the leaderboard and into a seven-figure paycheck. He had gotten within one stroke of the lead on multiple occasions, but it was a double bogey on the par-4 14th that ultimately took his name out of FedEx Cup contention. That was a spectacle out there today -- two of the best players in the world going head-to-head for the biggest prize on the PGA Tour -- and I hope everyone at home enjoyed that." The adopted son of Atlanta, Im was casually going about his business and tried his damnedest to recover from a major blunder on his back nine Sunday. While the bounces went the way of the 26-year-old at the year's first major championship (and for much of the year), on Sunday, the golf gods willed the man from Northern Ireland to victory, making amends for a season that featured four top-10 finishes in the major championships including a heartbreaker (in The Open Championship at St. With a win, Scheffler would have secured the richest season in the history of the PGA Tour and only the fifth five-win season of the last decade, joining Tiger Woods, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. Starting the week with a two-stroke lead, building it to as many as seven and beginning the final round with a six-stroke edge, Scheffler simply let the FedEx Cup slip through his fingers. However, it was the third-round back nine that he concluded early Sunday that made him a true contender as Rory birdied three of his last six holes to card a 63 and claim his spot alongside Scheffler in the final pairing as he put pressure on the 54-hole leader despite a six-stroke deficit. McIlroy later mentioned the "battle of Georgia" between the two titans of the game as Scheffler got the better of McIlroy at the 2022 Masters at Augusta National in April.

Marvelous McIlroy! Rory races past Scottie Scheffler to win Tour ... (Golf.com)

Rory McIlroy started the final round six shots behind Scottie Scheffler, but walks away with the $18 million first-place prize.

On Sunday evening, McIlroy surely had nothing to regret about the path he has chosen. McIlroy looked poised to take control on the long par-4 14th after a perfect, 346-yard drive, one of his many 330-yard bombs for the week, but blocked his second shot and short-sided himself. He seemed to like his approach, even twirling his club, but the ball sailed long into the gallery behind the green, leaving a difficult third shot from the trampled down rough with the green running away from him. However, Sunday afternoon, Scheffler looked far from the player who dominated much of the Spring and had earned a two-stroke advantage to start the tournament in the staggered-start format. But McIlroy found himself as one of LIV’s most outspoken critics and, along with Tiger Woods, led some of the player effort to make wholesale changes to the PGA Tour. He caught another break with the ball ricocheting back into to play. Just this week, McIlroy announced the creation of It’s got the best players. [Scottie Scheffler](https://golf.com/news/scottie-scheffler-hurt-awkward-spot-describes-it/) in the first seven holes to tie for the lead during Sunday’s Tour Championship final round, but had made bogey on 14 after a perfect tee shot. His approach came up short, coming to rest nestled in the Bermuda rough. But, you know, I went up against the best player in the world today and I took him down, and that’s got to mean something.” I got a little lucky with Scottie not playing his best golf today, and I took advantage of that with my good play.

Hitting first, Scheffler found a bunker short and right of the green. With one hole to play – and an $11.5 million difference between first and solo-second place – McIlroy maintained the slight edge. The prince of the PGA Tour won't EVER let LIV Golf lawyers live down the hackneyed way they described the FedEx Cup in court earlier this month.

McIlroy also got another dig in on LIV Golf during the presser when he noted that it wasn't until the 70th hole of the tournament that he actually was leading for the first time all week. All kidding aside, there was a point during his Tour Championship press conference where McIlroy started to express true frustration about the LIV situation. In turn, golf Twitter had a field day with what was characterized as an out-of-touch description of the postseason by the attorneys that also wasn’t convincing to the U.S. Well, in case you don’t remember, Robert Walters, a lawyer who represented LIV golfers Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones in their court hearing earlier this month seeking an injunction to gain access to the PGA Tour’s playoff events, had described the FedEx Cup as “the Super Bowl of golf" and the hardest trophy to win. How Rory McIlroy won a record third FedEx Cup at the Tour ... (Sporting News)

McIlroy put together a fantastic finish at the Tour Championship and made FedEx Cup history. The Sporting News digs into the numbers behind his victory.

