Today, we remember the brave Canadians who took part in the Dieppe Raid, one of the most difficult and tragic days of the Second World War for our country.

Forced to retreat, the Allies returned to Britain after nine hours of intense fighting. “On August 19, 1942, nearly 5,000 Canadian soldiers, along with their British and American allies, approached the beaches of and around Dieppe, in occupied France.

Erin O'Toole: Remembering the Dieppe Raid 80 years later (National Post)

Remembrance is about honouring the sacrifice of our soldiers in both victory and defeat, and Dieppe was Canada's greatest military defeat.

Remembrance requires us to pass on the story of the sacrifice of our citizens who put the country above themselves. He fretted about the losses at Hong Kong and tried to justify the sacrifice by saying our soldiers had gained “precious days” for the colony ahead of the surrender. The Second World War, on the other hand, began with stinging and deeply tragic military defeats for the Canadian Army. By the end of the battle over 3,300 Canadian troops had been killed or wounded and almost 2,000 were taken prisoner by the Germans. While the soldiers of the Canadian Army were indeed first-class soldiers, in the end, they did not pull it off. Article content
