Toronto is coming off consecutive road losses to Montreal (1-0) and Chicago (2-0) in league play. “There seems to be a buzz even around the training facility, with the guys,” Bono said with a smile. “Listen, Toronto has always been a tough team to play against. Lattanzio is slated to finish out the season as interim head coach. Everyone’s family wants to get a piece of the action (Saturday).” How serious they are and how motivated they are about being here And of course, when training starts you can see the quality” (With only) a couple days of training, we’ll have to figure out exactly what it means in terms of minutes, things like that, but both of them are ready to go.” Toronto added experience on Friday in the form of Canadian international defender Doneil Henry, waived earlier this month by Los Angeles FC. The Italians bring experience, skill and style. In five seasons with Toronto, Henry made a combined 93 appearances. They have come in and just established right away how excited they are to be here, what good people they are, first and foremost. “And everybody’s also excited to get them going.

Toronto, Italia: Launch of the Lorenzo Insigne era gives TFC and ... (Toronto Star)

On Saturday night, Italian star Lorenzo Insigne and compatriot Federico Bernardeschi will usher in a new chapter in the life of Toronto soccer at BMO Field.

For now at least, in the form of Insigne and Bernardeschi — and Criscito, too — there is light and new life. He’s from Carrara, a coastal Tuscan city renowned for its marble and also the home of iconic Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. But if Buffon carries with him all of the immovable qualities of the rocks dug out of his native town, Bernardeschi emerged more in the honour of the sculptors who came to turn the marble into something beautiful. A right footer who loves to cut in from the left, he has rewritten not record books but dictionaries. Before even kicking a ball, Insigne has been selected for the MLS all-star skills challenge next month. Sebastian was a pioneer, very important for the evolution of the MLS brand in the eyes of the Italians. Insigne, Criscito and Bernardeschi, they surprised but not that much. Sitting eight points off a playoff spot in the East, TFC have 13 games remaining with eight against teams in the bottom half of the overall table. When Roberto Mancini’s squad celebrated continental triumph at a homecoming last summer, President Sergio Mattarella stopped to greet Insigne. Striker Nicolo Barella jumped in to introduce his teammate to the country’s leader as “O Tiraggiro.” Lots of noise in Little Italy. But what of the homeland? Italian immigrants long shouldered much of the load of building and maintaining a soccer culture here. “In Italy by now, MLS is seen as an evolving league,” Italian soccer analyst Romeo Agresti tells the Star from Turin. “Before it seemed that a footballer was going from Italy to America or Canada just to end his career, his last steps. The team has the second-worst record in Major League Soccer, with just five wins from 21 games, and has struggled to create goals, score goals or stop them from going in at the other end. Safe to call Saturday and the visit by Charlotte FC a significant moment in time.

There are also league considerations, of course, with Toronto currently 13th in the Eastern Conference standings. I think it shows that some of the things that have been worked on are going in a good direction." After picking up just one point in their last three games at BMO Field, the team’s form at home will have to improve if there is to be any hope of a playoff push. Though it was just a friendly it came against Premier League opposition, thus likely giving the team a boost of confidence heading into the weekend. Interim head coach Christian Lattanzio has been able to keep his team afloat, holding a record of 3-3-1 since his first match in charge, a surprising 2-0 win against New York Red Bulls. After dealing with calf discomfort upon his arrival in Toronto, Lorenzo Insigne is set to make his long-awaited debut in front of what should be close to a sellout crowd. Kamil Jozwiak eventually netted the winning spot kick to give his team the big win. In what was expected to be a tough season for the new team on the block, Charlotte have done well to keep themselves in the middle of what is a tight playoff race.

Charlotte sits eighth in the MLS Eastern Conference with 26 points and is just one point behind Cincinnati for the final playoff spot. At the other end of the pitch, Charlotte comes to BMO Field in decent form, with two MLS wins and three defeats over their last five matches. The Reds still have a lot of work to do in order to climb the table and secure an MLS Cup playoff position. Doneil started his career with the Reds in the Academy and was the first homegrown player to sign with the first team in the MLS in 2010. The Reds have one point in their previous five games and are on a two-match losing streak. Goalkeeper Alex Bono made five key saves that kept Toronto in the game, and Montreal could've won the match by three or four more goals if it wasn't for the excellent performance.

The addition of Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi into the Toronto FC lineup on Saturday night was more than just a shot in the arm for the Reds.

Soon after, TFC goalkeeper Alex Bono made his first good save of the match on a header from close in by Charlotte’s Kamil Jozwiak. But the play was ruled offside. Prior to Saturday’s game, TFC played 29 straight MLS games while giving up at least one goal, equaling the third-longest regular season run in league history (Tampa Bay 2000-01). It’s been a long time since my last game but the more time passes, the more I’ll feel fit,” said Insigne, who last played May 22. Heading into the match, the Reds were eight points out of a playoff spot with six teams to climb over and only 13 games remaining. Insigne, the club’s $45-million man, received a rousing ovation when he was introduced before the match.