It was the best round of the day and tied Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama for low round of the tournament. McIlroy's $18 million prize eclipses the entire purses of events such as the Masters, PGA Championship, Open Championship and U.S. And before his tournament even started, he was four strokes behind the leader, Scheffler, because of the Tour Championship's handicap scoring. McIlroy faced adversity at the start and end of this weekend's Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Indeed, none of the other golfers in the field even bogeyed both of their first two holes. McIlroy found himself six strokes behind Scheffler to start the fourth round.

Rory McIlroy takes home the biggest prize as PGA Tour's wild ... (The Washington Post)

The PGA Tour's rocky season amid the LIV Golf threat ended on a high note with McIlroy bringing home the $18 million prize.

I’ve had a really great year, and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that. I play to win tournaments, and I play to have fun and do my best and see where the game can take me. The fourth round began two hours after the third round ended, and the tilt began moments after the fourth round began. Then had come a break before the fourth round, so Scheffler and McIlroy and Jon Rahm and others had lunched together. But at the end of the day, it’s such a gift to be out here playing golf for money, and I can’t — I’m just so thankful to be out here.” With that said, the weekend could turn to the weekdays and the LIV plays — the presumed resumption of who might defect next to the exhibition-style series, which already had snared 10 of the current top 50, albeit zero of the top 10. I believe in the players on this tour. I believe in this tour, in particular. Soon McIlroy said to the bunched-in crowd: “I believe in the game of golf. Smith, 29, headlined that list, and he played through the 87-degree swelter here, finishing 20th of the 29 contestants. The golf stirred as McIlroy gobbled up a six-shot deficit to No. [the PGA Tour’s loudest voice all through the slog](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/08/10/rory-mcilroy-liv-golf-lawsuit/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10), and so he said: “It’s going to be hard for me to stomach going into Wentworth [in England] in a couple of weeks time and seeing 18 [LIV players at the DP World Tour’s flagship event].

In an unprecedented year in professional golf, Rory McIlroy has taken an even more unusual path. He has become the rarest of all titans, somebody who is just as ...

If he wasn't one of the 25 best golfers of all time, it's easy to see him commenting and bantering about all of this, just like you and I. McIlroy has clearly been the right man to meet this moment. This came to a head last week during the BMW Championship when a Player Advisory Council meeting (McIlroy is the president) was followed by aforementioned McIlroy- and Woods-led players-only meeting. TMRW could go anywhere and be successful, and the duo collectively could have cashed in with LIV Golf to the tune of somewhere around $1 billion. His partnership with Woods in TMRW Sports, an organization that will host simulated competitions in affiliation with the PGA Tour, stands to make both men a lot of money. It's in some ways fitting that I was able to get this done today to sort of round off a year that has been very, very challenging and different." Rory has been adamant, both publicly and privately in 2022, that LIV Golf is not good for the sport. On Sunday, perhaps the best player in the world defeated the same number of people on the course at East Lake Golf Club as he has off the course this year: all of them. He has become the rarest of all titans, somebody who is just as talented and influential behind the scenes as he is in front of the camera. Then he buried that 31-foot birdie putt, a nod to what has easily been the best putting year of his career. McIlroy's momentum halted immediately with a bogey at the first Sunday, but he plastered the field for the remainder of the day, playing the next 17 holes in 5 under. Some players move on to become coaches and others join the media as analysts, but there's a select few who move into roles as primary decision-makers of their leagues or the teams within.

"He played a really good round of golf. He played a great round of golf today and played good enough to win." I feel sort of bad that I pipped him to the post, but he's a hell of a competitor. 'I hate it. I really do': McIlroy opens up on golf's civil war after FedEx ... (The Guardian)

Rory McIlroy has morphed from superstar to statesman of late but at East Lake he showed he can still play a bit too.

