Look: Buffalo Bills Punter Boots 82-Yard Punt (The Spun)

Buffalo Bills rookie punter Matt Araiza launched a massive, 82-yard punt during today's preseason contest.

Steve O'Neal's 1969 punt of 98 yards still holds the all-time NFL record. Former Bills punter Corey Bojorquez logged the longest punt of the year in the 2021 NFL season, achieving the same 82-yard mark. He led college football with a 51.2-yard average in 2021.

The leg strength he showed on that punt helped the Bills switch field position, limit what the Colts could do when they were on offense, and kept them out of scoring range. On the very first punt Araiza had in the NFL he showed off that leg strength with an incredible 82-yard punt. The former San Diego State University punter showed off incredible leg strength in college and earned the nickname ‘Punt God.’

Some of it was Keenum. Some of it was the supporting cast. Buffalo forced a three-and-out, to raucous preseason applause and Duke Johnson was the return man on the punt. The Colts held the ball for a couple minutes into the fourth quarter, but Daniel Joseph ended the drive with another sack. The Bills held up as the half was ending with a tackle for a loss and batted pass. Sam Ehlinger had a couple scrambles to keep the chains moving, but was also taken down for a major loss by Kingsley Jonathan and Andre Smith Jr., the latter of which will get the credit for the sack. Duke Johnson was the next returner and was highlighted on offense to start the drive. An incomplete to Tommy Sweeney burned time the Bills didn’t have and some sloppy penalties by both teams were followed by a Keenum sack to close the half. The blown coverage and a minor injury to Kaiir Elam led to a walk-in touchdown for the Colts. Elam was evaluated for a head injury, but cleared later in the game. Keenum rocketed a pass to Jamison Crowder, which caromed off Crowder and into the hands of the Colts for the first of several turnovers for Buffalo. This is also incidentally the first touchdown of the year, with Bernard having a 69-yard scoop and score. The Colts turned the ball over on downs with a drive that featured some sloppy penalties and a nice sack by Prince Emili. While the Colts recovered, a sack and forced fumble by Boogie Basham led to a Terrel Bernard recovery.

Colts vs. Bills - Game Recap - August 13, 2022 - ESPN (ESPN)

Get a recap of the Indianapolis Colts vs. Buffalo Bills football game.

Bills first-round draft pick, CB Kaiir Elam, got the better of Colts second-round draft pick, WR Alec Pierce, in forcing Indianapolis to go three-and-out on its opening possession. Reich is also mindful of how the Colts got off to a slow start in opening last season 1-4 under Wentz. "It was good to see us come together a little bit as a team and play better complementary football in the second half,” McDermott said. Tyler Bass made a 46-yard field goal as time expired as Buffalo scored on three consecutive possessions in the final 8:10 to rally from a 14-point deficit. With Von Miller and the rest of the Bills starting defense sitting out, Ryan finished 6 of 10 for 58 yards, with two of his incompletions coming on fourth down. And I think all of us, that entire group of new guys here is going to feel a lot better heading into next week.”

Top 3 things we learned from Bills vs. Colts | Preseason Week 1 (BuffaloBills.com)

Bills offense completes the comeback, Buffalo's defense shows out against Colts' starters + an 82-yard punt from rookie Matt Araiza.

"The first game holding, the game winner. "Matt Haack did a good job pinning them deep, and Araiza did a great job of flipping the field. On another drive, Benford got in the way of wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to break a pass up on a 4th and 4. The defense got off to a hot start in the first two quarters by forcing two turnovers and allowing the Colts to convert only 22% of their third downs. "Taking what they practiced to the game, which is good to see." Araiza kicked an 82-yard bomb that traveled 78 yards in the air for a net yardage of 62 for a touchback. Great to see him work himself back in a position to make those plays, and for him to make those plays and come through for us was outstanding." "Those guys were as excited as I've seen them in a regular season game in the same situation," McDermott shared. "I thought we did some good things and there's a lot of stuff to work on and get better at as well." "He gave us some juice," McDermott said of the rookie. It was Keenum's first game as a Bill, which was the same for many others on offense. The drive ended in a 48-yard field goal by Tyler Bass, which cut the Colts' lead to six.

