NFL hopes to reduce head injuries with 'goofy' helmet experiment (Sportsnet.ca)

The mushroom-like contraptions NFL players are wearing on their helmets during training camp may look strange, but they're a part of an ongoing safety ...

“If you’re waiting until the first game for that shock to happen, I think it’s ... I don’t know. “I like the way my helmet feels without it. We aren’t sure if this will be a net positive or a net negative.” “Obviously you only get one brain. It says that number climbs to at least 20% if both players involved in a collision are wearing them. I have been playing without it for this long, I just don’t like it.” “Anyone who’s played football before knows that the first time you take those (caps) off or you hit with your helmet, or you have a collision, there’s a shock,” Saleh said. Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who is a member of the competition committee, told his players in a video released by the NFL that he is “morally obligated” to keep them safe and believes they’re useful. “Adding size to the helmet does the same thing. Miller said mitigating those forces “will have a cumulative effect for the betterment of health and safety of the player.” “There’s a density of exposure, and a density of injury, at the beginning of training camp and the competition committee has been looking for ways to change that,” said Jeff Miller, executive vice president for NFL player health and safety. The league said laboratory research indicates the 12-ounce Guardian Caps result in at least a 10% reduction in severity of impact to a player's brain.

What is the NFL guardian cap and how does it work? (NBC Sports)

Fans attending NFL training camp see players wearing something unfamiliar on their helmets, the new guardian caps. See how they help player safety.

“There’s nothing more important than the health and safety of our players and their family, and not only immediate health, but the long-term health.” However, as research continues to emerge about the risks and impact of football, the league will likely face increased pressure to adopt more safety measures throughout the season. Over two decades later, Guardian Sports is finding a more palatable option for the NFL with the guardian cap. “I think it’s stupid, to be honest,” Campbell said. Fear not, the league has no intention of sending players outside Earth’s atmosphere. At just under $60, it is also a more affordable and accessible option to players and teams beyond the NFL.

Goodell taps ex-New Jersey attorney general for NFL's Deshaun ... (The Guardian)

Roger Goodell has handed off Deshaun Watson's discipline case to a lawyer with league connections and expertise in domestic violence and sexual assault.

The 26-year-old has continued to practice with the Browns, who are again in a wait-and-see mode after thinking they might only be without Watson for six games. Because of the way Cleveland structured his contract, Watson stood to forfeit only $345,000 under Robinson’s ruling. The former federal judge concluded that Watson violated the league’s policy by engaging in unwanted sexual contact with another person, endangering the safety and well-being of another person and undermining the league’s integrity. Goodell chose a designee to handle Watson’s case because he wanted an expert in the field who can focus solely on this matter, a person familiar with Harvey’s appointment told he Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because it’s an internal matter. “The NFL’s appeal addresses whether, based on the findings made by Judge Robinson, the discipline should be modified to include a professional evaluation and treatment as determined by medical experts, an appropriate fine, and a longer suspension,” the league said in a statement. Ray Rice. Rice was initially suspended for two games by the N.F.L. after his arrest on domestic violence charges in July 2014. Martavis Bryant. Bryant, a receiver, was suspended for at least one year for violating the league’s substance abuse policy in 2016. He was most recently suspended in January 2021 and reinstated in September 2021. He was also sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation. Darren Waller. In 2017, Waller, then a Baltimore tight end, was suspended for at least one year for violating the substance abuse policy. Before his suspension was complete, Henry was sentenced to three years in prison for financing a drug operation. He was reinstated in 2018. Jerrell Freeman. Freeman, a linebacker, was suspended twice for multiple games after positive tests for performance-enhancing drugs while with Chicago in 2016 and 2017. He was reinstated in 2014. The suspension lasted two seasons; Vick was reinstated before the 2009 season after serving an 18-month prison sentence. I was lucky to find an article by the New York Times that broke down 18 players who have been suspended longer than six games, and I was really impressed with their breakdown. Did you know that Michael Vick had the longest suspension in NFL history?

The Colts have a top prospective free agent on each of their lines with still some time ahead of the 2023 offseason.

