Pope Francis has issued a public apology for the role that the Catholic Church played in Canada's residential school system during his visit to the former site of the Ermineskin Indian Residential School in Maskwacis, Alta. "I was the happiest person ever. "It hasn't fully sunk in yet." Pope Francis has issued a public apology for the role that the Catholic Church played in Canada's residential school system during his visit to the former site of the Ermineskin Indian Residential School in Maskwacis, Alta. He (told me not to) tell anybody. Now we're just going to go forward, and I'm excited to be a Flame." It's always loud and people know their stuff." (So it’s) a little emotional." Pope Francis has apologized for the Catholic Church's role in residential schools during a visit to Maskwacis, Alta. Read the full text of his speech, translated from Spanish. Indigenous leaders, activists and others are reacting to an apology by Pope Francis on Monday for the Catholic Church's role in Canada's residential school system, a moment recognized by some as an historic event, while others continue to urge the pontiff to follow up his words with action. Hours after apologizing for the role members of the Catholic Church played in Canada's residential school system, Pope Francis received a welcome greeting at the Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples in Edmonton, where he offered his own reflections on the meaning of reconciliation.
It wasn't expected to work out like this. When news broke late Friday night the Calgary Flames traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for a package ...
But with Weegar in the picture — along with Tanev, Hanifin and Andersson — I wonder where he fits now. The Pacific Division is likely going to be weak again, at least relative to other divisions. That does not include extensions for Mangiapane and Kylington and other work to be done, but it’s more than double the $15.8 million Florida is projected to have in 2023. Over the last three years, he’s consistently scored at a top-line rate at five-on-five and can likely thrive in a bigger, top-six role. If he can retain some of that next season, he could help inject some offensive production back into the Flames lineup. Weegar is one of the best defencemen in the league in transition, both when it comes to exiting the zone and breaking up rush offence coming the other way. The Flames could do worse than securing a haul of picks or prospects and committing to a rebuild. And they should have money to spend to do it. Valimaki and Mackey will be RFAs next summer and only the latter has arbitration rights. The idea of that duo on the top line is intriguing, with Lindholm’s goal-scoring ability and Huberdeau’s passing. “A week ago, this was not the plan we had,” GM Brad Treliving said on Saturday. “But we were put in a position where we had to do the best thing for the organization. If the Flames cannot persuade Huberdeau and/or Weegar to stay this season, flipping them at the deadline would be a fine contingency plan.
Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar are interested in signing long-term deals with the Flames after they were acquired from the Panthers last week.

Huberdeau and Weegar were acquired Friday from the Florida Panthers as part of Calgary's return for Matthew Tkachuk. Huberdeau, who had a career-high 115 points ...
“I’m open to signing a long-term deal,” Weegar added. I’m open to staying with the Flames, but at the end of the day it’s not my decision. “It’s something I’m open about … They’re the one that traded for me.
Newly acquired Calgary Flames players Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar met with the media on Monday morning to discuss the trade that ended their ...
“I’m a playmaker, and I try to set up the guys, try to make people better around me. So I’m happy to be joining a team that’s right in the mix to win a Stanley Cup, and that’s what I’m most excited about. “They want to win now, and that’s really important to me. “It means the world to me,” Weegar said. “Who doesn’t have a good time at the Stampede?” Huberdeau added. “The city and the team, there’s no reason not to be open about it. In Calgary, those digits are taken by the Flames’ longest-tenured player, Mikael Backlund, who is a strong candidate to replace Mark Giordano as team captain going forward. And after that, I kind of leave that to Allan [Walsh], my agent, and the GM.” “Backlund is a veteran. “Yep, same here, open to signing a long-term deal,” Weegar added. “The fans are gonna be crazy. Tkachuk, 24, had elected to move on from Calgary as a restricted free agent.
Calgary Flames fans can exhale. After going through the emotional rollercoaster of losing star forwards Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk (no team has ...
It’s cool to see that we can bring that to the Flames and the fans.” Watching you guys in the playoffs and seeing the Sea of Red and stuff like that, now to be part of it is a really cool feeling.” “It’s a different beast,” Weegar said of the postseason. “I never thought I would play in Canada,” Huberdeau added. Me and Mackenzie learned a lot about how you play in the playoffs. “It’s completely different than the regular season. Huberdeau and Weegar were both on a squad in Florida that, like Calgary, did not quite get over the playoff hump. Treliving also managed to add a first-round draft pick and prospect Cole Schwindt in the trade. "I'm open to staying in Calgary for a long time,” Huberdeau said. I’m open to anything,” he said. He wants to win now, and the team wants to win now. “We didn’t really expect it,” Huberdeau said of the trade.
It seems like one of the biggest trades in the salary cap era is getting sweeter and sweeter for the Calgary Flames. On Monday, newly acquired duo Jonathan ...

With the initial shock having finally subsided after learning that they had been traded from the Florida Panthers to Calgary, Jonathan Huberdeau and ...
“Watching you guys in the playoffs and seeing the C of Red,” Weegar said. You want to play for a team that wants you and that’s all I want.” “It’s obviously been an emotional week (in Calgary) with the ups and downs and losing two great players,” Weegar said. “And now to be part of it, it’s a really cool feeling. “It’s a new chapter,” Huberdeau said. So, a little emotional, but throughout the weekend, you get more excited.”
The two players came over to Calgary in the Matthew Tkachuk trade with one year left on their current contracts.
His career-high in points was 18 when he signed his current deal and he followed that with 36 points in the shortened 2020-21 season and 44 last year. There aren't going to be many more players demanding long-term deals after this summer, other than Huberdeau and Weegar. Sean Monahan will be a free agent in 2023, but with his diminishing play/health concerns, he either will walk or re-sign on a much cheaper deal. Looking at Calgary's projected cap space, Treliving will have about $36 million to work with for next summer when Huberdeau and Weegar's current deals expire. He excels in the offensive zone, but he probably tops out as a 45- to 50-point defenseman. I could see the Ryan Pulock contract with the Islanders as a good comp. The contract carries an AAV of $3.25 million. Sure, Tkachuk is younger, but Calgary would be locking in one of the league's premier passers and a great transition defenseman for a player who was not going to sign long term. Given his production in recent years, the 29-year-old is certainly due a pay raise. The 28-year-old has flourished in recent seasons into an excellent transition defenseman who can play on the left and right sides. Both Huberdeau and Weegar are heading into the final year of their current contracts. Gaudreau is a great comparison when looking at what Huberdeau's next contract could be. At their introductory news conferences, both Huberdeau and Weegar expressed interest in staying in Calgary after next season, so extensions could be coming soon.
