A mall in Vaughan, Ont. will be closed for the remainder of the day after a fire caused heavy smoke in the area.

The mall was evacuated and closed for a few hours while crews worked. Shoppers at a mall in Vaughan, Ont. were evacuated for a few hours after a fire caused heavy smoke in the area. Vaughan Fire says there were no injuries and crews were able to control the fire, which is believed to have been contained to a kitchen system inside the mall.

Promenade Shopping Centre has reopened after a fire forced the evacuation of the Thornhill mall earlier Thursday.

Police originally said it began inside a supermarket. Police say they were first called about the fire around 10:30 a.m. The entire mall was soon evacuated as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Vaughan fire told Global News crews arrived to find fire and heavy smoke on a rooftop in the north-east portion of the mall.

York police originally said the mall would be closed for the whole day but have since confirmed Promenade is now reopened. It is unknown if Congee Wong sustained any damage to the actual storefront. The mall has been evacuated and will be closed for the remainder of the day.

The force said the mall will remain closed for the rest of the day and are asking people to avoid the area due to the smoke.