Pass rushers are held at a premium in today’s passing league, and the Colts were pretty fortunate to have a found an elite one again by landing Ngakoue this offseason. He’s a ‘lead by example’ leader in their locker room and franchise cornerstone. Rest assured, Nelson will become the highest paid offensive guard in NFL history one way or the other (if not by the Colts ultimately, another NFL team)—but it could be a situation where the Colts elect for the franchise tag over inking him to a long-term mega-deal (if an extension isn’t already reached still yet this offseason)—should injuries arise again.

Deshaun Watson suspension news: Latest updates, timeline for ... (Sporting News AU)

The NFL has appealed Judge Sue L. Robinson's ruling of a six-game suspension for Watson and appointed a designee. Follow along as The Sporting News tracks ...

That would make it more likely that the judge in charge of the case would not provide a restraining order for Watson. That would potentially allow for Watson to play in Week 1 while the case is handled in the courts. 8:40 p.m. ET: Dan Graziano of ESPN reports that the NFL and Watson's legal team engaged in talks to suspend him 12 games and fine him upward of $8 million. By challenging her ruling, the NFL is saying there is no precedent for Watson's case, considering the scope of his sexual assault violations (as defined by the CBA). Moreover, Goodell or the arbiter's ruling will not be subject to appeal, meaning it will be final inasmuch the CBA is concerned. Should the arbiter tack on a significant number of games to Watson's suspension, it could set up a lengthy battle in federal court.

“What do the actions of the NFL say to little girls who have suffered at the hands of someone perceived to have power?” Solis said at Thursday’s news conference. Even so, Buzbee read a list of negative reactions that he said he had received from his clients to Watson’s six-game suspension. He said that 10 of his clients were made available to the league’s investigators. The NFL said in a statement that its appeal “addresses whether, based on the findings made by Judge Robinson, the discipline should be modified to include a professional evaluation and treatment as determined by medical experts, an appropriate fine, and a longer suspension. But, you know, even when you know you’re going to be slapped in the face, that slap still hurts and it still stings.” Robinson delivered her ruling Monday, calling Watson’s behavior “predatory” and “egregious” but citing disciplinary precedent for the six-game suspension.

Deshaun Watson nixed settlement offer from NFL that would have ... (CBSSports.com)

The Browns QB could have ended all his suspension drama if he would have accepted this offer from the NFL.

The fact that the NFL was willing to agree to a 12-game ban in a potential settlement -- instead of a one-year suspension -- isn't a coincidence. As for the appeal process, Watson's camp has until Friday to respond to the NFL's appeal. If the suspension is bumped up to 12 games, they might just go along with it and not file a lawsuit. Although the NFL wanted to see Watson suspended for a full year, the league was willing to trim that number down in a settlement. If there's no settlement and Watson's suspension ends up getting extended by the NFL, there's a very real chance that this case will end up in federal court. At this point, it feels like the best-case scenario for Watson is now a 12-game suspension.

Appealing Watson's suspension gives the NFL a chance to course ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The NFL's track record is bleak when it comes to handling sexual assault and domestic violence. In appealing Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension, ...

“This is the NFL responding to violent conduct after a public outcry. So, it seems the NFL is responding to yet another public outcry about Mr. Watson’s conduct.” Owners and teams are as much to blame for the NFL’s culture of indifference around sexual assault as the players. Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing the women who sued Watson, said Monday on ESPN’s First Take that “one of the first questions that was asked to one of my clients [during the NFL’s investigation] was, ‘What were you wearing in the massage session?’” There are no indications the NFL wants to believe victims or proactively protect women. In deciding to appeal the decision, the league has retaken responsibility. In a recent civil lawsuit, the Houston Texans were accused of enabling Watson’s behavior. According to the CBA, team owners are supposed to be held to higher standard than players. The NFL suggested an indefinite suspension for Watson, with a minimum term of a year, and an $8-million fine. But that shift didn’t erase the impact of the old system because Robinson is bound by those existing precedents. Robinson is in her role because the previous system was failing the league. In the 16-page report that accompanied her decision, Robinson says she found the NFL carried its burden to prove that Watson sexually assaulted four therapists.
