Anne Heche dead at 53 after week-long hospitalization from fiery car ... (USA TODAY)

Actress Anne Heche ("Another World," "Donnie Brasco") is dead at 53 after being pulled from a burning car. She was removed from life support Sunday.

In the late 1990s, she became one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, a constant on magazine covers and in big-budget films. She said she lost all of her property, including items of "profound sentimental value," in the fire. She also co-hosted the podcast “Better Together," described as a celebration of friendship. The person living in the home was identified to USA TODAY as Lynne Mischele by her attorney Shawn Holley. Michele was a long-time renter of the house, the lawyer said. DeGeneres tweeted her condolences Friday. "This is a sad day," she said. "She was warning me this is going to happen." The Los Angeles Fire Department said in a news release that the vehicle struck a two-story home, causing "structural compromise and erupting in heavy fire." Without identifying the driver at the time, Tony Im, a public information officer for the Los Angeles Police Department, confirmed to USA TODAY that a crash occurred at about 10:55 a.m. Aug. 5 and that the vehicle "became engulfed in flames." "Anne had a huge heart and touched everyone she met with her generous spirit," the statement said. TV news video showed a blue Mini Cooper Clubman, badly damaged and burned, being towed out of the home, with a woman sitting up on a stretcher and struggling as firefighters put her in an ambulance. I am grateful for their love, as I am for the support of my Dad, Coley, and my stepmom Alexi who continue to be my rock during this time. "Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy," the statement read.

She had another son during a relationship with actor James Tupper, her co-star on the TV series “Men In Trees.” In the final days of his life, Heche said, she learned he was secretly gay and that she believed his inability to live honestly fuelled his anger and hurtful behaviour. In a memoir released the following year, “Call Me Crazy,” Heche talked about her lifelong battles. Heche’s delicately elfin look belied her strength on screen. Around the same time, her personal life led to even greater fame, and both personal and professional upheaval. By the late 1990s Heche was one of the hottest actors in Hollywood, a constant on magazine covers and in big-budget films. A native of Ohio whose family moved around the country, Heche endured an abusive and tragic childhood, one that helped push her into acting as a way of escaping her own life. In the U.S., most organ transplants are done after such a determination.

Heche has appeared on several TV shows like Men In Trees and in theater productions like Twentieth Century, for which she was nominated for a Tony. Heche previously dated Ellen Degeneres, was married to Coleman Lafoon, and had a relationship with actor James Tupper. She is survived by her two sons, Homer Laffoon, 20, and Atlas Tupper, 13. On Thursday, the LAPD confirmed reports that Heche was driving the car and that it had obtained a search warrant for Heche’s blood, “which is common practice for this manner.” LAPD public information officer Annie Hernandez told Forbes Thursday blood test results from Heche showed “presence of a narcotic,” but more further testing was needed to “to rule out any substance that was administered at the hospital.” Heche started her career in soap operas and won a daytime Emmy for her work playing twins on Another World in 1991. Heche, who was best known for her roles in Donnie Brasco and Six Days, Seven Nights, was driving a Mini Cooper around 11 a.m. on August 5 when she crashed into a two-story home in Los Angeles, sparking a fire.

In the 2016 dark comedy “Catfight,” Ms. Heche and Sandra Oh portray quarrelsome rivals locked in a lifetime of dirty tricks and grudge settling. “I was raised to always tell everybody that everything was fine,” she said, “and even though I was in therapy for years, I never told anybody that I had another personality. “There’s nothing better than working five days a week and being in front of the camera every day.” In 2004, Ms. Heche played a supporting role in “Birth” alongside Nicole Kidman, about a woman who believes her dead husband is reincarnated as a 10-year-old boy. In her 2001 memoir, “Call Me Crazy,” she described creating alter egos, including one as a half sister of Jesus Christ named “Celestia,” as a way to deal with her inner demons. In August 2000, Ms. Heche wandered into the desert outside Fresno, Calif., reportedly wearing only a bra, shorts and sneakers, and ended up knocking on the door of a house. Ms. Heche, in a 2021 interview with the New York Post, said she felt like “patient zero in cancel culture.” DeGeneres’s “Ellen” was dropped after the show’s character — and the real DeGeneres — came out as gay. Ms. Heche and DeGeneres attended the 1997 premiere of “Volcano,” in which Ms. Heche played a scientist trying to save Los Angeles from lava after a volcanic eruption. Ms. Heche went on to marry cameraman Coleman “Coley” Laffoon in 2001. She often used her wispy and sprite-like look to contrast the sharp edges of her dramatic characters and as a comedic asset while taking quirky roles in rom-coms and other films. Advertisers fled, ratings slumped and DeGeneres went on to host “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” a long-running talk and variety program. Her death, at a hospital in Los Angeles, was confirmed by her publicist Holly Baird. Ms. Heche had been hospitalized after driving her vehicle into a house in the city’s Mar Vista neighborhood on Aug. 5.

We will install speed governors on all cars that automatically slow vehicles to non-lethal speeds when drivers speed through neighborhoods, whether they’re speeding because they are selfish, or drunk, or high, or in the midst of terrifying psychotic episode or a seizure, or for literally any other reason. If we have a clinically recognized mental illness, there is roughly a 50-percent chance that we will also struggle with addiction, and many of us will use those substances to self-medicate in the absence of more traditional care. We know nothing about why she drank or used drugs, or how often she did so, or how much she took, and making assumptions about any of these risks stigmatizing whole populations of people with mental illness and addiction who have never, and will never, harm another person, whether they are behind the wheel or not. And we will create safety by creating better systems of care, like simply running buses home from the bar, or installing substance detection technologies on new vehicles despite political opposition. We know nothing about her diagnoses or her treatment or lack thereof, and how these things did or didn’t impact her ability to drive — and it must be emphasized that the vast majority of people with mental illness can and do drive safely. We drive when we are under extreme stress, in profound grief, in states of debilitating distraction, and even in psychosis, which five to 10 percent of people will experience at some point in their lives. In huge, car-dependent swaths of America, driving is not optional, even for those who know they should not be behind the wheel. It is understandable, in some ways, why so many people have scrutinized Heche’s own behavior for answers — even if the conclusions they jumped to were deeply problematic. They point out that her brother also died in a car crash at 18, which Heche herself believed was a suicide. That neither Mishele, who was home at the time, nor her pets, nor any other passerby were seriously injured or killed is nothing short of miraculous. The only thing to do, some might suggest, is to prosecute the ones who survive to the fullest extent of the law, one by one, until there are none left. Suffice it to say, this was not the kind of multi-lane arterial where pedestrian deaths disproportionately occur.
