Toronto Hydro says it is looking into issues causing a major power outage impacting businesses and residents in the busy downtown Toronto corridor.

Shops at the Eaton Centre shuttered their doors amid the outage as people walked up and down out of service escalators, another video showed. Toronto City Hall abruptly went dark and was operating under emergency power. In a tweet Thursday Toronto Police said the cause of the outage was unknown and told residents to “Remember to treat intersections as a 4-way stop if traffic signal lights are out.”

Hydro One says it is investigating the issue and would provide more information once it is available. Toronto Hydro is also looking into the problem.

He said navigating the city’s streets was a bit “hairy” as several traffic lights are out in the downtown core. While subways are still running, the TTC said all streetcar service in the downtown core is impacted by the outage. “The (downed) wires are still live to the best of our knowledge and there is still an electrocution hazard,” he said, adding fire vehicles are stationed at both ends of the roadway to keep people away.
