Williams managed to hold serve on the next point, but Bencic did the same to take match point. Williams took the first point in the first set but quickly lost momentum as Bencic won the next three points. Maybe the best word to describe what I'm up to is evolution. But Bencic rattled off three straight points to take the advantage. "I have never liked the word retirement," Williams stated. Bencic won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Tennis legend Serena Williams lost 6-2, 6-4 to No. 12 seed Belinda Bencic in the second round of the National Bank Open in Toronto Wednesday.

Williams looked to be in her classic form early on, scoring the match's first point on an ace. The second set was more even, with Bencic and Williams tied 3-3, but the Swiss player won back-to-back games. Bencic, whose two wins over Williams in their five matches have both come at the National Bank Open, said she was still intimidated by the American who many consider the greatest tennis player of all time. I've always loved playing here," said Williams on the court after her loss. Knowing that the second-round match against the 12th-seeded Bencic might be Williams's last in Canada, fans came out in droves. "I wish I could have played better, but Belinda played so well today."
