Vin Scully, legendary Dodgers broadcaster, dies at 94 (CBS sports.com)

Scully was the Dodgers' play-by-play man from 1950-2016 and worked for CBS Sports from 1975-82.

He loved baseball and the Dodgers. And he loved his family. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. "He was the voice of the Dodgers, and so much more. He loved people. Scully, who called various nationally-televised football and golf contests for CBS Sports from 1975 to 1982, started his broadcasting career in 1949 after attending Fordham University, where he studied journalism and was a student broadcaster. Or, as it came to be called, simply, The Catch:

Vin Scully, beloved sportscaster, dies at 94 (The Washington Post)

The former radio and television play-by-play voice of the Dodgers was widely considered the greatest announcer in baseball history.

“I don’t use the word ‘fans’ ever, because it’s short for fanatic,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 2016. He had two children from his first marriage, Kevin and Erin Scully, and a daughter from his second marriage, Catherine Scully-Luderer. A son from his first marriage, Michael Scully, died in a helicopter crash in 1994. In 2005, Bob Costas, the longtime NBC and HBO announcer, said of that call: “I’ve heard other announcers with great, great calls of home runs, great calls of exciting plays, but what Vin is really great at is all the moments of anticipation leading up to the big moment. But tonight, September the ninth, nineteen hundred and sixty-five, he made the toughest walk of his career, I’m sure, because through eight innings he has pitched a perfect game.” In 1974, when announcing Aaron’s 715th home run, which broke Babe Ruth’s all-time record, Mr. Scully captured the historic grandeur of the event: “What a marvelous moment for baseball. He has done it four straight years, and now he caps it: On his fourth no-hitter, he made it a perfect game.” No broadcaster spent longer with one franchise than his 67 seasons with the Dodgers, including 59 in Los Angeles. With NBC in the 1980s, he became a fixture of baseball’s Saturday Game of the Week, as well as on playoff and World Series telecasts. In 1955, Brookyn’s “Boys of Summer” won their only World Series title before the franchise moved to Los Angeles after the 1957 season. Mr. Scully’s career began in 1950 — which means he called baseball games for more than two-thirds of the sport’s entire broadcast history. In 1950, when he just 22, he was hired to join Red Barber and Connie Desmond on the Brooklyn Dodgers’ broadcast team. Mr. Scully continued to announce Dodger baseball through 2016, retiring on the season’s final day.

He said he realized time was the most precious thing in the world and that he wanted to use his time to spend with his loved ones. We mourn the passing of legendary @Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully. He was 94. The street leading to Dodger Stadium's main gate was named in his honour in 2016. He often said it was best to describe a big play quickly and then be quiet so fans could listen to the pandemonium. "A Black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol," Scully told listeners. "They were 70 or so odd rows away from the action," he said in 2016. He moved west with the Dodgers in 1958. In 1953, at age 25, Scully became the youngest person to broadcast a World Series game, a mark that still stands. With a snack of saltine crackers and a glass of milk nearby, the boy was transfixed by the crowd's roar that raised goosebumps. His mother moved the family to Brooklyn, where the red-haired, blue-eyed Scully grew up playing stickball in the streets. He loved baseball and the Dodgers. And he loved his family. Although he was paid by the Dodgers, Scully was unafraid to criticize a bad play or a manager's decision, or praise an opponent while spinning stories against a backdrop of routine plays and noteworthy achievements.

Memories of 1950s Vin Scully photos on my living room floor (Los Angeles Times)

Vin Scully's death triggers a vivid recollection of sorting through vintage Brooklyn Dodgers photos by Barney Stein for a book.

Whatever he was saying had the full attention of Hodges, who was crouching nearby, leaning on a bat. He’s gone but he won’t be forgotten as long as video and audio recordings of his warm, rich voice exist in some form for us and future generations to enjoy. For those of us who didn’t meet him until later, it was an intriguing peek back at a time before he became a grandfatherly storyteller and network star. In another photo, taken in 1957, he was broadcasting a game at Ebbets Field, looking toward the action through protective wire. Not every photo made it into “ Through a Blue Lens: The Brooklyn Dodger photographs of Barney Stein,” but every photo in the book is a gem. Maybe it was because of the clarity of the photos, which captured Scully’s essence so well, so lovingly.

