Matt Chapman heating up at the right time for the Blue Jays (Jays Journal)

The Blue Jays have a deep and dangerous lineup, and when Matt Chapman is producing as he's capable it really lengthens the attack.

He started off pretty slow here in 2022, but these days he’s been one of bats that has been carrying the load. Blue Jays fans remember all too well how a player like Randal Grichuk would always tease us at the start of each season, and then unfortunately would regress as the year when on. 439 439 439 51 51 In Chapman’s case, he seems to be in a reverse scenario while finding a groove over the summer months, and that’s obviously a great thing for the Blue Jays as they pursue a playoff spot. I can’t recall which game it was from last week, but Sportnet’s Hazel Mae made a comment to Chapman during a post-game interview that sent me to do some research. He’s been especially hot over the last week, but he’s been swinging the bat well for a while now. That’s exactly what’s been happening lately, and the 29 year old has been a big reason why the Jays are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now. She mentioned that Chapman was a “second half hitter” historically, and he was quick to agree with her.

Springer has been battling a sore right elbow for well over a month, missing three straight games in late June, and the problem appeared to flare up when he swung at a first-pitch sinker and hit a fly ball to centre to end the eighth inning. He retired the final eight batters he faced and picked up his fourth win of the season. The last we saw Yusei Kikuchi, he was giving up four runs in Oakland while walking five and recording only seven outs.

The pregame narrative: Matt Chapman has an unimpressive opponent, Anthony Santander will benefit from a generous ballpark and Gleyber Torres has been smashing ...

He’s also helped by the fact that Yankee Stadium is 8% better than the average ballpark for home runs from the right side. Santander has slugged .509 against southpaws this season, and that power could come through in dramatic fashion. The setting of Friday’s game also helps Chapman’s case. Since John Schneider took over as Toronto’s manager, he’s hitting .425/.500/.875 with five home runs in 11 games. We also know that last season he threw sinkers the majority of the time (54.6%). Can You Bring Me My Chapstick? - Pitcher List (Pitcher List)

One of the hottest hitters in baseball kept on slugging last night, as Matt Chapman put up a 2-3, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB line in the Blue Jays' 5-3 win over ...

Thursday was a great day for Naquin as he blasted his seventh home run of the season in the sixth inning of the Reds’ loss to the Marlins and then was traded to the Mets later in the evening. He was still able to finish the at-bat and hit a double, but he didn’t come back out for the sixth inning. It was the longest homer of the night, and Judge’s 39th of the season. Amidst nonstop trade rumors, Mancini was able to quiet the noise and collect two hits yesterday, including an eighth-inning home run in what may very well have been his final at-bat as an Oriole at Camden Yards. The veteran slugger is hitting .271/.346/.411 this year, and although yesterday’s home run was just his 10th of the season, a lot of that may be due to Baltimore’s new outfield dimensions. The Bryce Harper-less Phillies will certainly need him to keep up his breakneck pace to stay afloat in the NL Wild Card race. In the first inning of an AL West matchup in Houston, Logan Gilbert left a slider right over the heart of the plate. Turner’s hitting .312/.356/.504, and has 15 home runs, 72 RBI, and 18 stolen bases. There’s really nothing Bogaerts can’t do – he’s now hitting .318/.393/.463, good for a .373 wOBA. The Red Sox shortstop has already accumulated 4.1 fWAR and is on pace to break his career record of 5.9 from his stellar 2019 season. Aguilar’s produced at a level that’s below league average according to his 98 wRC+ which is the lowest it’s been since 2019. Chapman’s current hot stretch has his batting line up to .245/.322/.466 with 18 home runs, 54 RBI, and a 119 wRC+ in his first season north of the border. Statcast’s Outs Above Average had always rated Chapman as one of the best fielders in baseball – from 2017-2021, his 48 OAA was the second-most among third basemen, trailing only Nolan Arenado. This year, however, Chapman’s OAA is a lowly -1. The Blue Jays are surely happy that Chapman’s offensive game is back on track after two down seasons, and I’m sure they’re expecting those defensive metrics to follow suit.
