SpaceX has launched another batch of Starlink satellites into Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) onboard a Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Starlink Group 4-27 mission.

Two more launches are on tap for the rest of August: one Starlink mission from Vandenberg and another Starlink launch from LC-39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. For this burn, the center engine (E9) ignites first, followed shortly after by two of the outer engines (E1 and E5). This mission deployed 53 Starlink satellites into shell four of its first generation constellation, bringing the total of these satellites launched into orbit to 3,108. This engine burned for about six minutes, and the second stage and Starlink satellites targeted a 232-by-336 km, 53.22-degree inclination deployment orbit. At T-3 seconds, the onboard computers commanded ignition of all nine Merlin 1D engines on the first stage, and these ramped up to full power in about 2.8 seconds. At around T-6 minutes, RP-1 load completes on the first stage, and a minute later, the tanks are pressurized ahead of strongback retraction. This avoids sudden vaporization of the oxygen at engine startup, which could lead to cavitation in the pumps and damage to the impeller blades. In a process normally known as “startup,” at T-1 minute, the ground computers hand off command of the automated countdown sequence to the rocket’s onboard computers. At this point, the ground systems are purged ahead of liftoff. Citing the cumulus cloud rule, surface electric field rule, and the lightning rule, the 45th gave the weather a 50% chance of being GO for launch. Four minutes later, the purge finished, and LOx load on the second stage began. The Starlink satellites separated from the Falcon 9’s upper stage after it released four retention rods that held the spacecraft to the rocket during launch. The Starlink launch from Florida is scheduled for next Saturday, Aug. SpaceX has two more Starlink missions scheduled before the end of August. The satellites will deploy their power-generating solar arrays and use ion engines to climb to an altitude of 335 miles (540 kilometers). The network has 2,313 satellites operational providing consumer broadband services, and the rest are maneuvering into the final orbital positions, according to McDowell. It was the 146th consecutive successful mission by a Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy rocket since the explosion of a Falcon 9 and the destruction of its commercial satellite payload during a pre-launch test in 2016. The Falcon 9 rocket headed northeast from Cape Canaveral after liftoff from pad 40. The Falcon 9’s reusable payload fairing also jettisoned during the second stage burn. SpaceX’s reusable first stage booster has landed on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Each of the 53 satellites weighed about 650 pounds (295 kilograms), and were flat-packed to fit inside the Falcon 9 rocket’s nose cone for liftoff Friday. The first stage for Friday’s launch is designated B1062 in SpaceX’s inventory. The booster’s first launch was on Nov.

SpaceX is set to launch 52 Starlink internet communication satellites to low-Earth orbit on the Starlink Group 4-27 mission.

The Falcon 9 second stage is the only expendable part of the Falcon 9. The final shell of Phase 1 of Starlink will host 172 satellites in another 97.6° 560 km low-Earth polar orbit. The second stage is capable of doing several burns, allowing the Falcon 9 to put payloads in several different orbits. The first orbital shell of Starlink satellites consists of 1,584 satellites in a 53.0° 550 km low-Earth orbit. SpaceX will put 20 satellites in each of the 36 planes in the third shell. The fourth shell will consist of 1,584 satellites in a 540 km 53.2° LEO. However, as the Falcon 9 first stage is able to propulsively land, three of the Merlin engines (E1, E5, and E9) contain TEA-TEB canisters to relight for the boost back, reentry, and landing burns. These satellites will significantly increase the coverage area, which will make the Starlink constellation cover around 94% of the globe. Due to this flat design, SpaceX is able to fit up to 60 Starlink satellites and the payload dispenser into the second stage, while still being able to recover the first stage. Currently, SpaceX plans to form a network of 11,716 satellites; however, in 2019 SpaceX filed an application with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) for permission to launch and operate an additional 30,000 satellites as part of phase 2 of Starlink. Starlink Group 4-27 marked the 55th operational Starlink mission, boosting the total number of Starlink satellites launched to 3,108, of which ~2,845 are still in orbit around the Earth. The first phase of the constellation consists of five orbital shells.