He said he realized time was the most precious thing in the world and that he wanted to use his time to spend with his loved ones. After retiring in 2016, Scully made just a handful of appearances at Dodger Stadium and his sweet voice was heard narrating an occasional video played during games. The street leading to Dodger Stadium’s main gate was named in his honour in 2016. He often said it was best to describe a big play quickly and then be quiet so fans could listen to the pandemonium. He moved west with the Dodgers in 1958. In 1953, at age 25, Scully became the youngest person to broadcast a World Series game, a mark that still stands. With a snack of saltine crackers and a glass of milk nearby, the boy was transfixed by the crowd’s roar that raised goosebumps. He loved baseball and the Dodgers. And he loved his family. His mother moved the family to Brooklyn, where the red-haired, blue-eyed Scully grew up playing stickball in the streets. As the longest-tenured broadcaster with a single team in pro sports history, Scully saw it all and called it all. Although he was paid by the Dodgers, Scully was unafraid to criticize a bad play or a manager’s decision, or praise an opponent while spinning stories against a backdrop of routine plays and noteworthy achievements. Afterward, a Scully tribute was shown on the video board.

In 2016, after 67 seasons broadcasting Dodgers baseball, Scully retired at the age of 88. Decades later, long after the now-retired Howarth had become a fixture in the Blue Jays’ broadcast booth, he could only marvel at Scully’s staying power. Right away, Howarth found Scully to be uncommonly friendly and the two stayed in touch over the years. Over the course of the decades to come, he called thousands of games that would soon be forgotten and a select few destined for the history books. Years later, in 2016, he obtained the Presidential Medal of Freedom. What’s most remarkable about Scully is the way he endeared himself to generations of baseball fans not only in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, but across the sport.

Par ailleurs, le Dodger Stadium est situé sur l’avenue portant son nom à Los Angeles. Cet honneur lui avait été attribué à la suite de son illustre carrière.

At 22, I was the youngest and happiest fellow in the business. Scully was almost the only thing certifiably major league about the Dodgers that year. “That has given me the perspective that whatever I have can disappear in 30 seconds. Death is a constant companion in our religion.

Legendary Dodgers broadcaster Scully dies at 94 (TSN)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, whose dulcet tones provided the soundtrack of summer while entertaining and informing Dodgers fans ...

He said he realized time was the most precious thing in the world and that he wanted to use his time to spend with his loved ones. After retiring in 2016, Scully made just a handful of appearances at Dodger Stadium and his sweet voice was heard narrating an occasional video played during games. The street leading to Dodger Stadium’s main gate was named in his honor in 2016. Although he was paid by the Dodgers, Scully was unafraid to criticize a bad play or a manager’s decision, or praise an opponent while spinning stories against a backdrop of routine plays and noteworthy achievements. His mother moved the family to Brooklyn, where the red-haired, blue-eyed Scully grew up playing stickball in the streets. As the longest tenured broadcaster with a single team in pro sports history, Scully saw it all and called it all. “He was the best there ever was,” pitcher Clayton Kershaw said after the Dodgers' game in San Francisco. “Just such a special man. "I am proud that Vin was synonymous with baseball because he embodied the very best of our national pastime.”

Vin Scully, Voice Of The Dodgers For 67 Years, Saw Much Baseball ... (Forbes)

Vin Scully, who broadcast Dodgers baseball for 67 years, left a long legacy of iconic moments on the air.

That quartet was there in 1955, when the Brooklyn Dodgers won their only world championship, moving the normally-unflappable Scully to the brink of tears. After announcing the Aaron and Gibson home runs, Scully let the crowd reaction and the history of the moment sink in, keeping his thoughts to himself. “We have lost an icon,” said Stan Kasten, president and CEO of the Dodgers, in a team-issued statement after Scully’s passing. He was a protégé of Red Barber, who hired him in Brooklyn after listening to tapes of Scully’s Fordham games. Scully has a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame, which awarded him the 1982 Ford Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting. When he started, the average annual salary of an American worker was $2,876 and the average baseball player earned about $13,228.

Remembering Vin Scully, the longtime Los Angeles Dodgers ... (ESPN)

Vin Scully was so much more than just the longtime voice of the Dodgers. He was a national treasure for generations of sports fans.

