I suspect the Rangers will go with two sets of alternates. It was certainly an incredible ride that ended with a trip to the Eastern Conference Final. Trouba is signed through the 2025-26 season with an AAV of $8 million. One of those alternate captains, Ryan Strome heaped a lot of praise on the hard-hitting defenseman for the team’s playoff success. There was a lot of talk prior to the 2021-22 season about naming a captain. His 177 shot blocks were tops on the team and his 207 hits led all Rangers defensemen.

How Jacob Trouba evolved to become the next NY Rangers' captain (The Journal News / Lohud.com)

Jacob Trouba may have been a surprise captain choice to some, but those in the New York Rangers' organization saw it coming.

"I definitely don't take it for granted to call this city home and build my life here," he said. "I basically told them I don't really want anything to change. We talked about it in the offseason and we just think that it was the right time. "Coming here with the contract and getting traded and all that, I was trying to be someone I wasn't," he said. "I’ve talked to all of them on the phone already," he said. I was a first-year coach," Gallant said. It’s something I wanted to do and felt I could do. I want to be a big part of this team and this is a way I can contribute." "It’s definitely something I've thought about for a long time – going back to being a kid," he admitted. I wanted to be approachable. "I think everyone sees the K’Andre (Miller) relationship and what he does with him because they're partners, but there's so many things that go into leadership that I don't see, that you guys don't get to see, that fans don't get to see that are behind the scenes – that I hear about that he doesn't even tell me about," team president and general manager Chris Drury said. Soon after it posted, I received a text from a person close to the situation.

Jacob Trouba was named captain of the New York Rangers on Tuesday.

"You've been a leader on the ice, you've been a leader off the ice and a leader in the community. "What I reiterated to them is that I don't want you guys to act any different or view me any differently," Trouba said. I intend on being the same person." "I think everyone sees the K'Andre relationship and what he does with him because they're partners, but there are so many things that go into leadership that I don't see, and you guys (the media) don't get to see and fans don't get to see. He wants the leadership group to remain tight and make decisions together, as it did last season. They're behind the scenes that I hear about and he doesn't even tell me about. And he is a good player." He had 27 points (seven goals, 20 assists) in 70 games in 2019-20, his first season with the Rangers, and 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) in 38 games in 2020-21. They instead went with six alternates because Gallant, who was entering his first season as their coach, said he needed to get to know the players before making such a significant decision. "Me and my wife laughed about that after because I didn't know what to say. "Which is pretty cool," Trouba said. The 28-year-old defenseman is New York's first captain in more than four years, since defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 26, 2018.

“From the outside, it seems that he has earned this honor on and off the ice. “You see that from players who are not ready for this position and don’t know themselves yet, let alone the people they are supposed to lead. It is an enhanced opportunity to contribute to another run at the Stanley Cup that has eluded the Rangers for going on 29 years. The reason all this happened is because I was myself and true to myself,” No. 8 said. The Rangers do not want to be in that position again. McDonagh has denied that the captaincy weighed on him through the nearly four years he served in that role as Ryan Callahan’s successor, but that is a lonely opinion.

2022 Report Card: Jacob Trouba (Blueshirt Banter)

It was certainly an interesting year for New York Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba. In 2021-22, Trouba fell one point shy of the 40-point milestone — despite ...

Ultimately, Trouba was effective in his role but he was not able to play up to his price tag and the expectations that come with it. It does not and should not surprise anyone that the best the Rangers (and Trouba) can hope for is for him to be the second-best right-handed defenseman on the team. Should they also be a little encouraged by the numbers he put up and his overall play in 2021-22? And, to be clear, the bad hits are there but so too are the clean hits that result in a change of possession. Trouba finished in the green in his Rel xGF% (0.86) but was well behind the Rangers’ top three defenders in that category, including K’Andre Miller (2.65), his most-frequent blueline partner. While some of these hits may be considered legal – and at times, effective at separating opponents from the puck – there’s a fine line between having an edge and playing a dangerous style that he teeters.
