Ian Happ is one of the top outfield trade targets today. Where will he go?
Toronto tends to rest Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.in the DH spot when it’s not occupied by Alejandro Kirk. While the Jays don’t seem to have a ton of room for Happ, MLB’s Jon Morosinotes that his ability to cover center field while Springer deals with a modest elbow injury is key. The last time we checked in on Cubs outfielder Ian Happ, it was when ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed last Friday that the team is “likely to trade him.” Happ, 28 in August, has a 122 wRC+ on the season. - Last week,Robert Murray of Fansidednoted that Happ had been “connected” to the Padres and Blue Jays. The Padres are firmly in the Soto bidding, so Happ may serve as a backup plan for them as well.
Amid injury concerns for George Springer, the Toronto Blue Jays are seeking outfield help leading up to the trade deadline.
In addition to his positional versatility, Happ is having a strong season with the bat. The expectation has been Happ and Willson Contreras will be traded by the Cubs prior to Tuesday's 6 p.m. ET deadline. Springer sat out Toronto's win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday with an elbow injury.
The Toronto Blue Jays are eyeing Cubs stud Ian Happ as a reinforcement after George Springer's latest injury....
He’d be just another piece to the puzzle for this electric Blue Jays offense. As for Smyly, he’s a pretty reliable lefty starter and the Jays need that after the sub-par campaigns from Yusei Kikuchi and Jose Berrios, although the latter is starting to turn things around. The Blue Jays could benefit from any of these three players, but to be honest, it might make more sense to go after Robertson or Smyly. Both guys are experienced big leaguers and Toronto is in dire need of more arms.
The Blue Jays are reportedly interested in Happ for his outfield versatility with George Springer's recent elbow issues and possible shutdown.

It's been a minute since we've heard the Blue Jays and Ian Happ stuff, but it's back today, via Jon Morosi and George Springer's elbow.
Obviously. With team control through 2023, the Cubs aren’t any worse for the wear by not making a deal today. Feels like Nicholson-Smith is not bringing up Smyly out of nowhere, either. To reiterate on Happ: the Cubs do not have to trade him.
That may have intensified in light of George Springer's elbow injury, which kept him out of their Sunday game and is something he is “going to have to fight ...
Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet speculated that David Robertson or even Drew Smyly could make sense. In addition to the tweet quoted above, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi confirms the oft-repeated notion that the Cubs are believed to be pairing their hitters with relievers and mentioned the Jays are interested in Happ plus a bullpen arm. The Blue Jays have been scouting the Cubs heavily heading into the deadline and we’ve already heard reports of their interest in Ian Happ. That may have intensified in light of George Springer‘s elbow injury, which kept him out of their Sunday game and is something he is “going to have to fight through all year.” Happ is better served in left field, but has played center in the past and could work as part of a timeshare there if needed.
The Toronto Blue Jays saw a pair of their division-rivals in the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees make big trades on Monday.
Four-star tight end Ty Lockwood, Ohio State's first commit of the 2023 class, announced Tuesday that he is decommitting from the Buckeyes and is heading to Alabama. Lockwood, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior at Independence High School in Thompson's Station, Tenn., is the ninth-rated tight end in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The Los Angeles Angels traded outfielder Brandon Marsh to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday in a deal that is expected to send minor league catcher Logan O'Hoppe to the Angels organization, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. Marsh, 24, made his major league debut last July after being touted as one of the top prospects in baseball, and he played in center field in the place of Mike Trout due to injury. I promise that I will continue to give everything in these final 11 games to help get us back into the playoffs and compete for a championship." "To the fans, I want to thank you all for supporting a local boy from Addison. You have inspired me to work my hardest day in and day out. Given how miserable he was in New York and how poorly things were going, the trade to the Dodgers was best for all parties. He conducted an interview with NJ.com that was published on Tuesday. In the interview, Gallo expressed just how much his struggles and his negative treatment from Yankees fans weighed on him. The six-month investigation found that the Dolphins had impermissible contact with Brady in 2019-20 while he was with the New England Patriots, and again in 2021 during his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Those discussions are said to have focused on making Brady an ownership partner and possibly a football executive, and "at times" included the possibility of him playing for the Dolphins. Brady briefly retired earlier this offseason before announcing he'd return to the Buccaneers for the 2022 season. Giolito took a no-decision in his lone start against the Royals this season, scattering two runs and seven hits in five innings on May 18. When the Miami Marlins play host to the Cincinnati Reds again on Tuesday night, players on the two clubs finally will be able to take a breath with the trade deadline having passed. Keller pitched into the seventh inning for the 10th time in 18 starts this season, rebounding after allowing five runs in four innings of a July 22 loss to Tampa Bay, his first start following the All-Star break. Earlier on Tuesday, the Twins added All-Star closer Jorge López in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles. Cincinnati is currently 41-61 and fourth place in the NL Central. Minnesota is atop the AL Central with a one-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians but optioned starter Devin Smeltzer down to Triple-A in July. The team currently has four starters — Bailey Ober, Chris Paddack, Kenta Maeda and Randy Dobnak — on the 60-day injured list.
Ian Happ has frequented trade rumors over the last month, and the Toronto Blue Jays are the latest team linked to the Cubs All-Star.
He's under club control through 2023, an additional aspect to his value. Both Cubs All-Stars have been connected to the Padres, and The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported San Diego has explored the possibility of a blockbuster deal also including David Robertson. Blue Jays center fielder George Springer is dealing with an arm injury, and though he has not been placed on the injured list, he was out of Toronto's lineup for their last game on Sunday.
With hours until the trade deadline, Cubs outfielder Ian Happ can't be certain what his future holds.
I can’t thank the city enough for what it’s meant to me and being able to kind of grow up in my adult life there.” “You can see what's happening in the marketplace and you see potential landing spots and options and places. “The human element is so tough, when you put down roots, when you feel like some place is your home," Happ said. Happ has been a frequent subject of trade rumors in recent weeks with seemingly every contender linked to him on the rumor mill. Everything is out of your control.” It’s a crazy day; it always is.
The Chicago Cubs did not trade catcher Willson Contreras and outfielder Ian Happ before MLB's Tuesday evening deadline, a source confirmed to The Athletic.
Midseason trades allowed Rizzo, Bryant and Báez to reach free agency last year without the draft pick hanging over them. After mostly blocking it out for months, Contreras acknowledged that the constant hum of trade rumors finally became a real distraction in July, when his offensive performance (.489 OPS) plunged from the level that earned him a third All-Star selection this summer. Contreras also hugged teammates after Sunday night’s loss in San Francisco, thinking he had just played his final game in a Cubs uniform.
After months of speculation, the Cubs will pass the trade deadline without moving two of their biggest trade chips. · It hasn't exactly been a quiet deadline for ...
That means that essentially, other teams had to offer something that the Cubs preferred to that extra pick. Tampa Bay acquired Christian Bethancourt earlier in July, and now he’ll stand as the Rays’ only catcher trade of deadline season. Since that deal wasn’t reached, the old qualifying offer system will remain in place throughout the life of the current collective bargaining agreement, and thus the Cubs would get a compensatory draft pick back for Contreras if he rejected a QO and signed elsewhere. As for other suitors, it could be that the Mets, Padres, and the ever-popular “mystery teams” simply didn’t step forward with an offer that met the Cubs’ liking. If anything, it may have been a little surprising that Contreras wasn’t moved last year as well, except the idea that the Cubs wanted to keep the catcher and sign him to a contract extension also didn’t come to fruition. Since Happ is arbitration-controlled through the 2023 season, there may not have been quite the urgency on Chicago’s part to move the 27-year-old unless another team stepped forward with a knockout offer.
With the trade deadline coming and going, the Chicago Cubs have made a decision on both catcher Willson Contreras and outfielder Ian Happ.
He has been a focal point of this team for over half a decade and is their leader in the clubhouse. But it also doesn’t mean that a move for either of them couldn’t come sometime down the line. The Cubs elected to not move on from either player at the deadline.

