Commonwealth Games open with celebration of host city Birmingham (The Guardian)

A raging bull, Malala Yousafzai, a Brummie drag queen and Duran Duran all part of festivities.

Excitement about the Games has been building for months. It was dragged into the stadium by 50 women representing chainmakers from the Industrial Revolution. “We tried to give everything an edge. The city and wider region will provide the perfect stage for our athletes to compete.” “It feels like these games have come around at the right time for this city,” said the show’s artistic director, Iqbal Khan. “We are ready to make a statement to the world about ourselves. The opening ceremony followed the journey of Stella and the Dreamers, a group of young athletes from around the Commonwealth, through Birmingham’s history.

This despite terms like colonialism, post-colonialism and de-colonization heavily back in vogue in certain political circles. Joining Buisa in Birmingham will be the athletes from Barbados, despite their country making headlines this year by ditching the Queen as its head of state.

Athletic feats at Commonwealth Games cannot distract from Britain's ... (The Guardian)

The lasting damage that slavery and colonialism have inflicted on Commonwealth countries has never been fully addressed.

It is particularly notable in Birmingham, a city home to many African, Caribbean and Asian immigrant communities that originally arrived here from Commonwealth countries and over the decades have experienced ample reminders of the fragility of their Britishness in the eyes of the government. There are also other positive, distinguishing features, from the integration of athletes with disabilities to the gender balance in the medal events and even just the spirit of congeniality among athletes. When Gaston Browne, the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, calmly explained to Prince Edward why they are seeking reparational support to address the long-term effects of colonialism, Edward responded with a pitiful quip and laughter. As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge toured Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas in March, their presence inadvertently gave centre stage to protesters and other citizens endeavouring to expose the lasting damage that colonialism has inflicted on their countries. Even in a competition contested by a limited pool of countries with notable athlete absences, there will be great performances and heartwarming moments. Canada, Australia and New Zealand are of far more interest to Britain than any African or Caribbean country.

Jacob Birtwhistle, the men’s runner-up, goes on to help secure a gold medal in the mixed relay for Australia, where he’s joined by Gillian Backhouse, Ashleigh Gentle, and Matthew Hauser. The 2018 Games also marks the debut of paratriathlon. Earlier in the year, she had a second surgery to correct a blocked artery in her leg, and also injured her foot and damaged her bike in the days leading up to the race. The Brownlee brothers, led by a dominating winning performance by Alistair, go one-two in the dramatic men’s race, which is marked by a crash on the bike course from early leader Henri Schoeman of South Africa, who does not finish. Some of the world’s top triathletes and paratriathletes, including 2020 Olympic gold medalist—and 2018 Commonwealth Games champ—Flora Duffy, as well as Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde, who finished second and third, respectively, in Tokyo. Here’s some history of triathlon in the Commie Games. Canada’s Simon Whitfield, the 2000 Olympic gold medalist, wins the men’s race in a sprint finish over Australia’s Miles Stewart and New Zealand’s Hamish Carter—a remarkable performance given that the then-27-year-old fractured both wrists and broke his collarbone in a car crash 16 weeks earlier.

A look into the rules and point system of Lawn Bowls, a sport that has featured in every Commonwealth Games since 1930.

In case team A had managed to place three bowls closer to the target than team B’s closest bowl, it would have been awarded three points. The team which manages to place its bowls closer to the target wins the points for the end. The number of points awarded is determined by the number of bowls a team has managed to place closer than its opponent. On the other hand, in the multi-player formats, a team gets two throws per player. A team gets four attempts in the singles format. As the name suggests, Lawn Bowls is played on a green stretch of land.

How will the medal table look by the end of the day? Whatever happens, let’s hope that, in the words of Nadine Dorries, the Games “puts Birmingham on the map”. It was famously impossible to locate the United Kingdom’s second-largest city before today. She will be up against Bermuda’s Flora Duffy, who pipped her to a gold medal in Tokyo. His main rival is New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde, with both expected to end up on the podium. The lawn bowls and para lawn bowls are well under way. Results from the elite men's triathlon at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Alex Yee claimed a brilliant victory.

Wilde pulled clear and onto the blue carpet to take his penalty, waving Yee past to go on and claim the gold. The gap at the end of Lap 1 of 4 on the bike was 16 seconds – very little change from the swim. Then, there he was, right on the shoulder of the Kiwi. Behind them Mattie Hauser of Australia was currently in possession of the bronze medal position. Wilde’s penalty was for unclipping his bike helmet too early in T2. The gap though had come down again slightly – Yee now trailed by 16 seconds as he exited onto the run. Silver seemed almost guaranteed, but was gold out of the question? Reid, though, started to fall away quickly as Yee set about cutting into the gap. Right now he wasn’t quite close enough to strike. Yee and fellow English star Dan Dixon were deep in the chase pack led by Sam Dickinson. Could he somehow run down the leaders? The next swing would be an important one.

The organisers promise a sweep of changes to rejuvenate the games. The host of the 2026 games, the Australian state of Victoria, was announced in April after a desperate search. And a third is the Commonwealth itself, which is struggling for relevance. A second problem is that the games are expensive and difficult to stage, especially for the Commonwealth’s poorer members. Yet it took until 1930 for the first iteration of the Commonwealth Games (then known as the British Empire Games) to take place, in the Canadian city of Hamilton. It was “designed on the Olympic model” but “merrier and less stern”, according to the organisers. This ethos has endured, with the event adopting the motto “the friendly games” in 1974, four years after mention of the empire was dropped from the name.

Superb in the swimming pool and tremendous on the track, Australia is in a dominant position on the medal table after a superb opening day in Birmingham.

The quartet initially set a Games record of 4:14.605 when qualifying fastest and lowered the time to 4:12.234 when far too good for New Zealand in the final. Australia’s world-beating cricketers were stretched to the brink by India in the first ever women’s match held at a Commonwealth Games but ultimately prevailed by three wickets. At the Lee Valley VeloPark, Jess Gallagher and her pilot Caitlin Ward combined to win the nation’s first gold medal in Birmingham in the women’s tandem B Para-track event. This is part of a much longer saga, one that involves considerable bullying and denigration of the work I’ve done over the years. There could be a huge swathe of media releases and updates issued to showcase the efforts of our athletes… The great shame, however, is that cycling – and cycling fans – will only get the official party line. The re-branded organisation is essentially still in its infancy, but many of the nasty old habits of what had been a rank management by Cycling Australia remain. This is traditionally when I go into overdrive in front of the computer, posting stories and interviews, highlighting how and why this is such an important event in Australian cycling history. Medals have been won and fast times set in racing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, but you won’t see any coverage of the event on RIDE Media this year.