Crowder even playing wasn’t a great sign as Isaiah McKenzie was rested along with the rest of the starting offense. The Bills won, but McDermott’s team was not disciplined. Blackshear was your feel-good story of the day. Buffalo linebacker Terrel Bernard scooped and scored on that one. He got the ball down for Tyler Bass on his game-winning kick. Both players also made big plays down the right sideline, including Hodgins’ diving grab near the goal line.

Bills 27, Colts 24 Notebook: Turnovers Galore, Rookies Shine in ... (Sports Illustrated)

Buffalo used its preseason opener to the fullest, providing some notable highlights paired with a handful of lows.

Third-string quarterback Matt Barkley then had a tipped pick of his own early in the fourth quarter that set Indianapolis up inside the red zone. Even on completed passes, he showed his first-round ability, as Colts quarterback Nick Foles fit the ball in the tiniest of windows against Elam's blanketed coverage for a minimal gain. Shakir got his busy day started right out of the gates in the first half. Covering primarily on the left side of the defensive formation, he remained tight against each of his assignments with some impressive hand-fighting and stride-for-stride speed. First-round cornerback Kaiir Elam had a first-quarter pass deflection that got most of the initial attention. But despite a plethora of turnovers and what seemed to be too-little-too-late offensive production, the Bills secured an preseason-opening win they prevailed 27-24 on Tyler Bass' game-winning field goal as time expired.

Araiza showed why he was well worth a draft pick.

Among his collegiate honors was a unanimous All-American nomination as well as the Ray Guy Award, both in 2021. As Buffalo opted to kick it away in the late stages of their first half with the Indianapolis Colts, Araiza showed why he was well worth the price of a sixth-round picking, launching an 82-yard blast into the Orchard Park sky. Araiza arrives in Buffalo armed with the nickname of "Punt God" after a prolific career with San Diego State. Upon his selection with the 180th overall pick of the draft, the former Aztec became the first punter chosen by the Bills since John Nies in 1990.

5 Buffalo Bills who stood out in preseason game against the Colts (BuffaloLowDown)

The Buffalo Bills are starting the 2022 season off with a win after they came back from 14 points down to win 27-24 over the Indianapolis Colts.

That impact may come as the team’s punt returner but by the end of the season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see his role in the offense grow. However, that question may be changing from where to how the coaching staff fits Shakir into this offense. Shakir also had two punt returns for four yards.

"The first game holding, the game winner. Although the punt was impressive, it arguably wasn't the biggest play of the night for Araiza and that's because he was the holder for Tyler Bass' game-winning field goal as time expired. "That was awesome," Araiza said. One of the biggest questions about Araiza heading into the draft was whether he could hold. Not only did he lead the nation in punting average with an FBS-record 51.4 yards per punt last season, but he also had six punts of at least 70 yards in 2021, which was the most in the country. "Being able to flip the field like that was huge," McDermott said of Araiza's 82-yard bomb.

Nearly all of the Colts' starters on offense played in the game outside of running back Jonathan Taylor. Benford and Elam both agreed that regardless of who they were lined up against, they were just excited to be out there competing with their teammates. "When we got out there, first play was a run play, got in there and hit somebody, then I kind of snapped into it and it's time to go," Shakir said. "I was just looking forward to whoever was out there," Elam said. And there's another issue: Unfortunately, Blackshear had to be helped off the field and subsequently left the game after his second touchdown. "Matt (Barkley) and I both like to look his (Shakir) way a lot," quarterback Case Keenum said. He was later listed as questionable with an ankle injury.

Revved Rookie: Bills' CB Kaiir Elam Impressive In Preseason Debut (Sports Illustrated)

Buffalo Bills' rookie cornerback Kaiir Elam showed both prowess and poise in his preseason debut against the Indianapolis Colts.

As a result, Elam may be poised to take the primary spot to start the season. Though he predominantly played press-man corner at Florida, the Bills have worked with him on his off-coverage assignments. Elam’s usage will be one of the more intriguing storylines to watch during the remainder of Buffalo’s preseason. Elam was taken to the blue medical tent for evaluation of a possible head injury. He demonstrated a readiness for the pro game since the moment he stepped on a football field for the Florida Gators. As a true freshman for the Gators, Elam started five games, intercepting three passes (four total passes-defensed) while making 11 tackles in 13 games. The 21-year-old has great length and plays with a physical and aggressive style, especially when challenged.
