WASHINGTON -- The Padres have played their entire season without Fernando Tatis Jr., eagerly awaiting the return of their superstar shortstop.

The 23-year-old had been sidelined since undergoing surgery to repair the scaphoid bone in his left wrist on March 16. The club had been expecting Tatis to make his season debut later this month, possibly as early as next week, after he began a rehab assignment on Aug. 6. "I have no excuse for my error, and I would never do anything to cheat or disrespect this game I love. "I have been informed by Major League Baseball that a test sample I submitted returned a positive result for Clostebol, a banned substance," Tatis said in a statement. There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be than on the field competing with my teammates. Any games the Padres play in the 2022 postseason will count toward the suspension, which would reduce the number of games he'll have to sit out next year. After initially appealing the suspension, I have realized that my mistake was the cause of this result, and for that reason I have decided to start serving my suspension immediately. Fernando Tatis Jr. Suspended 80 Games for PED Violation (The New York Times)

Tatis, a 23-year-old superstar, was on the verge of returning from off-season wrist surgery. He tested positive for Clostebol, a performance-enhancing drug.

He injured his wrist in a motorcycle accident in the off-season, and when it did not heal properly he had surgery during spring training. At the time, he was expected to be out for three months or more. For San Diego, the suspension is a huge blow to a team that made a splash at the trading deadline by acquiring several new players, including Juan Soto, a 23-year-old superstar outfielder. With the 80-game suspension, Tatis instantly becomes among the most prominent players to face a penalty during M.L.B.’s testing era. As the Padres have fewer than 80 games remaining this season, Tatis’s year is over before it started. I failed to do so.”

Tatis will miss the remainder of this season and the beginning of next after testing positive for Clostebol, a banned substance.

When Tatis has been healthy in the big leagues, he has been explosive. In hindsight, Soto and Josh Bell will replace much-needed production as the Padres try to make the long October run they and general manager A.J. Preller have sought for most of the past decade. He will be ineligible to play for the Padres should they make the postseason.

"There is nowhere else in the world I would rather be than on the field competing with my teammates," Tatis said. Tatis will forfeit $1,510,989 of his $5 million salary this year, covering the final 55 days and 48 games of the season. "I think we're hoping that from the offseason to now there would be some maturity. "I think to a man all the guys in that clubhouse believe we can win. The son of a former big leaguer, Tatis made his MLB debut in 2019 and quickly became a smash hit. He wasn't. Ultimately supportive of that and want to make sure he understands that," he said. At the end of the day, it's one thing to say. "It turns out that I inadvertently took a medication to treat ringworm that contained Clostebol," he said. He was set to soon rejoin the Padres to boost a lineup that recently added star outfielder Juan Soto. Preller said he found out about the suspension late Friday afternoon. It is also banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and Olympic gold medal winning cross-country skier Therese Johaug was suspended in 2016 after testing positive for it. Any postseason games the Padres play this year would count toward the 80 that Tatis must sit out.

And obviously with the news today, it's more of a pattern and something we've got to dig a little bit more into. The GM said he then contacted the commissioner’s office, learning that Tatis had indeed failed a drug test. And I think that’s going to be something that we’re gonna have plenty of conversation and time to talk to Fernando about, and that’s something that clearly, if we’re going to have a partnership and a real relationship, we’ve got to make sure that that’s strong.” All 10 were for performance-enhancing substances, while a total of 4,155 drug tests were conducted in the reporting period. San Diego general manager and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said it shouldn’t, that the Padres pursued the trade-deadline deals they made knowing that Tatis was attempting to come back from a significant injury. This was out of 8,436 total tests conducted in the reporting period.

What exactly is clostebol, the substance involved in Tatis suspension? (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

The banned substance can be an effective anabolic agent, but it also is found in some antibiotic creams.

The FDA does not allow U.S. products to include clostebol acetate, but it is listed as an active ingredient in creams sold in Europe and Central and South America. East Germany’s state-sponsored doping program in the 1960s and ’70s developed clostebol and combined it with another substance to create Oral Turinabol, the then-undetectable anabolic steroid that juiced its athletes, some of whom set world records that still haven’t been broken. Also known as 4-cholortestosterone, it is a synthetic derivative of the muscle-building steroid the body naturally produces in larger amounts in men than women.

The Padres in recent years committed $1.046 billion to sign or acquire Wil Myers, Eric Hosmer, Tatis, Machado, Soto, Hader and Musgrove. It is a spasm of spending unlike anything since the Diamondbacks tripled their payroll from 1998 to 2002. But make no mistake: Tatis is one of the five best players in the game who could have been a difference maker. This year the Padres added the bats of Soto, Bell and Brandon Drury, another trade deadline acquisition, to guard against another collapse. In one of the most stunning, highest-profile drug busts in baseball since penalties with suspensions began in 2005, Tatis tested positive for a banned substance, Clostebol, a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid—while on the Injured List and while playing under a $340 million, 14-year contract. The Padres had every star lined up—until a little Clostebol blew up their plans. The Padres were the whale at the poker table.
