The smash Joker from 2019 will be followed by a musical (the original was squarely a dark and gritty drama). Margot Robbie has performed the part three times: in the 2016 film Suicide Squad, the 2020 film Birds of Prey, and the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. There have been rumours circulating for months that Lady Gaga was considering playing Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker sequel.

Lady Gaga Officially Confirms Joker 2 Role Via Musical Teaser (Game Rant)

Lady Gaga officially confirmed via Twitter her role opposite of Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming Joker sequel from Warner Bros.

Margot Robbie has recently been the figure attached to the character, having played Quinn in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and James Gunn's 2021 film The Suicide Squad. Gaga confirmed her casting through social media, posting a brief musical teaser that showcased Phoenix and her character dancing to an instrumental version of the notable jazz number "Cheek to Cheek." Joker: Folie à Deux will be a sequel to the 2019 film Joker, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the emblematic clown prince of crime.

Phoenix won the Oscar for his performance as did Hildur Guonadottir for original score. The teaser, however, does not outright confirm Gaga is playing Harley.

Margot Robbie and Jared Leto re-enacted the artwork in a deleted scene from Suicide Squad (opens in new tab), and it certainly seems like Folie à Deux is paying homage to it. 'Tango With Evil' is a famous work from artist Alex Ross that was originally the cover of the Batman: Harley Quinn comic book from 1999 (opens in new tab). It's an homage to the work of 1920s artist J.C Leyendecker, who often created art depicting men and women dancing. Or one who randomly breaks into song not unlike the Harley Quinn from Batman: The Animated Series (opens in new tab)? Now imagine the two of them together, both going full Method with a capital M, and you can picture the kind of performance they'll be able to pull from each other. And if you consider that Harley Quinn traditionally has a Brooklyn accent and that Lady Gaga is from New York ( and frequently proves she can already do what is basically a Harley impression (opens in new tab)), it's hard to see anyone else in the role. After months of rumors, Joker 2 – officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux – has its Harley Quinn in Lady Gaga, and director Todd Phillips could not have cast a better actor for the role.

The same week that DC cans 'Batgirl', Lady Gaga teases the sequel to Todd Phillip's Joker, titled Joker: Folie À Deux.

For them, Joker and The Batman represent their golden ticket within a midstream strategy overhaul: properties worth expanding in order to make DC films a more distinctive alternative to Disney’s Marvel. And if those musical rumours turn out to be true, then this new direction not only breaks the comic-book film template but could promise an ambitious and singular sequel worth watching. There are also strong rumours, potentially bolstered by the choice of song in the teaser, that Joker: Folie À Deux could be a musical or at least have strong musical elements to it. Adding to this Joker fatigue is the potential red flag of director Todd Phillips’ return. There’s also a singular joy in watching a film that bucks the persistent Hollywood trend of franchising a property and being content with telling a self-contained story. The pop icon, whose career on screen has skyrocketed ever since her Golden Globe winning turns in American Horror Story: Hotel and A Star Is Born, ended the speculation by posting the teaser.
