Julio Jones signing deal with Tampa Bay Buccaneers, source says (ESPN)

Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones is signing a one-year deal with the Buccaneers, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

He appeared in just nine games for the Falcons in 2020. However, he appeared in just 10 games because of injuries and had career lows with 31 receptions for 434 yards and just one touchdown reception. Jones joins a receiver group with the Bucs that includes holdovers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Tyler Johnson, Scotty Miller and Breshad Perriman, and welcomed Russell Gage -- like Jones, another former Falcon -- this offseason.

Evans remains one of the toughest covers in the NFL, using his size, speed, and hands to consistently beat even the best corners. Jones is a big-body receiver who can win 50/50 balls and run crisp routes, two crucial elements for a Brady receiver. Tampa has proven year in and year out during Brady's tenure there that it can thrive with four-plus above-average receiving threats running routes simultaneously. The G.O.A.T. comes off an age-44 season in which he led the NFL with 485 completions, 719 attempts, 5,316 yards, and 43 touchdowns. He should be viewed as a fringe Tier-4/Tier-5 receiver, a dependable WR3 or flex who obviously skyrockets in value if he's healthy, and/or Godwin or Evans misses any time. Those three pass-catchers garnered a total of 278 targets last season from Brady, accounting for 38.6 percent of his NFL-leading 719 passes (second-most all time) WRs He's also the first player in NFL history to post multiple 150-yard, two-TD games in the postseason. Jones had a legendary career with Atlanta Falcons, posting 848 receptions for 12,896 yards, and 60 touchdowns in ten seasons. Last June, the Falcons traded Jones to Tennessee in exchange for a 2022 2nd round draft pick. It turned out to be a horrible deal for the Titans as Jones only appeared in 10 games and had very little impact on the offense with just 434 yards and one touchdown on 31 catches.

The addition of Jones also means that the Buccaneers won’t have to heavily rely upon one of their younger receivers during the postseason. One could argue the absence of Godwin and Brown directly led to Tampa Bay’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round. If the Buccaneers fall short of the ultimate goal this season, it won’t be due to injuries. For perspective, Miller had just five receptions during the entire 2021 season. Yes, it’s true it never hurts to stock up on offensive weapons — especially when you’ve lost Rob Gronkowski and Brown in the past seven months alone. Due to Godwin’s ACL tear in Week 15, he missed Tampa Bay’s postseason run.

Veteran WR Julio Jones signs 1-year contract with Bucs, per report (DraftKings Nation)

Update: Jones will make $6 million for this season with the Buccaneers, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. And with incentives, could make up to $8 million.

If he can stay on the field and resemble anything close to the seven-time Pro-Bowler, you’re getting great value. This shouldn’t move the needle much for the Bucs. Jones is 33 years old and past his prime. This is a significant investment, which likely means the team wants him starting when healthy.