“I’ve had to learn that the hard way over the years, too, but I’ve had a lot of experience, and this is my 15th year on Tour. It doesn’t make it that much easier to get over, but it’s great to end the season on a high note like this. I had a couple of wins, but I was just waiting for something. It makes you want to do it more.” “I really do. I really do. It’s got the deepest fields. It’s got the best players. McIlroy’s next stop will be at the DP World Tour’s PGA Championship, which begins on the West Course at Wentworth on Thursday week. As LIV prepared to announce its latest batch of recruits, including the Open champion, Cameron Smith, McIlroy became the first golfer to win a trio of FedEx Cups. As far as the PGA Tour is concerned, McIlroy is the perfect ambassador. “It’s the most competitive.

"I want to support [Luke Donald] as a captain. And it's a shame that it's come to this point." "But there's certain times where things just need to be done and you have to put yourself out there to stand up for what you believe in. "I don't like that, that's not something that I really want to be any part of, but for me, just as committed as I am to the PGA Tour, I want to make that commitment to the DP World Tour as well." "It's a hard one for me to stomach the fact that I go over to play an event and 18 of those guys are going to be playing in the same field," McIlroy said. "Being right in the middle of things has been tough at times and it's probably taken time away from the two things that are most important to me which are family and golf," McIlroy admitted of his role as unofficial spokesperson for the PGA Tour players.

Rory McIlroy, the Tour's biggest star, won its biggest event, the Tour Championship. In the fight against LIV Golf, he knows the symbolism.

On the 70th hole is a nice time to take the lead of a golf tournament. “I’ve had to learn that the hard way over the years, too, but I’ve had a lot of experience, and this is my 15th year on Tour. But just sort of the grain held it and it hit the pin, and it obviously ended up being closer than it would have. “I did want to ask you about that chip on 16, if you don’t mind,” the reporter asked. “With whatever way the green was, it was obviously very lucky to hit the pin, but I thought for — I was certain it was going to miss the hole on the left-hand side. before we go out to play, I can leave it there and go and just try to focus on the task at hand. From there, he parred, Scheffler bogeyed, and McIlroy was the leader for the first time. This week, McIlroy watched from the back of the room as Tour commissioner [Jay Monahan described a swath of changes](https://golf.com/news/pga-tour-structure-changes-10/), most of which were presumably birthed in the meeting. His victory drought in majors continues, and he won't win the PGA Tour player of the year award, but Rory McIlroy's omnipresence in 2022 has seemingly made ...

It's both a miracle and a relief that he came through in Atlanta; to have won only a Canadian Open and a CJ Cup in the fall, after a season like this, would be practically tragicomic. "It's going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing 18 of them there," McIlroy said, referring to LIV golfers who are currently in the field at next week’s BMW PGA Championship on the DP World Tour, in which Rory is also competing. And, of course, there was the coup de grace, his wrenching fall from the lead on Sunday at St. If you want to know about that stuff, you know who of the two players you have to ask." There was the hovering at the U.S. There was his surge on Sunday at Augusta, capped by the hole-out on 18 for a closing 64 to finish (albeit a distant) second. So thorough was his influence (and perhaps his control) that Jon Rahm, when asked about potential changes to the new format, laughed and said, "You're asking the wrong guy. Time and time again all year, the now 21-time tour winner has been vocal in his opposition to the Saudi-funded upstarts. The fact that there's an excuse to cut him a massive check at the final hour must seem like history and fate aligning on the side of cosmic justice. Now that Rory McIlroy has won the FedEx Cup and its $18 million prize, what stands out in the aftermath is his own Zelig-esque ubiquity in this strangest of years. Speaking of Scheffler, there was an interesting moment following a post-round interview at the year's first playoff event, in Memphis, earlier this month. On the course and off, no matter what story took prominence, McIlroy was there, the PGA Tour's universal soldier, turning up to win and lose in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.
