Now I’m in the zone a lot longer, giving me a better chance to make contact and get hits.” The third baseman, who opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the second inning — his 20th long ball of the campaign — and added a single in the fourth, has certainly been the straw stirring the drink for Toronto of late. “So then I finally acknowledged them a couple of days ago.” That would have been his brace of goners on Thursday. “And they loved it. Of course, who might go where before 6 p.m. Tuesday has been a topic of intrigue in the clubhouse. “We’re going to have some fun tonight,” the righty predicted Sunday. “To feel human. Enjoy the off-day tomorrow and then get ready for Tampa.” That’s not the look you want on the mound.” “I wasn’t mad,” Berríos said of the Báez home run, his 10th on the season. There were no rumour whispers surrounding the Jays on Sunday, as the team finished off a homestand before heading out on a nine-game road swing through Tampa, Minneapolis and Baltimore, with a day off Monday. I want to beat him, but at the same time I don’t want to pitch around him. In fact, the Jays have won each of Berríos’s last 13 home starts, passing Roy Halladay for the longest streak in franchise history. “It’s like in the family.

The Guardians started the game with Bryan Shaw, normally a reliever, in the "opener" role. (The Angels have reportedly been considering trade offers on Ohtani but a deal still seems unlikely to come together.) Despite having the superstar tandem of Trout and Ohtani in recent years, the Angels haven’t had a winning record since 2015 and haven’t made the postseason since 2014. Though he won’t be able to make a huge impact in terms of the standings, returning before the end of this season would surely be an encouraging sign for the Angels and their fans. Allmendinger collapsed and hung over the edge along the track after getting out of his car. Allmendinger’s cool suit wasn’t working, and he also ran out of water in his bottle late in the race. Robinson reportedly told both the NFL and NFLPA that her decision about the discipline will come on Monday. Ahead of the anticipated announcement, the NFLPA issued a statement. According to a report from CBS' Jonathan Jones on Sunday, a ruling on punishment for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is expected to be handed down by retired judge Sue L. Robinson on Monday. In light of this news, the NFLPA and Watson released a joint statement on Sunday night, vowing not to appeal the decision from judge Robinson while asking the NFL to do the same. Cavan Biggio walked with one out in the bottom of the fifth and took second on Hill's error on a pickoff attempt. The NFL is reportedly in favor of an indefinite suspension for Watson. Watson has been accused of sexual misconduct and assault surrounding visits to a number of massage therapists. A winning road trip and a losing road trip comes down to just a couple plays in this game." Minnesota, which was swept in a two-game midweek series at Milwaukee, dropped two of three to the Padres and managed just four hits in Sunday's loss. In June and July, Robinson heard arguments from Watson, the NFL and the NFL Players Association. The NFLPA and Watson's legal team reportedly intend to challenge the punishment in federal court if he's suspended for a year or longer.

His brother-in-law, Javier Baez, was the only visitor to hurt Berrios in the series finale. "He was landing his curveball," Schneider said. Berrios (8-4) enjoyed his best month as a Blue Jay, checking in with three wins and three no-decisions in six starts. I'm a little bit smarter now [with his approach at the plate]." Since the [all-star] break, he's been on fire." Chapman drilled a two-run, two-out homer in the second inning to spark Toronto's offence.

That was the fourth of the game for the Tigers and the second for the Tigers’ shortstop. Jordan Romano took over to close it out for the Jays, and he had an easy time of it. The Tigers now head to Minnesota with Tarik Skubal scheduled to start on Monday night. With this one looking like an unlikely candidate for a comeback, Hinch turned to Angel De Jesus in the bottom of the eighth. The shot sailed over the wall for his 10th home run of the year, and it was 2-1 Jays. Miguel Cabrera and Harold Castro lined out, and Candelario grounded out to complete the Tigers' half of the inning. Bichette followed suit, smoking a double up the left-center field gap for a double of his own to score Guerrero. Hernandez flew out to end the inning, but it was now 4-1 Jays. Gurriel and Chapman followed with singles, but Tapia grounded out to end the inning. In dire need of some offense, A.J. Hinch sent Eric Haase out to lead off in the eighth inning, replacing Tucker Barnhart. Haase battled lefty Tim Mayza through an eight-pitch plate appearance but lined out to left. Garrett Hill gave the Tigers the innings they needed but continues to struggle to get any whiffs at all. Jose Berrios got the start for the Blue Jays and he was strong in the first inning. Javier Báez led off the fourth, and this time he got a sinker down the middle and drilled it to right field instead. Hill was up to the task, however.

Partner Content | Blue Jays betting trends: Matt Chapman is red hot (Toronto Star)

The Toronto Blue Jays enter their Civic Holiday rest day coming off a strong 10-2 stretch with some loose vibes appearing to permeate the clubhouse ea...

While it’s impossible to predict exactly what Toronto will do at the deadline, it seems fair to presume they’ll make a more significant investment in run prevention than offence. That could have a significant effect on the team’s run-scoring environment, especially when pitchers who don’t tend to go deep — like Ross Stripling and Yusei Kikuchi — are starting. So far he has 12 runs and 7 RBI since the swap, although that’s a small sample — and we tend to like him best on total bases props anyway. The lack of extra-base thump is more concerning considering the power outage he suffered in April. In his last five outings, the under has hit four times, and he’s a single out on July 26 away from five consecutive quality starts. That’s a heck of a hot streak, but it’s worth noting that Chapman has been raking for an extended stretch now with the best wRC+ on the Blue Jays since June 1 (168). Because of Chapman’s high walk and strikeout rates he needs to produce at an elite rate when he makes contact to consistently hit on total bases props, but he’s been doing just that lately. He also produced just five extra-base hits in 23 games. So far the results have been promising. From either a fan or bettor’s perspective, Berrios’ 2022 season has been an emotional rollercoaster.
