Human remains found at drought-hit Lake Mead for 4th time since May (Axios)

It's the 4th time since May that human remains have been found at the nation's largest reservoir by volume.

The big picture: Lake Mead spans Nevada and Arizona and is part of the vast Colorado River basin that provides water for agriculture and human consumption to seven states, while also generating electricity at the massive Hoover Dam. Details: "National Park Service rangers received an emergency call reporting the discovery of human skeletal remains at Swim Beach in Lake Mead National Recreation Area," Nevada, on Saturday morning, according to an NPS statement. National Park Service rangers found more human remains at the drought-hit Lake Mead National Recreation Area to the east of Las Vegas over the weekend.

Fourth set of skeletal remains, as yet unidentified, discovered at Swim Beach in Nevada as lake hits lowest level in 80 years.

In May boaters spotted a barrel containing the remains of a man shot between the mid-1970s and the early 1980s that some speculated may have been a mob hit. The dry spell has dried out its tributaries, threatened key hydropower production and hurt tourism at what is a popular recreation site for many hundreds of miles. The fourth set of skeletal remains was found on Saturday at Swim Beach in Nevada, and are now being assessed by the local Clark county coroner.

Skeletal human remains were discovered on the edge of Lake Mead, marking the fourth discovery of its kind since May as the lake's water level drops.

Lake Mead, the nation's largest built reservoir surface, has dropped more than 170 feet since the reservoir was full in 1983 because of drought and heavy water usage by nearby states. Partial human remains were found in the Boulder Beach area July 25. On May 1, a barrel containing human remains that police said was probably dumped in the 1970s or 1980s was found near Hemenway Harbor, and more remains were discovered on the shoreline by paddleboarders a week later.

The skeletal remains are the second set to be found at Swim Beach and the fourth to be found at Lake Mead as water levels drop amid drought.

This is the fourth time since May that human remains have been discovered at Lake Mead, the nation’s largest reservoir, which has dropped to unprecedented lows amid a 22-year drought. Authorities provided no additional information about the discovery. Fourth set of human remains found at drought-stricken Lake Mead

Lake Mead: More human remains found in receding waters - CNN (CNN)

This is the fourth time human remains have been found at Lake Mead National Recreation Area since May.

But as the mega-drought persists, water levels have plunged this year to the lowest level since the reservoir was filled in the 1930s. Since then, Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse has preliminarily ruled the cause and manner of death a homicide by gunshot. The body had an obvious gunshot wound and investigators immediately treated it as a homicide investigation, Johansson previously told CNN.

Another clue linking the remains to his father came out Wednesday when the coroner aged the skeleton at between 23 and 28 at the time of death. Kolod was 3-years-old in 1958 when his father Daniel Kolod drowned in Callville Bay at age 22 while on a speed boat with a friend, the report said. More human remains have been discovered in Lake Mead – bringing the tally to four since May – as water levels hit record lows amid a severe drought, according to a report.

Authorities recovered skeletal human remains from the receding waters of Lake Mead over the weekend.

"Park rangers responded and set a perimeter to recover the remains with support from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's dive team," the National Park Service said. National Park Service rangers received an emergency call reporting the discovery of "human skeletal remains" at Swim Beach in the Leake Mead National Recreation Area at about 11:15 a.m. Saturday, the agency said in a statement. Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Human remains were recovered from the receding waters of Lake Mead for the fifth time this year, National Park Service officials said.

Human remains were found again at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the country's largest reservoir, officials announced.

A result of the diminishing water level is that bodies and human parts have been emerging. The minimum water surface level needed to generate power at the Hoover Dam is 1,050 feet, according to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Anything below that is considered an "inactive pool," and a "dead pool" exists when the water level hits 895 feet, according to the federal agency. Officials have said the reservoir's water levels are so low they could hit "dead pool" status, which means that the water is too low to flow downstream.

Such a status means that the water levels are so low that water can't flow downstream to power hydroelectric stations. Last week, the United Nations issued a warning that the water levels in Lake Mead and Lake Powell are at their lowest ever and are getting perilously close to reaching "dead pool status." On May 1, a barrel containing human remains was found near Hemenway Harbor. Police believe the remains were that of a man who died from a gunshot wound and the body was likely dumped in the mid-1970s to early 1980s.

More human remains found as parched Lake Mead gives up 4th body (Globalnews.ca)

Over a decade of near constant drought has depleted Lake Mead, a vital source of water for around 33 million people living in the U.S. southwest.

Demand for water from the depleted Lake Mead has only increased in recent years as its water level recedes. Police believe the victim was a man who died in the mid-1970s to early 1980s. When the first set of human remains was discovered on Mead’s parched shores, authorities warned that more bodies were likely to follow as water levels continued to recede — and they were right. Lake Mead is a manmade reservoir created by the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. Over a decade of near-constant drought due to human-caused climate change has depleted this vital source of water for the southwestern states of the U.S. The latest body is the fourth set of human remains to be found on the shore of Lake Mead since May, when a body with gunshot wounds was discovered stuffed in a barrel. More human remains have been found at Lake Mead as the waters of the drought-stricken reservoir recede even further.
