Blue Jays set team mark for runs -- by the 5th inning (MLB.com)

BOSTON -- The biggest offensive outburst in Blue Jays history took place Friday night in Boston, setting a franchise record with 27 runs.

The final run scored on Matt Chapman's single in the ninth. “Grease” was about to overtake “Jaws 2” at the box office. The organization was just 2 years old.

Blue Jays Set Records In Boston Blowout (Sports Illustrated)

The Blue Jays bested the franchise records for runs and hits in a game in Friday's win over the Red Sox.

Slapping another single into right field in the final frame, Gurriel became just the second Blue Jay ever to record six hits in a game, tying Frank Catalanotto. He turned on the low pitch, driving it into the cavernous Fenway outfield and scoring two more runs for Toronto. The two tallies pushed Toronto's score to 25, breaking the Blue Jays franchise record for scores in a game. Two innings after setting the runs record, Gurriel slapped a single into right field for Toronto's 26th hit of the game.

The 28 runs scored in tonight’s game is a Blue Jays franchise record for runs scored in a single game, surpassing a 24-run performance against Baltimore in 1978. Ironically, Eddings pissed off Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi in the 3rd inning with his calls in a Teoscar Hernandez at-bat. Perhaps his biggest feat was winning with umpire Doug Eddings behind home plate, the same umpire who had a 64% Called Strike Accuracy on June 21st during a Blue Jays-White Sox game. Tapia went from “Damn, I’m out” to 355 mph in no time, and he cleared the bases for his fifth home run of the season. On what should have been a routine fly ball, Red Sox CF Jaren Duran never saw the ball, and instead, stood completely still as the ball landed in front of the center field wall. On a 0-0 offering from Red Sox reliever Austin Davis, Tapia skied a ball into deep center field, and judging on his body language, Tapia assumed that he would be out.

The 31-year-old has a 2.68 ERA and 3.14 FIP 18 starts into the season, but with the Rangers only seven games back of an expanded postseason spot, they may not be inclined to move their surprise ace. Miley, too, has injury question marks but comes with a decent track record of bottom-rotation reliability. But, the 29-year-old has still been effective, posting a 4.0 ERA and 4.28 xERA in 14 starts this season, allowing over three runs in just three of his outings. The righty has broken 160 IP just twice in his career and expecting late-season success coming off TJ could be asking a lot. And, though the Angels sit at 39-53 and 21.5 games back of the AL West lead, are they willing to toss the towel and sell on another season of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani's prime? From 2019 through 2021, Quintana had a 5.13 ERA, pitched just 244 innings, and lost his hold on a regular rotation spot.

But all of that only serves to build the tension, raise the stakes, and make the push towards the post-season that much more impassioned and memorable. While they tend to be most aggressive in the off-season, there’s the potential for moves in the coming weeks that cleverly complement a roster that remains very talented. And they have had the tendency over the past couple of seasons to finish stronger than they started. Outside of Alek Manoah, Alejandro Kirk and Jordan Romano, there’s a good argument that there’s plenty of upside to be found from the players currently on the roster. This is a complaint that has drifted into my own social-media mentions almost annually, and whenever there is the slightest air of positivity around the team coming out of spring training. The Blue Jays have not lived up to expectations in 2022.

The Blue Jays were just a pair of runs short of the major-league record, including 11 in the fifth inning alone, on the road against their division rivals.

It was probably the most gob-smacking episode of a game that had plenty of them. It was The Massacre on Jersey Street, formerly 4 Yawkey Way. What could the Jays do with Ross Stripling? (Blue Jays Nation)

Sometimes, contenders will trade their main roster players. It sounds weird, but this literally happened in 2020, when the Dodgers traded the Jays Ross ...

If the two sides can’t come to an agreement and the qualifying offer sticks, the Jays should extend that offer. If the Jays make the playoffs, this doesn’t hurt that much. They can re-sign him, which is the ideal option. Now, they can agree to an extension, but there is still a possibility that the qualifying offer remains. What about the hole that Stripling would leave? Depending on how they play heading into the trade deadline, I think there is a remote possibility, but it’s unlikely. The ramifications of Stripling signing a 1 year, $18.5 million contract are incredibly minuscule. I’m split on what the Jays should do with the 32-year-old. The last proposal came from Major League Baseball, as they offered a bonus pool of $181 million with a hard cap. Then you look at the series against the White Sox back in late June. They scored 22 runs in three games, yet lost the first two by a score of 7-6 and 8-7, before winning game three 9-5. Let’s be real, the Jays making the playoffs is not even close to being guaranteed. So why does it seem that the team hasn’t lived up to expectations?

The Blue Jays' starters have been healthy, and the presence of Biggio and Santiago Espinal allows them to cycle off-days without reaching too deep on the bench, but there’s room to add to that group. The Blue Jays need more. The Blue Jays are in the sweet spot that all rebuilding teams hope to reach. That’s when the Blue Jays added Taijuan Walker, Robbie Ray and Ross Stripling, all at reasonable prices to effectively shore up the rotation. Zack Collins remains on the roster as a third catcher, too, but he has played sparingly. First was Alejandro Kirk, who shook off a slow April to become the star of the season. Blue Jays break franchise single-game run record in Red Sox blowout (Jays Journal)

The Toronto Blue Jays broke two franchise records after demolishing Al East rivals in the Red Sox by a score of 28-5 last night in Boston.

Gurriel ties Frank Catalanotto for the most hits in a game by a Blue Jays player. With RISP being a hot topic for most of the year, the Blue Jays found their bats early and often last night, breaking the franchise single-game record by bringing in 28 runs against the Red Sox pitching staff.

The Blue Jays need starting pitching depth at this year's trade deadline to round out what's been a very inconsistent rotation.

The Blue Jays currently have two starters they can rely on to give quality outings in Manoah and Gausman. Berrios will be a staple as well, and he has looked good lately so hopefully, that continues into the second half. Jose Berrios is the most maddingly inconsistent starter in baseball right now, looking unhittable in one start and unable to get an out the next. The Toronto Blue Jays completed a disappointing first half which saw manager Charlie Montoyo fired and the team barely hanging onto the third Wild Card spot.
