Again, while this is somewhat standard, a game launching with bugs (surprise!) my own experience with Tower of Fantasy has been somewhat concerning. Today is launch day for Tower of Fantasy, the new MMORPG that aims to channel the gacha success of Genshin Impact into a new world and genre. They issued this statement alongside the launch of the game that talks about the game’s bugs and “shortcomings”:

But Tower of Fantasy's massive scale and shared world experience combined with the force of a thousand eager players probably makes bug stomping a monumental task. It's as if, for a brief moment, your character becomes a 2D model and then incorrectly retains some of that 2D nature once it's over. It promised to tackle the worst bugs as they happen and compensate players with in-game currency—which it has already started to do for its initial server instability. Repeat that several times and your character becomes thinner than a crêpe. My guess is that it's some form of animation bug for when the character leaps into the seat. The best glitch, found by Twitch streamer SivHD (opens in new tab), turns Tower of Fantasy into an entirely different genre. And now that more of them are squeezing in, they've found that the game wasn't fully prepared for them.

Tower of Fantasy has had a troubled launch, but playing the game pre-release, I was impressed with the overall lack of egregious glitches. Tower of Fantasy is not a poorly made game, nor is it devoid of any positive qualities. I get that, perhaps, the Heirs of Aida story and characters involved in the organization are being saved for later updates, but even Zeke's characterization is pretty minimal. I know some players will say that because Tower of Fantasy is an MMORPG, all these different features aren't meant to be experienced in a compressed span of time, which is fair. Many kudos should go to the developers for creating Tower of Fantasy, but let's take the combat as a case study. I can sum up my 30 or so hours with Tower of Fantasy with one succinct thought: There's a lot going on. That's the question I asked myself when solving Tower of Fantasy's overworld puzzles, jumping into ruins, analyzing the gacha pull system, reading the character upgrade pieces, looking at the weapon upgrade chips, playing a whack-a-mole-esque agility training course, trying to survive a timed combat challenge, opening the first type of treasure chest, the second type, the third type and--Oh my god, is this a fourth type?

Tower of Fantasy donne accès à un peu plus de récompenses, surtout au début de l’aventure. Le fait d’avoir des récompenses rien que pour la connexion est un plus, et en faisant les quêtes quotidiennes, on est assuré d’avoir droit à une invocation. La façon que l’on a d’arpenter le monde dans les deux jeux est plus ou moins similaire. Mais l’avantage, ce que ces primo-gemmes peuvent être dépensés sur la bannière temporaire, a contrario de Tower of Fantasy, qui donne des Nucléus de la bannière permanente. Le jeu met en place un système de Simulacres, qui permet de recréer le physique et la personnalité d’un combattant à travers des armes spécifiques. Pour résumer plus simplement, vous contrôlez uniquement votre avatar dans Tower of Fantasy, même certaines armes vous donnent accès à des apparences uniques. Genshin Impact n’est pas réputé pour être un jeu très généreux envers sa communauté, en témoigne l’affaire du premier anniversaire et son absence de cadeaux, qui a fortement énervé les fans de la première heure. Depuis son annonce, et surtout depuis que l’on a su qu’il arrivait en Occident, Tower of Fantasy n’a cessé d’être comparé à Genshin Impact. For starters, accounts registered within 180 days of launch (February 6/7, 2023 depending on time zones) will earn 10 Gold Nucleus and 500 Dark Crystals via the Milestones tab. The Gold Nucleus banner also has a hidden guaranteed SSR after 30 pulls — this isn’t shown in the menu, unlike the 80 pull pity. With limited banners usually having the newest rewards, it’s generally best to trade Dark Crystals for Red Nucleus. Red tokens will convert to Gold ones after a limited banner is over, so make sure to spend them before that happens. While the currency needed for pulls can be bought with real money, there are a number of launch events and rewards that will give early players a head start. Even with numerous examples of these same type of issues occurring repeatedly with each new highly anticipated launch, players continue to experience day one issues with alarming regularity. Tower of Fantasy has announced a compensation plan in a letter to players to apologize for issues with their servers during the games launch. Another 300 Dark crystals will be sent to compensate for players being unable to register or login to their accounts.

Just make sure that, if you want to use one of these, you choose the “correct gender” for the character (male or female) ahead of inputting the code. But given Tower of Fantasy‘s anime style, the character code-sharing has had a fun, if not predictable, side effect. Depending on your viewpoint, extensive character customization options are either one of the best or one of the absolute worst features of many RPGs. And Hotta Studio’s new-to-the-US MMORPG Tower of Fantasy has one of the most detailed character creators that I can think of, at least in a JRPG-like. It stands in stark contrast to its rival Genshin Impact, which has zero character customization.
