Lorie Kane won't hear any kind of talk about her legacy as she plays in the CP Women's Open one last time. Kane will tee off in the national women's golf ...

"It's just been so long since I was able to play in front of the hometown crowd. I never want it to be anything more than the best that I could be," said Kane, adding that the concept of "lift and climb" has been an influence in how she carried herself on and off the course. "Going into Monday I wasn't really knowing I would be here, but I did the best I could. Kane said that she had originally intended to retire from the tournament when it was scheduled for Vancouver's Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in 2020. "I think all of Canada just loves her dearly, so it is sad that this is her last one." The 57-year-old from Charlottetown insists that the sport's future in Canada has already arrived and that she had nothing to do with it.

CP Women's Open hopefully a boost to struggling Ottawa tourism (Toronto Star)

OTTAWA - Golf phenom Brooke Henderson may be what Ottawa's tourism industry needs to revitalize its flagging numbers.

She said anti-government convoy protests that put a stranglehold on Ottawa in February and March have also hurt tourism in the capital. Tourism Ottawa said that the event will have an expected economic impact of $13.4 million in the region. “The last few years have been really tough on everybody, so I think it’s amazing that the tour is back in Canada playing after such a long time,” said Henderson. Hotel occupancy was 41.9 per cent higher in July than in 2021 and 130 per cent higher than in 2020. A spokeswoman for the agency said that hotel occupancy in Ottawa was 120 per cent higher in June of this year than in 2021 and 235 per cent higher than in 2020. The event was set to be held at Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in 2020 and 2021, but was cancelled both years due to travel restrictions arising from the pandemic.

South Africa's Paula Reto has set a new course record at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. Reto's 9-under 62 round rocketed her up the leaderboard for a two-stroke ...

Henderson had a hot start, with three straight birdies to open her round to the delight of the large gallery that followed her around the course. As the winningest professional in Canadian golf history — regardless of gender — and a local hero, she drew fans wherever she went around her home course. Amateur Yeji Kwon of Port Coquitlam, B.C., shot a four-over 75. Hamilton's Alena Sharp and Maddie Szeryk of London, Ont., were the top Canadians, finishing the day tied for 16th at four-under 67. Amateurs Katie Cranston of Oakville, Ont., and Monet Chun of Richmond Hill, Ont., had six-over 77 rounds. It's so cool to have that much love and support," said a smiling Henderson. Reto set a blistering pace in her first nine holes with six birdies to start her day. "They're happy even when I bogeyed the last hole. "I just came in with no expectations, really," said Sharp. "It was unreal. A birdie on the par-five No. That topped Henderson's eight-under 63 in 2017 when the Canadian national women's championship was last held in Ottawa.

A Tale Of Emma Talley On Thursday At CP Womens Open | LPGA ... (LPGA)

Even though Charles Dickens wasn't a golfer, his words rang true on Thursday. It was, indeed, the best of times and the worst of times in “A Tale of Emma ...

Here’s to “A Tale of Emma Talley” hopefully ending on a high note. “It was definitely a crazy day,” she said. “But, turned it around and kept it going.” The next hole I made a hole-in-one and almost made a birdie on the next. The only cut she has made since the second week in June was at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational where she had a partner, Jodi Ewart Shadoff, and finished T32. The ace was “perfect shot” with “an easy 6-iron” from 172 yards on the 13th, Talley said. Other than that, Thursday represented only the second time Talley has posted a round in the sixties since the Shoprite LPGA Classic presented by Acer, way back on June 10. “Of course the Canadians are so nice here, as soon as I made the hole-in-one they just erupted. The other two girls made their putts (for birdie) and I made a hole-in-one. “It was a crazy day,” Tally said after posting a 6-under par 65 to take an early lead in the first round. “That's all I said, and then made a birdie. It was, indeed, the best of times and the worst of times in “A Tale of Emma Talley.” During the first round of the CP Women’s Open, the 28-year-old Kentuckian got off to the kind of lackluster start on which mediocre weeks are built – 11 straight pars, including three on Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club’s four par fives.
