IIHF - 7 strange but true World Junior facts (IIHF)

If you're obsessed with hockey trivia, the World Juniors are a gold mine. In many respects, this is the most unpredictable of all top-level IIHF tournaments ...

In 2006, Phil Kessel (1+10=11) led the way with the fourth-place American squad in Vancouver. In 2009, his sister Amanda Kessel (6+13=19) topped the points derby as the U.S. Yet the player who got the eventual winner in the 6-1 gold medal romp over Russia in Grand Forks, North Dakota wasn’t a future superstar. In 1998, when Niklas Hagman got the 2-1 sudden-death winner against Russia, Hannu Kapanen, now a Finnish Hockey Hall of Famer (2005), was the team’s head coach. 2) Canada is the most successful nation in World Junior history with 18 gold medals, but surprisingly few of its bench bosses have used coaching at the tournament as a springboard to Stanley Cup triumphs. The IIHF first adopted the playoff format in 1996 when Boston hosted the World Juniors. However, if we apply the first Art Ross Trophy tiebreaker (“Player with the most goals”) to the World Juniors, then McDavid drops off the list, since Canadian teammate Sam Reinhart equalled McDavid’s 11 points in 2015 but scored five goals to McDavid’s three. Did you know that all three points recorded on the first goal ever scored in an IIHF World Junior gold medal game went to future Calgary Flames forwards? Canada leads the way with Wayne Gretzky (1978 WJC), Jarome Iginla (1996 WJC), and Connor McDavid (2015 WJC). 1) When Czechoslovakia hammered Austria 21-4 at the 1981 World Juniors in West Germany, it was the most goals ever scored by one team in a single game. The Czechoslovaks, coached by future IIHF Hall of Famer Jozef Golonka, actually got more goals in that game than the sixth-place U.S. did in the entire tournament (19).

IIHF - Camp in Korea is back (IIHF)

It took six years to bring the Hockey Together camp back to Korea. Last Tuesday the Korean organizers welcomed the return of the 2022 Hockey Together Camp.

And special thanks to Aku and our staff members for making this happen. Furthermore, the programs featured at the camp are a benchmark of the IIHF's development and education programs, specifically aimed at assisting ODA countries with geographical considerations. The Hockey Together camp aims to develop, share and further the education of these coaches by sharing each other's knowledge and experiences in a friendly and inclusive environment.

IIHF - Working the lines... and chalkboard (IIHF)

We take a lot of pride in trying to get everything right, be in the right spot at the right time to make the right call. When I worked that first tournament in Estonia, there was quite a bit of difference, little things you had to be aware of, but now it’s fairly aligned now, which is a good think, I think.” For now, Huseby has an off-day after lining the Finland-Germany quarter-finals game, hoping to make the cut for one of the semi-finals games. There are a lot of great officials out there, but I know there are those opportunities [like the Olympics] out there, and you never know what might happen.” But any time you get the opportunity to come to a tournament like this, I feel very fortunate. If making the NHL is the kind of thing you aspire to do, you really have to make a run at it. “I did [teachers’ college] two years in Red Deer and then two years in Edmonton, met my wife there and continued to ref all that time. But as everyone who knows junior hockey knows, that’s a serious level of play, and you don’t there by accident, and you don’t get there over night. The World Juniors, like any other IIHF tournament, is a chance for the best players in the world to test their talents and showcase their skills. The IIHF has an ever-changing pool of talent and many officials have “day jobs”. “I first started refereeing in Rocky when I was 12 or 13 while I was playing. That’s when I started to take it more seriously.”
