Dungeons and Dragons movie

The new Paramount Dungeons & Dragons movie, Honor Among Thieves, is surprisingly faithful to the D&D experience.

I mean, it could still be terrible—I’m jaded enough to not get my hopes up too high—but this trailer is definitely a pleasant surprise. I did make it to both the Severance and Dragon Prince panels Thursday and am sallying forth to many more today. Ben Stiller, at the Severance panel, was revealed to also be a Comic-Con virgin. So, in very broad strokes, this looks like the kind of campaign where the Dungeon Master (or DM) has tried pretty hard to craft a serious story only for the players to basically turn it into a running gag. The Chris Pine-led adventure film appears to actually understand and appreciate what an actual session of Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming is like. . . . D&D nerds?

John Francis Daley, co-director the new D&D movie, has the most heartwarming connection to the franchise.

“It is really the feeling you get when you play the game and that really is what we tried to do here with this film. “I’ve been an avid player since I was 14 years old and I was an actor on the show Freaks and Geeks,” Daley said in Hall H at Comic-Con, to much applause. Anyone skeptical that there’s a new Dungeons and Dragons movie coming out is completely warranted.

The official description for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves reads: "A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is bringing back the cast of the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. One of the rival groups was the adventuring party from the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon.

SDCC has trailers coming out its ears! Watch teasers for the Dungeons & Dragons movie, the Teen Wolf film, and the new National Treasure show.

Nicolas Cage, who anchored the National Treasure movies, is not in the series, and per The A.V. Club didn’t get mentioned on the SDCC panel until a fan asked about him. Naturally, there are quite a few trailers coming out at SDCC. Another one is for the movie sequel to Teen Wolf, which wrapped up after six seasons in 2017. Also, I’m getting Thor: Love and Thunder vibes from the classic rock score.

Similar to how the Marvel movies take liberal interpretations with the comics, Dungeons & Dragons fans should be okay with the movie not following the Player's Handbook to the letter. If a game's Dungeon Master says that it's okay for a druid to transform into an owlbear....then it's okay for the druid to transform into an owlbear. Well, some Dungeons & Dragons fans are forgetting about the most important rule in Dungeons & Dragons: having fun.
