Bjarnason only Manitoban to wear the Maple Leaf at the Hlinka ... (PortageOnline.com)

Carson Bjarnason is following suit with some of the best to ever do as he is set to grace the ice for Team Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

However, he still tried out for the Wheat Kings as a walk-on and ultimately beat out two drafted prospects for the opportunity to be a backup in Brandon at 16-years-old. I could have stopped my journey or kept going, and I decided to put in the work and follow through. "It's amazing to be among them and to play with this specific group. To be a part of that is unreal," Bjarnason explains. The Carberry product was the only Manitoban selected to the top 40 camp and is now one of the three goalies on the roster for the event. Bjarnason believes playing against the best in his age group at this tournament will really help him prepare for that opportunity.

The Czechs need good goaltending to have a successful Hlinka and if so, I think Hrabal will be right in the MVP conversation.” — Simurka I think he could suprise alot of people and be named to the all star team in this tournament.” — Karle Yager is highly-skilled and a great goal scorer so look for him winning the goal scoring race as well.” — Karle “It may be a cop out not to pick one name but I think the top four on Canada’s defence core could all shoot up draft charts and surprise people with a strong tournament. He can also score goals from anywhere in the offensive zone and I will not be surprised if he will lead Czech Republic to medal round as one of the Hlinka’s top scorer.” — Simurka In another year without a clear-cut top goaltending prospect, I think Hrabal could put his name right at the top of the list with a strong Hlinka.” — Mazloum Dominik Badinka will not be draft eligible until 2024 and I do not feel like he is a known name yet. Whitelaw will be a standout in multiple ways, I think he’s going to produce a ton but he’s also going to make dazzling moves that just resonate with people even after this event is over.” — Broad “I don’t know if it’s a surprise to people who know but I think William Whitelaw will be a standout. If his best he can be a play-driving two-way force and I’m looking forward to see how his intensity ramps up against the best of his peer group.” — Mazloum It’s important to not make snap judgements on international events, but I think Musty can heavily benefit from a strong showing.” — Broad I expect him to be a driving force behind USA’s offensive attack at this event.” — Broad

Hlinka Gretzky Cup 3 Stars: Allen, Whitelaw, Gauthier Standout on ... (The Hockey News)

The Hlinka Gretzky Cup kicked off with a handful of standout performances. Tony Ferrari zeroes in on three notable players from Day 1.

With so much of the Swiss squad focused down low because they were on the power play, Gauthier was able to put himself in a strong scoring positon before finishing the Benson pass from low to high, changing the eye level of the netminder quickly. Scoring again at the end of the game off the rush with a shot that just trickled by the German netminder, Whitelaw capped off a stellar opening night at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup and ensured everyone following the tournament knew his name. Allen's passing ability was such an asset for the Canadians. He was precise and cerebral with his passes on the breakout, hitting teammates in stride and allowing the Canadians to attack in waves with speed. He used his hips to establish body position several times when racing to loose pucks, bumping a German player to the ice with a quick hip turn several times. Early in the game, the 5-foot-11 defender used his mobility and play reading ability to cut the Swiss attackers off at the blueline. The Canadian captain was in the thick of the play from start to finish.
