The federal government has implemented a goal for all new light-duty vehicle sales to be zero-emission by 2035. And I think it's really important that we understand that we cannot be going forward with future mining developments if we are not having the consent of indigenous communities in order for that to happen. We do a lot of work on reconciliation in our union.

Canada already has federal incentives for electric vehicles, but Unifor is calling for increased incentives as well as a trade-in rebate program and increased spending on a charging network to boost demand. Unifor is calling for a national auto strategy, and a dedicated federal government ministry to lead it, to capture the significant potential offered by the transition to electric vehicles. Unifor also says it’s important to build up capacity for battery materials and electric vehicle components, and to provide transition support for auto parts suppliers and workers that could take a hit in the transition to electric vehicles.

Unifor has unveiled a 29-point plan to transform the Canadian auto sector and to turn Canada into a global leader in electric vehicle production.

“We know what’s needed, especially in the supply chain part of it.” Domestic semiconductor production – something that is in extreme short supply these days – is also on the wish list. “Efforts to coordinate a comprehensive and national industrial strategy across various federal ministries and agencies without a dedicated oversight body is both challenging and an inefficient use of government resources.

Unifor makes policy recommendations to rebuild Canada's auto sector (The Detroit News)

Canada's largest private sector union released a new policy document on Thursday with 29 recommendations to grow the country's auto sector.

“Adopting these recommendations is the best path forward for all levels of government to create the conditions for a strong, resilient and forward-looking auto industry that supports autoworkers." Trade is also a concern for the union since the country's automotive trade deficit rose to more than $37 billion in 2021, a record, according to Unifor's policy document. The plant is slated to build five new EVs. "I think it's really important that we're both going in the same year and gives us more power at the bargaining table." Unifor and UAW negotiations with the Detroit Three were previously held a year apart. "It's going to be very useful as we go towards the bargaining table," said Unifor President Lana Payne during a Thursday press conference announcing the report.

Canada also has its own incentives for electric vehicles, but Unifor is calling to boost those, as well as the introduction of a trade-in rebate program and increased spending on a charging network to boost demand. “North America is at least a decade, if not more, behind Europe and China in this space, and so, things like the cost, the number of models and makes.” For Canada, one of the most significant aspects of the bill is what’s not in it, as the U.S. has removed a provision that only vehicles manufactured in the U.S. would see the subsidies. Unifor’s auto policy, the fourth in two decades, outlines 29 recommendations including the importance of building up capacity for battery materials and electric vehicle components, and providing transition support for auto parts suppliers and workers that could take a hit in the transition to electric vehicles. TORONTO - Unifor is calling for a national auto strategy, and a dedicated federal government ministry to lead it, at a time of “significant and uncertain change” in the industry amid the transition to electric vehicles. “We have seen major investments, and they seem big because they’re from nothing essentially ... when we look at the investments being made to the net zero transition, it really is just a drop in the bucket of what’s needed.”
