The Toronto Blue Jays are signing outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith has learned, building further on the changes the club has ...

The 32-year-old Bradley is a .228 hitter with 107 homers and 434 RBIs in 1,098 Major League games. That marked Bradley Jr.'s second stint with the team, having originally been drafted by Boston with the No. 40 pick in the 2011 amateur draft. The club later confirmed it, announcing a one-year, major-league deal for Bradley Jr., who was released by the Boston Red Sox last Thursday, a move that came as the Red Sox looked to make room on their 40-man roster and provide more playing time for emerging outfielder Jaren Duran.

Bradley offers elite defense and a left-handed bat off the bench for the Blue Jays.

On Toronto's end, Bradley brings exceptional defense in right field (7 DRS), with the ability to play all three outfield spots. It appears he'll need to be DFA'd to open a spot for Bradley. Boston has retained his $17.5-million salary for 2022.

Zimmer, however, has been used primarily as a defensive replacement and pinch runner, hitting a meager .107/.212/.240 when in the lineup this year for a wRC+ of just 28. Ultimate Zone Rating has given him a 4.9 on the campaign so far after a 10.7 last year. Outs Above Average has given him three on the year already, after accruing four last year. Bradley has shown more promise with the bat in the past, putting up a batting line of .283/.364/.450 as recently as 2020, producing a wRC+ of 119 in the shortened season. Bradley, 32, was just released by the Red Sox last week and will now land with their division rivals in Toronto. The defensive specialist is having yet another down season at the plate, hitting .210/.257/.321 on the year. Peacock was claimed off waivers from the Royals in July and has thrown ten innings for the Jays this year with a 5.40 ERA.

Former Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. is staying in the AL East and signing with the Blue Jays.

Bradley signing with the Jays does not change much financially for the Red Sox, who are still on the hook for the vast majority of his salary for the rest of the year. The Red Sox will visit Toronto once more this season, from Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Bradley, as always, was an elite defender in his second stint with the Red Sox but struggled to do much at the plate. Red Sox manager Alex Cora wished Bradley well in Toronto. “It’s not a surprise,” Cora said. Bradley had been the team’s primary right fielder all season before being released.

Blue Jays sign outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. to Major League Deal (Jays Journal)

The Blue Jays added some depth to their outfield in the form of former Boston Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., who joins on an MLB deal.

Ultimately, it seemed like Zimmer’s days with the Jays were numbered but the club decided to carry an additional outfielder on the roster, potentially signalling that Springer could be out for longer than anticipated. The Blue Jays will now have five outfielders total on the roster, including Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Raimel Tapia, Teoscar Hernandez, and Bradley Zimmer with a sixth outfielder in George Springer currently on the IL with elbow inflammation. A former first-round pick of the Red Sox back in 2011, Bradley Jr. spent parts of eight seasons in Boston before signing with the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2020 offseason, a two-year deal worth $24 million. To make room for Bradley Jr. on the 40-man roster, right-hander Matt Peacock was designated for assignment and Otto Lopez was optioned back down to AAA, clearing a spot for JBJ on the active roster as well. The 2022 season has not been kind to Bradley Jr., as the lefty-batter owns a .210/.257/.321 slash line through 271 at-bats with a .578 OPS. He also has 22 extra-base hits on the year with 29 RBI and two stolen bases. Chris Costillo at MassLive.com and Zeke Telemco at WEEI reported that the Jays were close to signing Jackie Bradley Jr. to an MLB deal for the rest of the regular season.

Blue Jays sign JBJ to bolster outfield depth (MLB.com)

BALTIMORE -- The Blue Jays have added a familiar, longtime opponent to their outfield. The club on Tuesday signed free-agent center fielder Jackie Bradley ...

That Merrifield is a natural infielder should allow Toronto to play with an outfield-heavy bench in the short-term, allowing Bradley to join depth pieces Ramiel Tapia and Bradley Zimmer, in complementing starters Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Teoscar Hernández. But toward the end, there were a lot of ground balls to the pull side. Bradley is a career .228 hitter with 107 home runs in parts of 10 big league seasons, all with either the Red Sox or Brewers. He hit .210 with three homers and .578 OPS in 92 games for Boston this season. At this time of year, it’s always good to have as many options as you can.” “It’s another to add to the mix," interim manager John Schneider said. The Blue Jays are playing without All-Star center fielder George Springer, who has been on the injured list since Friday, nursing a sore right elbow. But his trademark defense remained consistent despite those offensive struggles, ranking 84th percentile in outs above average and 93rd percentile in outfielder jump, per BALTIMORE (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays signed veteran outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. to a one-year contract before Tuesday night's game at Baltimore.

Then he was traded to Boston in December and played a second stint with the Red Sox. “Every year is a challenging year.

Blue Jays: Why adding Jackie Bradley Jr. is a bit confusing (Jays Journal)

The Blue Jays announced that they've signed Jackie Bradley Jr. to join the big league roster, and I'm a little bit confused by the decision.

As for producing on the field, I’m not sure that Bradley Jr. will see many opportunities, but I guess you never know what could happen over the last 50-odd games left in the 2022 campaign. It would help if Bradley Jr. was still producing at the plate like he has earlier in his career, but unfortunately he doesn’t bring much to table in that department these days. 4- Hernandez (RF) The Blue Jays already have a player like that in Zimmer, and I would argue that there’s no upgrade in that department by bringing Bradley Jr. in. I suppose he could join Bradley Zimmer in the late innings to replace guys like Teoscar Hernandez and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on defence, but outside of that it’s hard to imagine much playing time for him. Maybe that’s what this is about, but I’m still a little confused about the move.
