Teofimo Lopez Stops Pedro Campa On 140lb Debut - Celebrates In ... (Boxing Social)

A seventh-round stoppage was the result of a successful debut for Teofimo Lopez in the super lightweight division last night.

A minute and a half later the now stalking Lopez stepped in with an uppercut from either hand. Lopez seemed surprised at times that Campa marched on, eyes swollen, choosing to walk through the artillery that exploded in front of him. However, it began to look like a long night at the office when Campa was still standing after a difficult first few rounds. In the early stages Lopez was sharp, switched on and his jab lasered in on his Mexican target. At times Campa could not see what was coming at him which was the exact opposite for Lopez. After suffering his first career loss to George Kambosos Jr in November last year Lopez chose to leave behind the weight struggle at 135lbs for a healthier and more manageable 140.

“I don’t care who it is (I fight next), It could be Ryan Garcia, [Josh] Taylor, [Jack] Catterall, I don’t care, I want to be at the O2 Arena,” Lopez said. It has been said that UK fight fans are among the most passionate in the world, and that sure is a nice compliment. Right now, Taylor holds two of the four major belts at the weight (IBF and WBO) yet his future is somewhat unclear as he may move up to welterweight; while the Scot has recently been ordered to defend his IBF title against Jeremias Ponce. Regis Prograis and Jose Zepeda are set to fight for the vacant WBC belt, while the WBA belt is also vacant.

Lopez appeared to back off in the fourth and fifth a bit, perhaps logging rounds while preserving energy, but returned to an active role and landed several combinations in the sixth. But the loss to Kambosos in New York City on Nov. 27 was later overshadowed by the news he fought with a condition called pneumomediastinum and had extensive air in the retropharyngeal space, per a report by ESPN, something he didn’t learn about until after suffering his first-ever loss. On the attack, Lopez was much faster and crisper with his punches, landing 52% of his power punches, per CompuBox. Moments after putting Campa on the canvas at the start of the seventh, Lopez (17-1, 13 KOs) obliterated his outmatched opponent with a flurry of punches, prompting referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight at the 2:14 mark.

Teofimo Lopez wins comeback but Xander Zayas steals the show (World Boxing News)

Ex-world champion Teofimo Lopez won his comeback but was massively outshone by the 'best prospect in boxing' Xander Zayas.

The U.S. Olympic silver medalist passed the stiffest test of his young career, using a stiff jab and lateral movement to prevail in the battle of unbeatens. He faced a little adversity in the fourth round courtesy of a pair of Toney right hands, securing his fourth win of 2022. Montoya stunned Cortes against the ropes in the sixth round, but his success was fleeting, as Cortes buckled down in the seventh and eighth rounds to remain undefeated. Puerto Rican star Rosario picked up his fourth straight decision with a tougher-than-expected battle against Munoz, who entered the fight riding a four-fight winning streak. Lightweight: Charlie Sheehy (4-0, 3 KOs) UD 4 Juan Castaneda (2-1-2), Scores: 40-36 3x. Cortes landed 42 percent of his power shots and outlanded Montoya in all but one round. U.S. Olympian Isley did not blow away Toney, but he got some hard-earned rounds en route to a convincing points verdict. It’s a step closer to my goal of becoming a world champion. Then we’ll start working on the body. And that’s what we did in round four on.” I wasn’t trying to hit him low. “We want Josh Taylor. Yes, we want these guys.

Teofimo Lopez defeats Pedro Campa, wants a big fight next (Boxing News 24)

By Dan Ambrose: Former 135-lb champion Teofimo Lopez (17-1, 13 KOs) got back to his winning ways with a seventh round stoppage victory over Pedro Campa.

I see us there for about a year and a half or two years and get all the belts,” said Teofimo Sr. I knew what was wrong with him in that fight with [George Kambosos Jr]. In that fight, I knew it was the sickness that did that to him. You’ve got to entertain the crowd, and that’s when he started doing his thing. He was comfortable in there and he had fun. That would be a great fight, and it would be for a lot of money. To his credit, Campa got off the deck and fought well.

Fresh off a dominant performance in his junior welterweight debut,Teofimo Lopez is already setting his sights on the top of the division.

If he's successful and able to improve on the power that was somewhat lacking Saturday against Campa, his shot at glory at junior welterweight could come early next year. Mike Coppinger of ESPN noted it's unlikely Lopez gets to make a major statement with his next fight. I'm here to be their nightmare."

What's next for Teofimo Lopez? Ryan Garcia? Josh Taylor? (DAZN News US)

With Campa in his rearview mirror, Lopez has plenty of options for his next fight. He says he wants to return on Dec. 10. What route will the 25-year-old take?

I always said he has great talent and is a great fighter,” Barboza told ESPN after the Lopez fight concluded. Many thought Barboza would be the one to face Lopez in his 140-pound debut. “I always said that Teofimo Lopez is a great athlete. The focus for Garcia has been pursuing a bout against Gervonta Davis. Garcia dropped hints after he stopped Javier Fortuna in July that if a "Tank" fight could not be made, he'd be more than interested in facing Lopez next. Taylor has other obligations at this point, with a rematch against Jack Catterall at the forefront of Taylor's mind. After he finished Campa, De La Hoya and Top Rank officials were set to meet and discuss the possibility of being able to make it happen.

Good, bad, worse: Tyson Fury will fight again; Teofimo Lopez back ... (Boxing Junkie)

Teofimo Lopez seemed almost too giddy after he stopped Pedro Campa in seven rounds Saturday in Las Vegas. After all, Campa isn't in his class. Lopez's reaction ...

A main event on ESPN is supposed to be more than a showcase, which is what the Lopez-Campa fight was. I think fans have the right to expect a reasonably even pairing on such a big stage. This isn’t a tennis tournament, in which the higher seeds face inferior players in the early rounds. He’s definitely at the peak of his earning power, meaning a lot of money remains on the table for him to claim. It’s a way of staying in the news, of marketing oneself between fights. And he demonstrated that he could bring his punching power to the new division. He’s at or near the pinnacle of his unusual abilities at 34. And whatever was amiss in his head seems to have been sorted out. He wouldn’t be the first quit while on top. He was back to being what he had been pre-Kambosos, a dominating boxer. He’ll probably get a crack at one of those fighters or one like them. He lost his undisputed 135-pound championship and a great deal of respect by a split decision against underdog George Kambosos Jr. last November.