Today, at the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline, it's what the Chicago Cubs did NOT do that is so jarring. Despite all the rumors, all the buildup, and – at least in one ...
It’s gonna take some time to regroup on this one, and figure out where the Cubs want to go, where Contreras wants to go, and where it makes sense from a fan perspective to want them to go together. I’m not trying to make a value judgment on that decision – maybe they are among the organizations that now feel like Contreras is more DH than catcher – I’m just trying to point out that if the Cubs do in fact feel this way, it was all the more inexcusable not to trade him today. And maybe a one-year deal at $18 million or so sounds like a fine move for the Cubs, but I’m not convinced the Cubs want to extend this relationship at all. This is not what I expected, and trying to sort through it in words while I’m on hour 36 of the Blogathon is not easy. More unfortunate for Contreras, it means the Cubs will likely make him a Qualifying Offer after the season, which will tie him to draft pick compensation. Today, at the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline, it’s what the Chicago Cubs did NOT do that is so jarring.
Few teams were under more of a spotlight than the Chicago Cubs as Tuesday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline approached. After all, the rebuilding Cubs are nowhere.
He could be a major piece of the team for years to come and may even command a smaller salary to re-sign than Contreras eventually will. Contreras was as well, and any sentimental connections didn't figure to play much of a factor because they hadn't in those previous decisions. He could leave for another club this offseason and may no longer even be in his prime when the Cubs contend again if they re-sign him.
Happ, a 2015 first-round pick who's spent his entire career with the Cubs since debuting in 2017, reacted to the news by channeling Jordan Belfort from "The ...
LaVine, who was a free agent this summer, also channeled that scene when he re-signed with the Bulls last month. He posted a video on Instagram with his head photoshopped on DiCaprio's character. Click here to follow the Cubs Talk Podcast.
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ shared a funny GIF in response to surprisingly not getting traded by the Cubs prior to the deadline.
Entering Tuesday, Happ was hitting .279 with nine home runs, 46 RBI and a .360 OBP in 99 games. The Cubs may have been in no rush to move Happ given that the 27-year-old will not be a free agent until after the 2023 season. Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ was surprisingly not traded before Tuesday’s MLB deadline, and he appears to be more than happy to stick around.

Contrary to what many believed, the Cubs have decided to keep both players instead of trading them at Tuesday's deadline.
What does it mean for the Chicago Cubs' rebuild after the team decided not to flip All-Star outfielder Ian Happ at the trade deadline?
Still, for now, Ian Happ will stay a Chicago Cub during his career year and I could not be happier about it. With Happ remaining a Cub for the near future, what does this mean for the rebuild? He played very well in the shortened 2020 season, even receiving one MVP vote that year.
