Can Coach Mike Babcock Find His Way Back In The NHL? (Detroit Hockey Now)

That question popped up Thursday when Babcock resigned as head men's hockey coach at the University of Saskatchewan. Babcock, 59, has an impressive NHL resume.

The NHL is deep in qualified head coaching candidates, particularly some younger rising stars. “I believe he will elevate the Huskies play and profile even further,” Babcock said. The volunteer coach took the Huskies to a 14-9 record. The Maple Leafs are still paying Babcock from the eight-season contract he signed in 2015. Ten teams changed head coaches this offseason and his name didn’t circulate much as a serious candidate. But he has been out of the NHL since the 2019-20 season when the Toronto Maple Leafs fired him after 23 games.

The longtime NHL coach steps down from his role with the Huskies after one season.

Babcock was infamously fired from the Leafs in 2019 after the team started below expectations following playoff disappointment in previous seasons, many citing Babcock’s unwillingness to adapt as a reason for their playoff losses. He also coached the Canadian Olympic team to gold medals in both 2010 and 2014, as well as to a World Cup victory in 2016. He is prepared to be a highly successful coach,” said Babcock in a statement.
