Nobody was injured and passengers are safely ashore after a fire broke out on the P.E.I.-Nova Scotia ferry Friday, close to the Wood Islands Ferry Terminal.

When she got there, emergency personnel began arriving at the scene and getting lifeboats into the water. He has since left to try his luck at the Confederation Bridge. It asked members of the public to avoid the area. Seven local firefighters remain on board to fight the fire. “Ship’s crew and safety systems contained the fire. “The guy at the terminal said that things didn’t look good and we should be prepared to turn around and leave,” he said. MacLaughlin said the ferry appeared to be coming in to dock at the time. “When we pulled up to the terminal to check in for our reservation, you could see a lot of heavy black and brown smoke, which was clearly coming from the ferry,” he said. “We apologize for the inconvenience to our customers and our focus at this time is the safety of our passengers, ensuring our passengers are safely evacuated ashore and the safety of our crew,” he said. In a series of tweets, the Halifax Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said it responded to a distress call at 11:17 a.m. indicating the Holiday Island “suffered a fire in their engine room and subsequently ran aground.” In the release issued just after 1 p.m., Cormier said the company is suspending the rest of the ferry crossings for the day “out of an abundance of caution and to focus on safely getting the passengers ashore.” In a tweet just before noon, the P.E.I. RCMP said officers are assisting with an “incident offshore near the Wood Island Ferry Terminal” and said the terminal is currently closed.

WOOD ISLANDS, P.E.I. - A ferry that runs between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island is being evacuated after a fire broke out on board.

However, the MV Confederation will resume service along the route beginning Saturday on a revised schedule, she said. All passengers had been taken ashore as of 1:15 p.m. local time, according to a tweet from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax. There were no reported injuries. He thanked everyone who helped with the evacuation efforts, including ferry staff, first responders, police and the local fishers. The captain dropped both anchors and steered the ship onto a soft shoal, company vice-president Dan Cormier said in a news release. That was updated to about 230 passengers on Friday afternoon. “I mean, I’ve got medication on there that I need by tomorrow.” John Kenny was aboard the MV Holiday Island with his eight-year-old son, heading to P.E.I. to visit his parents. “Then you’re like, ‘That doesn’t look like it’s just for precaution,’” he said. Officers from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada will arrive at the site on Saturday to begin an investigation, the agency said in an email. “Definitely a lot of people are not going to have a very good weekend,” he said, noting there were a lot of young families on board. Most of the passengers stayed calm when the loud, ringing alarms went off, he said in an interview Friday. It was a little more unsettling, he said, to see the dark, grey smoke billowing out of the ship’s stack. It was when a massive inflatable slide sprang from the ship’s side to offer an evacuation route that the gravity of the situation set in, Kenny said.

I’m relieved to hear that all of the MV Holiday Island passengers have made it to land safely. “(I thought) they were going to make us swim to shore. Eighteen crew members and seven local firefighters remained on board to deal with the fire. In a release from Northumberland Ferries, Don Cormier, vice-president, said the ship's crew and safety systems were able to contain the fire. In the release from NFL, no injuries were reported. “At that point they didn’t know if we would have to go down the slides. And I’m like, ‘I’m not going in there. “There is no timeline for getting our cars back,” she said. “I informed them that the boat was made of metal, and it was not going to burn down.” "They said someone has to assess if the boat is even safe before they move it closer to shore to take the vehicles off, then go from there. “Once everyone was in, the raft fishing boats that were nearby showed up, and we transferred to them and went to shore.” No stranger to the ferry, Mason, who is from Nova Scotia, was making one of her many summertime trips across the water to see her friends on the Island and to play in an annual ball tournament.