"What a marvelous moment for baseball; what a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia; what a marvelous moment for the country and the world," he said. In his last season in the booth, Scully recited the iconic "People will come" monologue from "Field of Dreams" to mark the start of spring, reaching forward and back in time all at once. Scully liked to say that he wasn't broadcasting, he was having a conversation; he was talking to you. He also knew when to have fun, and seemed to truly enjoy the game. For all his gifts with language, the greatest baseball announcer who ever lived might have been the greatest baseball announcer who ever lived because he knew when to shut up, too. He loved to tell stories and reminisce with scouts and reporters who'd been on the beat a long time -- the one about the night he and Joe Garagiola had to lie down in the back seat of a car to sneak out of Tiger Stadium in the literally riotous minutes after Detroit had won the 1984 Series was a doozy. And he never seemed to understand what all the fuss was about. He was a witness to history, there in the demoralized Dodgers' clubhouse in the aftermath of Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World;" there on the air for Don Larsen's last perfect pitch in the '56 World Series; there shouting "Clark caught it!" He wore gold cufflinks, a gold watch and gold-rimmed glasses to the ballpark. He tended to stay clear of the field and the clubhouse -- Barber had told him once not to get too close to the players, and he never forgot it. L.A. was a football town then, but as Hall of Fame right fielder Duke Snider later remembered, Scully "educated" Angelenos on the game and made them care about the Dodgers, made them fans. AS A BOY, Vincent Edward Scully often lay on the floor in the front room of his family's Washington Heights fifth-floor walk-up, put his head on a pillow tucked under a tabletop radio and listened to Saturday morning football games.

Op-Ed: Vin Scully and the meaning of voice (Los Angeles Times)

A memorial outside Dodger Stadium for broadcaster Vin Scully on Wednesday morning. (Wesley Lapointe / Los Angeles Times). By D.J. Waldie.

I’ll remember summer evenings and the radio in the soft light. I read the Los Angeles Times every morning over a plate of two fried eggs and two strips of bacon, so I knew something about the team and their standing in the league. He talked about the weather, about the twilight gathering, about the history of the game, about nothing really that important. Jaime Jarrín has been the Spanish language voice of the team since 1959, creating a parallel Los Angeles out of balls and strikes and comments on the qualities of this place. The twinned cities of Los Angeles that Scully and Jarrín have made with their voices may seem like different cities, but their borders are unguarded. Scully’s voice comes from the radio on the dresser in a meter and in a tone that seem to belong to us.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will wear a uniform patch featuring a microphone and "Vin" in honor of legendary broadcaster Vin Scully, who died Tuesday at 94.

"He's been a part of my life since I was born,'' Walls said. The self-effacing Scully would have appreciated the tributes but would have likely found them to be "a little bit embarrassing,'' which was how he described the hoopla surrounding his retirement in 2016. "Having this opportunity to share this moment with the fans is really important. "It was like listening to your favorite song on the radio all the time, he was always in the background,'' said George Esteves, a 58-year-old from Sierra Madre.

Vin Scully, who called Los Angeles Dodgers baseball games for more than two-thirds of a century, died Tuesday at his home at the age of 94.

Scully joined the announcers’ team for the Dodgers in 1950, when he was just twenty-two. In 1972, his wife died of an accidental medical overdose, and in 1994 his adult son, Michael died in a helicopter crash. In 2016, Scully — a devotee of the Virgin Mary — created a two-CD audio recording of the rosary. He also earned a Personal Achievement Award from the Catholic Academy of Communication Professionals in 2016. A gifted orator and storyteller who was dubbed a “poet-philosopher of baseball,” Scully deftly narrated numerous momentous events in baseball during his 67 seasons as a broadcaster. Scully was famous for calling games alone — that is, without a color commentator — so the pictorial pope’s silence was apt.

Canucks' hall of fame broadcaster crossed paths with the late, legendary L.A. Dodgers' play-by-play man over the years.

“He talked about how Francis didn’t panic in his delivery and put the ball exactly where the catcher needed it to tag the guy out,” Robson said. It was again brief, but Robson said that Scully was “gracious.” Robson and Pratt went over to introduce themselves and Scully knew who Pratt was instantly. Robson came into the National Hockey League with the Canucks for their inaugural 1970-71 season, calling both radio and TV games. He told stories, but he never did it at the expense of missing out on what was going on in the game. Article content

Vin Scully, the LA Dodgers broadcaster who died on Tuesday at 94, leaves behind a towering legacy: gone is a paragon of joy in a world of anger and calm in ...

Everybody knew that Scully would shine under the brightest lights and highest drama, but he is missed because invited us to join him after our best day or our worst, in times of joy or in times of grief. What a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia. What a marvelous moment for the country and the world,” Scully said. When the cameras caught a toddler sucking her right thumb during a September 2016 broadcast, he recited Shel Silverstein’s ‘Thumbs’ before the first pitch of the inning. Maybe the most magical part of Scully’s personality and career was his exuberance for the fans who filled the stadium and tuned in to enjoy his broadcasts. You may know that Socrates died after drinking hemlock, but did you know that hemlock was a member of the parsley family? In a 1981 golf tournament, he invited viewers to “pull up a chair and take a look at the agony of a gentleman who is caught in the pot hole at 14” as golfer Rik Massengale attempts seven shots to escape a cavernous bunker. To the wartime generation, he was an old friend; to the baby boomers, he was a father figure; to the rest of us, he was a grandparent reading bedtime stories. His zest for storytelling only grew as he entered the twilight of his career that spanned seven decades. His languid narration complemented baseball’s methodical pace so viewers could learn about Hatshepsut, Alexander the Great and the history of beards, the conquests of seafaring pirates, or the time a player extracted two baby jackrabbits from the innards of a rattlesnake. A child of New York City, Scully was captivated by radio broadcasts of college football games and the roar of the crowd that crackled through AM radio. After announcing Hank Aaron’s home run to pass Babe Ruth as Major League Baseball’s all-time home run leader, Scully let 27 seconds pass, leaving viewers only with the visual of Aaron rounding the bases, the partying of a boisterous crowd and the thunder of celebratory fireworks. Scully, who died on Tuesday at the age of 94, was the Dodgers broadcaster for 67 seasons before retiring in 2016.

The Smaller Vin Scully Made Himself, the Larger He Became (Sports Illustrated)

The legendary broadcaster, who died Tuesday at age 94, had a self-effacing instinct that always failed. His humility is why everybody loved him.

A few days before he served as grand marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade in 2014, I congratulated him on the phone and he sighed and said: “This year at the front of the parade, next year at the back with a broom.” But even the sigh had a musical quality. The first half of that career included football—his final NFL game was the 1981-82 NFC championship game, Niners over Cowboys, when Joe Montana threw to Dwight Clark for The Catch, and Vin said: “It’s a madhouse at Candlestick.” That was his final football game—literally a mic drop moment—but he also did seven straight Masters on CBS, so that he could have had an entire glittering career if he’d never called a single baseball game. Somewhere, someone in the firmament is always being wished a very pleasant good evening, courtesy of Vin Scully—St. Vinny of Wherever You May Be. He was still living with his mother in Bogota, N.J., when he woke up one morning at age 25, ate the breakfast his mother prepared for him, threw it all up and then drove himself to Ebbets Field, paralyzed with nerves, to call his first World Series game in a voice already barrel-ripened for baseball. When he did speak, Scully said, “What a marvelous moment for the country and the world. The reason for all this: He wanted to be home with his wife, Sandi, and their grandkids. It was like watching Toscanini tune his own piano: “Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good evening to you …” So I would sit in the bleachers and I would cheer and I would watch and I just loved the Giants. Well, the point of the whole story is this: My first love was October the second, 1936, second game of the World Series. Today is October the second, 2016. But he also remained a courtly man from a courtlier age; Vincent Edward Scully, born in the Bronx and raised in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. From earliest childhood, he heard disembodied voices that called to him from his living room, beckoning from some baseball beyond. Scully had a self-effacing instinct that always failed, for the smaller he made himself, the larger he became. Years later—in keeping with the era; he always remained contemporary—he sent me an all-caps email of gratitude, a print version of his speaking voice: “I AM HIGHLY HONORED AND GREATLY HUMBLED BY YOUR MORE THAN GENEROUS REMARKS. ...” And because I was a member of the Police Athletic League, Catholic Youth Organization, I could get in a game free from Monday to Friday. We’d get out of school at 2:30, Giants games were at 3:15, and so I could go to the ballgame.

Vin Scully, a Voice for All Sports, Also Blessed Golf With His Distinct ... (Sports Illustrated)

Golf, like baseball, has a leisurely pace well-suited for a storyteller behind the mic. So, John Hawkins writes, it's no surprise that Vin Scully was ...

His grace with the spoken word and reflective nature as an observer made him a man for all seasons, a celebrated presence at any gathering where professional athletes were competing and somebody was keeping score. Jim Nantz’s limitless polish as a telecast host has allowed him to evade the wrath of media scribes over the years, and the same might be said of Mike Tirico, who doesn’t carry Nantz’s workload, but there aren’t many guys who earned such universal acclaim in another sport, then made an easy transition to talking about the little white ball. Scully could call any sport in any environment, although his style was best suited for the slow pace and acres of space provided by golf and baseball. Like the brilliant trumpeter Miles Davis, Scully turned dead air into a work of art. In television nowadays, those behind a microphone are strongly urged to avoid “dead air,” or a period of any length during which nobody is talking. No voice of legends past will rest in greater peace than Vincent Edward Scully, whose death earlier this week at age 94 etches a generational borderline between the good old days and tomorrow’s uncertainty.
